Get better audio in Zoom for online music lessons (2023)

Do you use Zoom for online music lessons or group meet-ups? If you take music lessons perhaps you are using a simple setup like an iPad or iPhone. If so, you might not realize that the default audio settings in 2023 can still result in choppy or inaudible sound. I'll show you how to change your settings so you can share better audio quality. We'll go into an actual Zoom meeting and compare the sound of my harp using different settings and devices.

Anne, thanks so much for taking the time to clearly walk us through this process. I don't teach many lessons online, but the most recent ones have been very difficult to teach because of these audio issues. One time I couldn't hear the student's piano and most times they can barely make out what I'm saying or demonstrating on my piano.

This is SO helpful Anne. I knew how to enable this on my laptop, so my students could hear my harp. But my students using an iPad couldn't see how to enable Original Sound for Musicians on the iPad, so I couldn't hear their harp well. I couldn’t just say, “Ok, let’s just stop there and look at that little section again.” I had to wait until they got further on before being able to go back to work on a mistake.

This is the best tutorial video I've ever seen for teaching students how to change the default settings on their mobile devices. Most of my students know how to do it, but some of them are not good at remembering. And when I meet a new student, I always have to take valuable lesson time to teach it again. I was very surprised. My lessons online were done with zoom but Stephanie had so much trouble and just assumed it was my router. We switched to FaceTime. But this sounds awesome.

Certainly your internet connection plays a big part in it. But what I was noticing was that students who used to share really nice audio quality were all of a sudden sounding really choppy. It seems that some of the 2023 updates caused a lot of new problems. Noise reduction is great for office meetings, but not so great for musical instruments.

A bit shocking isn't it? 2023 has been challenging for audio completely cutting out. I'm noticing such an improvement as my students are getting this sorted out for their harp lessons.

This is not for students but maybe for some teachers: Another step I took as a teacher was to hook in a Blue Yeti microphone to my laptop and then select on Zoom for that to be the active mic instead of my laptop mic. If I am also on Original Sound for Musicians, this improves the quality of the sound going to my student. But I do find that when I plug the Blue Yeti in to my computer, the Original Sound goes off and I have to re-set it by hand. AND I have to go into audio settings and make sure that "USB" (Blue Yeti) is the microphone that is going to be active. I did also try several other microphones and the Blue Yeti was the best sound reproduction. And the Blue Yeti doesn't improve things at all UNLESS I have chosen Original Sound for Musicians.

Hi Carolyn, the USB Blue Yeti is a great solution for anyone on a laptop or desktop. If I do a video for laptop and desktop users that is certainly a nice simple workflow that levels up the audio quality! Thanks for sharing!

Definitely a difference! The sound totally cut out in default mode! I never really knew what original sound was. One harpist I know uses a platform specifically designed for musicians rather than Zoom for her online lessons (not sure what it is). I am sure this problem is why. Thanks for the info! 👍

It's quite shocking to find out what the default mode sounds like! Yes, there other platforms like Forte, Rock Out Loud, Facetime and GoogleMeet. You have to weigh the pros and cons for each one. I'm hoping that if I can get all of my students using original sound I won't have to make a platform change.

Very interesting. I can't believe that a major tech company such as Zoom could make such a "defective" product. I am not involved with any live instruments on Zoom, but I am having a similar problem with playing musical video files from my PC during a Zoom meeting. Could this have the same cause and fix? I sure hope so.

Anne, this is a wonderful video! I'm forwarding this to my online students. What I struggle with on the "teacher" end is dealing with audio being out of synch with video as it leaves Zoom. There are other platforms that apparently do a better job with syncing (do mean playing along with your student?) If it's syncing your own audio and video that sounds like an internet speed issue to me.

Similar, Jill. You have to "enable original sound for musicians" in the audio settings. Then in every meeting turn it ON, you'll be able to see it in the upper left corner of the Zoom window. Best improvement you could make for a laptop is to get a USB microphone like a Blue Yeti Nano.

It's similar on a laptop, Amelia. You have to enable original sound for musicians in the settings. But again, it always defaults to OFF. So look in the upper left corner and click "Original Sound for Musicians: ON". On a laptop it also makes a big difference to use a simple little USB microphone like a Blue Yeti Nano.

You're right, laptops and desktops are a little different, so that's why I didn't include them in this video. It still comes down to turning ON original sound for musicians in every session.

After reading your comment here I looked again and the message on the top of the screen said it was off, then I realized I had to click on it to toggle to on and it worked! what about MacBook Air Laptops. i am in classes with a teacher you uses Sound, his voice, when he does scales or hits low or high notes, we lose him, souind is distorted. apparently this problem has been going on for years. i would like to resolve it. is there any way to be in touch with you directly. the Zoom screens are different than what is shown in other videos i am looking at. these classes are very valuable to me, yet they are being distorted, thus diminshing the Sound, diminishing the experience and the value. i would Love to Solve this.

Why is this considered to be for musicians? I am a French student who has Zoom lessons in exceptional circumstances, and these gaps in sound happen there too. I plan to share this with my teacher and see if the situation improves. Thank you very much for this video.

The default audio setting is probably the better option for speech. Zoom does a good job at noise reduction and makes the human voice sound clear and rich. Unfortunately the default noise reduction cuts out the sustain of music instruments. Could you hear how when I enabled original sound the audio was noisier, but the harp's sustain could be heard.

@@annecrosbygaudetmusic Yesterday I had an online harp lesson, an exceptional situation, and we didn’t have a lot of time to figure out what was going on. But I did remember your video, although I did not remember the details of the required changes, and this morning I looked for it. Hopefully we will get it right the next time, if there is one, that we need to do an online lesson. Thank you so much for this video. I have sent it to my teacher, who was aware of the different settings, but when you never need to use them you don’t always remember the details. As a follow up to my previous question about my French class, the default settings were fine, but in an online yoga class none of the students could hear the bell at the beginning of class, or the music for savasana at the end of class, so my yoga teacher really appreciated your video. I take voice lessons on Zoom. I use my laptop, which is attached to a large external monitor. I assume I can just use the same setting for my laptop as you described for iphone and ipad. Is that correct?

It's easier on the laptop because you can see if original sound is on or off in the upper left corner.

I decided to focus this video on iPhones and iPads, because I was having trouble talking my students through the settings during their lessons. You’re right, laptops and desktops are another kettle of fish!
