That intro was a masterpiece. You standing at the window pondering mortality was perfect. I think Dehancer is the closest thing we have to accurate film colour, but I’ve found the glass is just as important in achieving the overall look. My canon FD lenses immediately bring a scene up several levels alone. Combine these together and you’ve got a hell of a look.

Excellent video Scott, I truly enjoyed the intro! I'm also completely obsessed with authentic film emulations, and have been for years! As for halations, if you watch older movies from the 80's, 90's and 2000.. most of them are shot on 35mm film and some show really strong opaque red halations (at the point where it's really distracting and can't miss it), while some others show subtle orange translucide edges only. There are some technicals reasons for that, but since we're not shooting on actual film but just emulating the look.. the strenght of the halation becomes an artistic choice base on preference. I agree that a lot of people simply go too strong for no reason though. I love Dehancer and it has completely changed the game, but personnally, I use it in conjunction with Emotive Color (Arri LogC) and Juan Melara's FilmUnlimited powergrades. The only Dehancer modules that i'm currently using is the Bloom and Film Grain. I always struggled with Dehancer's colors.. I tried a lot of time with different footage from different cameras, and I can get some nice looks, but I still prefer the color separation I get from FilmUnlimited, where skintones are always 100% spot on. The only thing I really don't understand with Dehancer is the film grain size slider. Dehancer say that it goes from 65mm down to 8mm (and even 4mm), although the only way that i can get the true 35mm look (e.g. True Blood, Harry Potter, Scream, Terminator 2, etc) is by setting the size slider all the way up to 12, setting it to Positive, and use the Amount slider to set the intensity. Everybody says 35mm has really fine grain, but I don't get it since it appears quite big to me. I have tons of stills and video references from Blurays (movies shot on 35mm film), and none of them have really fine grain like that. They all shows quite agressive grain texture. I also own some authentic 4K film grain scans from CineGrain (which i'm not using anymore because Dehancer integrates it the ''right'' way), and when I look at the 35mm scans, grain is a lot bigger than what Dehancer recommend for 35mm emulation (matching what I see in movies shot on 35mm film). When I look at 8mm film scans (and also actual 8mm film), it's like 10x bigger than Dehancer with the size slider all the way up to 12. I'm not saying they're lying, not at all.. there's probably something I don't understand... but clearly, now that i'm using it that way, it's shockingly realistic to the point where it looks like it's part from the same movie (when comparing back to back with actual 35mm movies). Texture is now identical. Another thing to consider is if you want the clipped look with very agressive grain around the highlights with sudden clipping where grain disappear completely (like in True Blood, or Scream for instance), or if you want the ''Harry Potter'' film look, where the grain distribution from shadows to highlights is set like Dehancer's default settings (smoothly disappears in the highlights). I personnally like both looks. I know the look with agressive grain in the highlights and hard clipping isn't part of the negative, and have something to do with the transfer process they was using at the time... but I managed to recreate it perfectly as well! Anyways, if you're interested in chatting and sharing stuff about film emulations, I'd really like that! It's hard to find people with that much passion for things like that!

You really nailed everything about film and it's characteristics while simultaneously teaching all the controls in depth. Especially enjoyed the fact on how you talk about film's perceived resolution. While it's true old films like Star Wars can be scanned up to 6k, it isn't necessarily going to look sharper than a modern digital movie mastered at 4K or even 2K due to the things you describe in the video. The way you presented all these facts and pointers concisely + showing a film applying it was probably one of the best sponsors for a program I've ever watched.
@ScottJeschke Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Andrew! I really appreciate this thoughtful feedback on the demo itself. Film emulation is an interesting process, because you really have to understand the why in order for it to look authentic. Which, admittedly, I don't always get right. It's interesting because a one to one emulated recreation of an actual film shot is much more likely to look realistic than making something from scratch. So many variables.

FYI: positive(aka reversal) vs negative filmstock are 2 different types of film. reversal is a filmstock that never goes through a negative process it is developed and what you see is what you get. like slides in photography. those stocks tend to be grainier, less dynamic range and higher contrast. damn i am old but proud to have started in film and lived through the digital revolution.

One of the best reviews ever!! Super entertaining and excellent real world tutorial all wrapped into one! Betting your neighbors loved the scream at the end....LOL!!

Thank you so much! So glad to hear. Lol. Had to dub the scream in my closet. But no doubt my neighbors thought I was a total loony lying under each tree 😆. Also kudos for watching til the end! I think you're the first person to reference the scream. My favorite part haha

LOL!!! In all seriousness - just bought Dehancer and your video has been EXTREMELY helpful (especially as a FCPX user - trying to eventually make the Davinci switch - but I know FCPX soooo well.....). I've been a fan of Final Convert for a while - but already enjoying the results I get 0ut of Dehancer Pro even more so thanks again!!!@@ScottJeschke

Oh man, this was hilarious, informative, and just awesome, overall. Thanks for putting in the extra effort to make this review/tutorial so entertaining. I also appreciate your more measured use of the tool, not going overboard in the way I’ve seen in other KZbinr’s videos. Definitely planning on buying Dehancer and I’ll be sure to use your promo code. Subscribed!
