Little story for you Tom. Yesterday morning I was running a BoD meetings over Zoom. Being privileged, having all those gears that you know about, I’m obviously using them… At the end of the meeting, two of the participants asked what’s my setup etc. Earlier I saw on my KZbin feed that your video of this week was on the topic. I told both of them that I would share a link that would probably help a lot… Now this morning - Friday - first I watched the video and I discovered quite a few things in the settings that I didn’t know about… I basically never looked into so thank you very much 👍 but also I got a message from one of the two people I sent the link to, telling me how great and useful your video has been 👏👏👏 but see, I trust your content so much that I send it to those guys without even watching, knowing it would help for sure 😉

Great question! Most USB mics have built in headphone outputs, so you can connect your headphones there and listen to yourself along with anyone else on the call (you can select the mic as the speaker in Zoom settings). For XLR mics, you'll need to run it through an interface like a Rodecaster or Scarlett. Pretty much every interface haas a headphone output and then it's the same as with a USB mic described above 👍

Tom, these are amazing tutorials, thanks. I encountered one issue with the settings (I think) in this video. I made the audio setting adjustments that eliminated the Zoom audio filters, and my business customer on the other end said that he was hearing his own echo. Is this because the Zoom audio setting that I turned off is the same feature that filters out HIS voice that is being amplified on my side through my internal iMac speakers? I switched back to the regular audio automatic filtering settings mid-meeting and it fixed the echo on his end. I am using a Shure SM7B that is pointed away from my computer speakers. Please share your wisdom on what you think is actually happening.

Thanks for this, Tom! I’ve noticed an input lag when using my camera through the camlink 4K, causing syncing issues with the audio. How have you resolved this when using Zoom or Teams?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Audio/video sync issues are common and usually just have to do with the speeds of video vs. audio signals (think of two equally fast runners racing while one is carrying a feather and the other is carrying a bag of cement- the cement runner is probably going to be a bit slower). The solution is to add a small audio delay to allow the video signal to "catch up." For some reason Zoom still hasn't added this, but most streaming software like OBS or Ecamm will let you do it, along with some hardware devices like the Rodecaster 2. 👍

Hi Chris! Camera placement is a good one- maybe even worth of its own video. In general, I try and keep the camera close to eye level and as close to the screen as possible so that, even when I'm glancing away to look at Zoom, I'm not looking too far away from the camera. Teleprompters can also be a great tool. It can be tricky to setup a tablet or small monitor with a mirrored display, but it does allow you to then look directly into the camera AND the meeting at the same time.

Dear Tom; I'm a fan of you KZbin Chanel. I’m teaching online with Zoom using Ecamm and recording all my broadcasts with Ecamm using the Rodecaster Pro II as a sound device. But I have a problem. My students are telling me that my sound is too low, and my students have to put the volume all the way “Up” for my discourse to be intelligible to them. I’m Using a Sure SM7B (gain 70) and/or a Rode Video Mic NTG. They are all at “Unity Level” on the Rodecaster Pro. I have analyzed my recordings in Adobe Audition and my sounds are recorded at about -30 LUFS average. This in fact is much too low! So, I have to boost them to -16 LUFS (the standard) in postproduction. But it does not arrange the problem for my students when I’m broadcasting “Live” to them in the Zoom Meetings. Can you (or any fan here) explain why my Rodecaster Pro II give me such a low volume recording (-30 LUFS) ? Do you know this problem and did you find a solution? By the way, in Zoom I have > "Automatically adjust microphone volume > "Off" and original sound "ON". So what is it that I'm doing wrong ? Thank-You for you beautiful work Tom.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Hey Pierre! This is definitely strange. Are you running the RCP2 through Ecamm, or are you selecting it as your audio source in Zoom? This will help you narrow things down. If running through Ecamm, I always set the source audio to 80 and then adjust as needed. If running through Zoom, definitely be sure to match the settings form the video here. I always de-select the option to "Automatically adjust microphone volume" and then set the level myself. Turning off noise cancellation helps too, since it can often be way too aggressive. If you've done all that and your levels are STILL too low, then it might be time to reach out to Rode Customer Support just to see if they can troubleshoot with you to get it sorted out. Hopefully it's an easy fix!

Original Sound "ON", "Automatically adjust microphone volume" > OFF etc. So strange....Today I will make a record in Ecamm and check in Adobe Audition of the LUFS Levels are also low (as is Zoom) and let you know. One strange think is that in Zoom when I select USB1 "Chat" (or any rodecaster channels) as the mic input my volume setting of the mic is greyed ! So I cannot adjust the mic level in Zoom. But if I select as a'n input source one of my computer output I can adjust the sound level... I have reach Rode, let see if they answer. Anyway thank a lot Tom and if you have another suggestion... @TomBuck, have you noticed when routing audio through the RCP II that parties on the other end of the Zoom call hear audio feedback/echo when Original Sound is turned on (even with mix-minus applied)? I've had this issue under RCP II firmware v1.0.7 but never experienced it with the RCP or earlier versions of the FW IIRC. The weird thing is there's no echo on the RCP II recording but it's there on the Zoom recording (which seems to indicate that Zoom's Original Sound is bypassing mix-minus on the Rode mixer). Interested in your thoughts.

