Like I said before I have the same bag. I use it as my "car kit" the small pocket on top is hygiene. Bottom small pocket is tools. Smaller main compartment is clothing. And the main large section holds my get home bag. It's a bag in a bag with essential survival gear. I also have a tool bag, car stuff bag, and a good first aid kit in the car. But that pack imho just isn't ready for hard use. Thats why for me it's regulated to car storage only. It works great for that. You put together better kits than most on KZbin. Keep up the good work. Cheers.

I like the collapsible water bottle addition. One thing I would suggest is a pair of light leather work gloves. I know you may have them in your car already, but I keep a dedicated clean pair in my get home bags also. They can fit over those knit gloves to keep your hands warmer, also! Also add a tea candle or two.

To be fair, here in Upstate, NY I'd likely need to swap out two very different "get home bags" one for each time of year I might use it. Winter and Sumner tend to vary wildly, climate wise. This last summer especially.
@bettersteps2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the most common mistake people make in creating a bag like this is buying items that you "think" you'll never use. So, people by sub-par items. A survival bag is like car insurance, you pray you never have to use it but if you do you're thankful you have the best. That is the attitude you should have when creating a bag like this. Get the best.

Love it! One trick you might want to use is to create a "skivvy roll" from your socks, underwear and (I'd suggest adding) a t-shirt. It's a military trick for organising gear / saving space.
@KitbashedSurvival4 жыл бұрын
What do you do? Roll them all up together into one bundle?
@KirstenBayes4 жыл бұрын
@@KitbashedSurvival yes, you lay a t-shirt flat, fold it in half lengthways, put your shorts (or other!) in the middle. The trick is then to lay your socks at right angles to the t-shirt, with the open ends sticking out over the edge of the shirt. You then roll up the t-shirt bundle super tight, then roll down the open end of your socks over the bundle. "USMC skivvy roll" in KZbin search will show you how to do it! Sensible Prepper aka Scootch shows how it's done ;)

The thing about these kinds of kits only meant for a day without a focus on wilderness survival is this: What situation would you find yourself within a days walk from home and also not able to get help from random people? I have a hard time thinking of one. Better to have a wilderness survival kit with a few urban additions in my opinion. You could make a tiny little separate bag of convenience items to get that functionality if you wanted.

Consider Lithium based batteries over Alkaline based. Better storage characteristics. Wider operating temperature range. (-40° to 140°F for Lithium, below 0°F Alkaline’s capacity plummets)

Add candles/emergency candles to your kit. They can be used for light and if you light one in your car, it creates enough heat to stay warm. (Keep your window cracked and emergency candles can stay lit for hours)

This is the original size I started with for my get home bag. Literally almost the same bag except mine was black. I thought mine was very well stocked. But the one thing that I hadn't considered at the time is when you might be needing to use it. In other words, I didn't really have mine set up to be able to handle all weather conditions I might come into contact in this area. So for instance, if something happened during the dead of winter, I could probably survive it with a fire while resting but it would have been difficult. Also I didn't have things in my original kit like gloves for moving debris if and when needed. I also didn't have any type of a gas mask or goggles for potential things like tear gas. While I had food, I wouldn't call it high calorie sustainable food. It was more minimalistic food like survival tabs. So I went out and got a larger pack. I can now survive fairly comfortably temperatures down to 20°. And uncomfortably survived temperatures down to -10°. I have better food that will actually feed me and keep my energy level up. I have a vastly more comprehensive first aid kit etc. The entire kit still weighs 22lbs and allows me to stay outside for 3 Days never having to come in contact with people if I don't want.

Thanks for your input!

I would add a couple of n95 masks or something similar and a travel bottle of purell or some sort of hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer can also help start a fire if necessary. Also a couple of pairs of latex gloves if the first aid kit doesn't have any.

It's hard to be too critical of this bag without knowing where you live and the climate. I think in most areas of the country your number one priority is to keep your core temperature up. To that end, I would drop a bunch of that stuff and add a real sleeping bag and a pad to keep you off the ground. I think a more robust poncho would do double duty as rain gear and a improvised shelter.
@KitbashedSurvival4 жыл бұрын
I have those types of things in my bug out bag. The get home bag isn’t really designed for sleeping outside so much. It’s more likely I’d be sleeping in my car or something like that. Also, I live in the southeast US where it doesn’t get too too cold on a regular basis. If I lived up north the contents of the bag would be quite different. Thanks for the feedback!

Not to be an a**, but shampoo and conditioner? Really? How about a bar of soap? Dental Floss, for many reasons. Not being negative, but weight is important. It's a GOB, lose the cables and plugins. Get some cheap dollar store solar lights, and some good rechargeables batts. Won't lose your lights. Great to see the life boat food. Maybe store some bottles of water in your vehicle. Adain, ot negative. None of us is a smart as all us us. Don't think so, but if it goes bad, it will go all the way bad. Sure hope not

I chose the shampoo/conditioner because I have long hair, so I’d rather have the shampoo double as soap than have a bar of soap double as shampoo. Good point on the floss, I’ll have to add some. Weight is important, but it’s actually not that heavy at all...at least to me. Thanks for the suggestions!
