Love shooting TLR cameras. Back in the ancient days (1980's) I used a Yashicamat 124G to do photos during the wedding ceremony. Worked great for this because is was almost silent. I recently stumbled across a Mamiya C220 and have been having an absolute blast with it. Been looking forward to using it for some street photography. TLRs look so quaint and non-threatening... especially the waist level viewfinder. Plus, the square format is great!

Thanks. You summed it up quite well. I have been in love with my Rolleiflex 3.5 F since 1975. A 3.5, because even then, the 2.8 was a lot more expensive. And the difference is not even a stop. Furthermore, the wide/tele adapters (muttars) were optically designed for the 3.5. The difference in price allowed me to buy film and filters and still left me with enough money for a vacation with my new treasure. Weeks doing nightshifts in a metal factory gave me a great summer.

I am a older photographer, so I have been around a while. I started photography in 1969. My first TLR was a Yashica Matt 124. My dad bought me that camera new in 1971. In 1972 I traded a 35mm Mamiya/Sekor 500 TL for a used Rolleiflex F2.8. which was from 1960. In 1986 I bought a used Mamiyaflex with a 180mm lens. In the late 1990s someone gave me a Rollei Autocord that was non-working. Yes, I like these cameras. I have taken a lot of photos with them and they have an interesting history behind them.

I have a Ricoh Diacord with a four element taking lens, and it's my absolute favorite camera to use. I rebuilt almost every component on it, so the shutter and aperture are flawlessly precise and smooth. I also cleaned up the ground glass and replaced the mirror so it's very bright when looking in the viewfinder. As old as some TLRs are, getting one in flawless mechanical condition is almost impossible, so I have taken it upon myself to service my own cameras back into modern service, and it really pays off.

My Rolleiflex cost £70 about 30 years ago. It had a recent full service and is now as good as new. However they need to be frequently used to keep in top condition. The 6 x6 format is perfect for me as you can use the full square or crop to portrait or landscape if desired. I think my best photos have been using this camera because you really need to think about your composition. Whereas with digital I would take hundreds of scenes in a day and hope to pick one good picture, with The Rollei (or any manual film camera for that matter) you try to make each frame count.

Got a Lubitel2 (£17.50 DELIVERED in very good condition including leatherette case) and I’ve shot some slide in it this summer. It’s actually very light but solid bit of kit. I only got the Holga for double exposures and with 6x6 means you don’t have to overthink the double exposure cause it’s square every time. On the Holga with the 6x4.5 mask I’d end up avoiding shooting D Exp. Lubitel and Halina have to be the cheapest way to get into TLRs I reckon

I just purchased a Yashicamat EM. It is very like the Rollei but way cheaper, well almost. The one I'm getting is being CLA'ed by a factory tech and I should have it in my hands by early next year. A long time to wait I know but worth it to get a camera that has been pretty much totally torn down and put back together and with new red leather covering. @@ribsy I was surprised she sold it being a photographer herself. My dad has a 9x12 wooden camera from my great grandfather from around 1910 that some day, hopefully very far away, will be mine, together with all my dad's Exakta, Exas and lenses (which he has always shared with me). I can't imagine to sell any of those. But she said she doesn't like medium format and rather shoots the Canon A1 she also got from him. She thinks too he would have liked the idea that his cam will be used and not just parked somewhere on a shelf. Good for me! The cam was in great condition and also came with 3 filters which was nice.

Confession: I suffer from GAS. Especially during lock-down. Went nuts on ebay and, at last count, I have 26 cameras (part of my photographic OCD), mostly film. I have 3 TLRs. Your comments about their beauty and timelessness is right on. I just love the look and feel of the older cameras, something lost in digital (though I have two Fuji's that I love). Every time I pick up one of these with these vintage cameras to sell on ebay I stop. Just can't seem to part with them. Great video.

Needs some TLC , a CLAD as her lube is old , but the body and the lenses are superb. This rare bird can be used in work , not a shelf queen. Lovely informative video; many many years ago, I started out in photography using my dad’s Rolleicord Va (that’s a f3.5) and there were a lot of accessories like the Rolleikin (35mm film adapter) and wide/tele add-ons and various filters. The camera was a stripped down ‘flex but the basics were the same. Being fully manual, it taught me a lot about photography including using external handheld exposure meters. Later, I was able to set up a darkroom and that’s when the magic really began!

The 35mm TLR is the Contaflex, very rare, very expensive, I think it was the first camera with a light meter, only a handful were made in 1936. In a 6x7 format, Koni Omegaflex M is a TLR (not exactly a TLR as the standard finder has you looking directly through the upper lens-there is a reflex adapter--What is interesting about this camera is that there are 4 interchangeable lenses-59, 90, 135, and 180, For 4x5, the Gowlandflex, you have got to check this out. I have only seen photos of it, gigantic.

Hey Ribsy, Always good to here from you. My first tlr was a Ricoh Diacord graduating from an Argus C3. I never really appreciated it, but after messing with an Exakta and a Pentax, I moved up to a Mamiya C3 tlr. It took me a long time to appreciate the Mamya but I finally did when I put on a tripod and cable release. Great studio camera and even great in the street. Good for portraits. I think that I got the most out of it after I honed my shooting technique on a 4x5 monorail camera and a Hblad 500c. The Mamiya C3 was a lot quieter, and subjects felt more comfortable with it. I think maybe because I didn't hide behind it when shooting. They could see my face and didnt feel on the spot so much.

I own a few of my dream cameras in 35mm & 120. I could sell them all & the one I'd keep is my Mamiya C330f. I use it with a prism viewfinder mostly to speed up my shooting a little. It is big & heavy, but I'm big & strong & it does give me that authentic & pure film shooting experience. I always get looks & comments when I'm out shooting with it. The glass is fantastic too. I go between the 80mm 2.8 blue dot for everyday shooting & the 180mm for portraits. Spring is here, so time to get out again & start shooting it again. Those Rolleiflex 2.8E & F's are stupidly expensive. Especially if buying a great copy from Japan with the postage cost & import tax on top. It may be more iconic, but at 1/3rd the price, give me a Mamiya C330 any day. The Zeiss & Planar lenses are stunning, but the Sekor lenses are almost on the same level, maybe one hair less stellar. Not much in it at all really.

Aweasome video as always, man! Just got a TLR two weeks ago ( my first medium format camera ), a Yashica-A. I'm absolutely in love with that camera, apart from the film winding mechanism that is a bit weird at first ( it does not have a counter or a forced stop at each frame like "newer" TLRs ), it's perfect as an introduction to TLRs and medium format. Cheers!

TLRs are my favorite cameras. I collect them and I shoot the majority of my pictures with them. Having said this, a Mamiya C will never find a place in my collection. To me, these are abominations which only combine the disadvantages of TLRs with the disadvantages of medium format SLRs and contradict what TLRs are standing for: small, lightweight, silent, unobtrusive, uncomplicated.
