@@FranksReactions You totally understood their business model. And once you get into their ecosystem, the "talking" between the programs and the hardware makes you want to buy more of their gears. That's why they can give it away with those gears, and it's profitable for them I would bet on it. I buy broadcast tool every month or so for my job. Their things do the work, are "cheaper in cost" than others and rarely fail (had only one fail of a switch that was 8 years old, running 24/7, on a not so good electrical current)! That tells it all.

Black Magic Desing is business magic. They understand perfectly the economic weight that means starting to work and making it easy from the first moment. The free software is functional with a relative difference from the paid one. They include licenses with many products that reduce the cost in some way, even if you can get more than one license and sell them that are not used, clean and legal. Updates with the best third-party software included. And all at a ridiculous price compared to other software of this level, like Photoshop. Empathic and human. A real and intelligent attitude.

Many freelancers and small production outfits want their own perpetual licence, but larger production companies need variable numbers of editors depending on what they are doing. It’s not a bad way to get users to try more advanced features and then hope they decide to either stay on rental or go on up to full version but I can’t see it being particularly useful in the long run considering the actual product is already pretty low cost at $300. Most would just rather buy the product and get it over with. I understand that Grant is anti-subscription model (and that is why Resolve has such traction and user loyalty now) but in order to keep improving the product by paying employees and generate a profit, they will likely have to go to some subscription model. We just have to hope that they understand that going the Adobe way of $50/month is entirely too expensive and $10/month for personal creators is reasonable. I don’t see this subscription model being a thing in the near term though.

I feel like more customers would purchase a rent-own-license with pause or cancel options for if they fall on hard times, then start up when back on their feet. Make the rent-to-own option a little more expensive than the flat-rate price and they would probably be rent/selling a lot more DaVinci Resolve licenses.

I would be fine with 15 bucks but with 30 bucks per month I could buy the whole studio version within 2 years..
@CameraTim7 ай бұрын
The only reason the rental option exists is because production houses were requesting a feature like this that can enable many more users onto the Studio version for a short period of time for a significantly lower cost. So for example, if a production studio needs five editors, and the project will last for 2 months, instead of paying $1,500 for five Studio licenses, they just rent for a total of $300. It's the same concept with camera/gear rentals. Instead of paying tens of thousands for a camera body, you can pay several hundred or a couple thousand (depending on varying factors) to get the camera for just the duration you need it to allow for a much more efficient production cost.

One thing worth pointing out is the reality of lifetime license and eligibility for all future upgrades. Suppose you buy Davinci resolve 19 for $300. They say that you will receive all future updates. But they are actually referring to only minor updates in version 19 like 19.1, 19.2 etc. . If in future they released a significantly upgraded version 20 then you may be asked to repurchase it. You do not automatically become eligible to get version 20 just because you own version 19. Just in case they release a new version every year as it expected in the age of AI then you end up paying $300 every year. I do not know about others but at least this was something I was not aware of.

If I want to get version 20 then I may have to purchase it again. It is true that currently company is giving free update to version 19 for all version 18 subscribers but this policy may not continue in future. I hope this clarifies.

Huh? You pay for *_any and all_* updates So if you bought studio when it was Resolve Studio 16, you also get Resolve Studio 17, 18, 19 and future ones I don't understand why you claim otherwise, it isn't true at all You buy once and get lifetime updates - it is part of the terms of use

DaVinci Resolve also offers a paid version - "DaVinci Resolve Studio" And that one is definitely not free.