This was such a helpful video! I've been pretty disappointed by some of the Zoom call audio I've done lately, and now I can't wait to try it with these new settings. Will internet speed affect audio too?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I think internet speed definitely plays a role, but it seems to affect video before audio. For some reason Zoom recordings still always sound a little funky to me, but these settings definitely help!
@ArtBookshelfOdyssey2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck I also did some editing on the sound in Audacity which helped, but like I said I'm going to try these settings and compare the difference. My hope is it will truly become a work of Art... ahem. 😀

The most of my days use Google Meet for online classes and I do have a soundcard (A cheap mixer) for talking. =) I never used Zoom. (If I'm not going to count on that one day) I rarely would use Zoom. (for meeting)

Hey wondering How does your voice quality sound so good even though we dont see any single microphone close to you ? It feels like you are speaking directly into it

Thank you! When there's not a mic in frame, I'm using the Sennheiser MKH50 boomed out of frame. I have a whole video about it. It's not a cheap mic, but the quality is absolutely unparalleled.

Tom, if I'm doing a pod cast with other participants and I'm using an external camera, what does it look like when I change my eye line to look at the my computer screen at the person who is currently talking?
@tombuck11 ай бұрын
It really depends on how you position things. I've always tried to keep my camera lens as close to my monitor as possible, and then push my Zoom window near that edge of the display. I also trained myself to look at the lens instead of the screen, but that's also kind of a bummer because then you don't feel like you're "seeing" everyone else as much. I've done some videos recently on the Elgato Prompter, which I absolutely love and has been a total game changer for video calls since it really lets you feel like you're looking directly at the other person/people.

Are there reasons one should pick Zoom over say like Teams ?
@tombuck7 ай бұрын
They’ve both added so many features I don’t know if there’s any specific advantage to either. I think it mostly comes down to what an organization uses/pays for. If you’re an individual, then it’s just whichever you happen to prefer.

Hey! Do you know if contacting Zoom is still a thing now? Or should I zoom by this tip? Eh eh Also, would permanently increase the video quality make the experience worse for people with lower bandwidth? Would it could the feed to lag more? Thanks!
@GrahamAndersonis Жыл бұрын
Question: Is your Zoom audio input straight from your audio interface, or, are you using obs/ecam output? Myself, when I run audio from OBS to Zoom ( using NDI) it’s a buggier/laggier experience. With NDI, the video seems to work well-the audio has been buggy. Perhaps, NDI wasn’t meant to handle audio. Thank you for a great video!

When using Zoom I struggle with how to use a decent camera while looking at the PC screen. The camera has to be beside or above the screen (which is quite wide), so while I'm looking at the camera, I can't see the other people in the meeting. Vice versa if I'm looking at the screen I can't look into the camera. I've seen people who have a camera at their side, pointing at them watching the screen. It's really weird talking to someone's left ear. How do you work around that problem?
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
Personally, I've kind of trained myself to focus on the camera and then glance at my peripherals, but it's not ideal. Sometimes a teleprompter can be a huge help (using the screen to show the Zoom meeting instead of a script). Finding the right one and getting it all set up is a little tricky, but it was definitely helpful when I was doing a ton of Zoom time each week. It's really nice to feel like you're looking directly at someone when talking.

Update: If you work with a school zoom account, zoom is now asking for a written request from your admin to turn on group HD. I tried this in the first week of the new semester when my IT admin is swamped with a million more pressing tickets, and so I may be waiting until the heat death of the universe for zoom to turn on group HD for me.

Got the HD setting updated and it goes up to 1080p. It took a long time as expected partly because my IT team is really slammed. Also good to know though, Zoom needed get a response from the email account of the IT person that is registered as the administrator with Zoom, not just any IT person. I'm encouraging my students to use better cameras for our classes (most of them are adult professionals who use zoom for work as well) and especially better mics :)

Hi - I've set to record Gallery view, Speaker view, and Screen share, but when I test record, I only get the gallery view recording. Is it because I'm recording Locally and not on the Cloud?
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
This is a good question- I'm honestly not 100% sure. Zoom may have changed the way they handle recordings, so it might be a good idea to chat or email their customer support.

I test recorded to the Cloud and it recorded both Speaker and Gallery view so that worked. It would be great if Zoom had a feature that enabled you to record seperate video files for each speaker, same way it does audio. Currently I screen record on my Ninja and crop each frame which also works. Appreciate your channel @@tombuck
