This is the Mystery Ranch 2 DAP, outfitted, and integrated into my system. This is an awesome pack, with potential to do much more than serve as a Get Home Bag. #survival #gethomebag #mysteryranch

Thank you! I’d love to take credit for it, but it’s a hack I got from some military training.

With any GHB type video it helps to know more about the situation you envision facing. For example; terrain type, expected weather conditions, temperatures, distance to be covered, duration, scenario providing the need for a GHB, physical fitness, hazards etc. That way it provides a bit more context and helps with understanding your choices and the reasoning behind it, it also helps people to make suggestions. From your video I gathered you had a 100 mile walk, in rugged terrain, in potentially bad weather, your route may involve a river crossing and you have access to several storage units where you can re supply. I was surprised you only had snacks in your kit, I know you have food stashed in various places but what if you can’t access them for some reason? Fires, hostile crowds, looted, etc how far to the next one or maybe you were injured and you took a lot longer to get there? Calorie dense food is a lot more available now and easier to carry. Similarly, I didn’t really understand the need for a trap kit. Why waste time trapping and fishing for food when success is not guaranteed when you can just carry food? You mentioned you were paranoid, used anonymous pre paid cards to buy your gps and said you would use the map to find dead ground to stay hidden but did not elaborate on what or whom you were hiding from. So if you were attempting to evade from someone surely the priority would be to get home i.e. to safety and setting traps and fishing would just delay you and increase the risk of discovery? I’m assuming 15 miles per day, every day (terrain/weather/ injury/hostiles/error etc all variables) but that’s roughly 6 days all being well. I don’t know your fitness levels or conditioning or terrain so it may be much less or, more likely, far longer so I would look at better transport options such as an e-bike or regular bike stashed at one of your storage units. You mentioned a river you had to cross maybe you could use a canoe or dingy to cover some ground, assuming it’s navigable? You can travel further and faster than on foot. One last observation is you have a tarp but no real warm clothes or insulation so I’m not sure if this is a summer bag or temperatures don’t get very low where you are but you mentioned rain so I’m thinking that there is a high probability you might get wet. Cold, wet and wind is a recipe for hypothermia and if you can’t light a fire (because you’re staying hidden) or you’re lying on the ground at night wet and cold this will be a problem. The space blankets you have are not that effective, they tear easily and are designed to reflect heat so if you’re already cold they will just reflect cold back at you and if you are lying on one you will lose heat by conduction. If you don’t recognise you are suffering from the effects of hypothermia, and this happens far more easily than people think especially when you add in exhaustion and lack of calories, you will be in trouble. Anyway, you’re probably bored by now so i’ll leave it there. Good luck.

Thank you for the very well thought out comment! I'll address a few of your points here, but I have planned an entire series of videos that will cover everything that you mentioned. I carry enough snacks to get me to a cache, where I can resupply with plenty of freeze dried food. We freeze dry our own meals, and they are very calorically dense. BIkes aren't an option. I'm moving through terrain without trails, that you can sometimes barely walk through. As for clothing, I'm wearing appropriate clothing for the expected conditions. I only carry socks, underwear, a spare Merino Wool T Shirt, a bonnie cap and a base layer. The rivers are navigable, and one of the crossings is the Missouri RIver. If I can find a canoe, john boat, etc, I'll use it, but it's most likely a swim. As you mention, it all depends on what happened, to cause my hike home. I'm not really a conspiracy theorist, but there are any number of things that can go wrong. I've seen social decay, in various parts of the world. It happens faster than many think. And it's ugly. My goal is to stay as far away from people as possible. There's no way, I'd make 15 miles per day in the Ozarks. It's probably more like 6-10 on a good day. I'll address this more in upcoming videos. You added a lot of food for thought. I really appreciate it.

Another excellent video and straight to the point. This seems to be an unnecessarily uncomfortable topic for some people, but as with most things, people fear what they do not understand or what they don't want to face. This should be among the most normal things in your day to day. Preparedness is just insurance no different from car insurance or health insurance. I know you had plenty of fire starting kit , the only thing I would add to mine personally would be a small stove. A Jetboil or MSR, SOTO, etc, if for nothing else except to boil water. A cup of coffee and a Peak Refuel meal or something similar can make a world of difference for morale on a long trek like that. Especially if you are trying to stay hidden and don't want the smoke or smell from a fire. Just my thoughts. Keep them coming!!

Thanks man! It is a mindset. We never know when everything is going to go upside down. Cyber attacks can cripple the gas stations, atm networks, etc. folks without access to their money can become feudal quickly. I do have freeze dried meals. I just don’t carry them in that pack. I have stuff secured at a place outside of the city near a place I call “The Farm.” That spot is about a day from my office. I’ve thought about cooking, and it’s just not really an option. The pack is about as heavy as I want, and I don’t mind eating cold food. I make Cold Brew Coffee, and freeze dry that, and it’s absolutely delicious with cold water added! Most of our family meals left overs are freeze dried. I store them along my likely routes in Ammo Cans. I won’t starve. Anyway, I really appreciate the feedback!

I would maybe add the folding saw of some sort. Usually lite but could be expedient if needing a limb braced. And all the other uses it can have.

Excellent video TW. Pack and contents do look a lot heavier than it does, amazing. Might I suggest putting fire starting pouch in a qt. size baggy for extra protection. Wet lighters suck brother. Oh, and love the hat!! Take care and God Bless!!

Thank you for watching, and the comment! I was thinking about putting the fire kit in a zip lock, just the other day. I could lose a couple of ounces, and the space of the Maxpedition pouch. Hoyt! best bows in the world! :)

I have the Garmin InReach unit and when it starts up my name and address is displayed in case it gets lost, might get it back. The InReach service is linked to me. I never thought one time about hiding this information. Please explain your reasoning for this. I might want to change. Thanks for the video.

Well, the Inreach has a different purpose. It’s for people who WANT to be found, and people who desire communication in remote areas. Some folks don’t want to be found or identified. I am a little more interested in obscurity, in a get-home scenario. If I were on a recreational hike on the AT or in remote forests, I’d have an Inreach, or a similar unit. Does that make sense?

Thank you for the input, and for watching. My wife is currently working on new freeze dried meals for me. This is enough to get me the 20 or so miles to my first cache. It’s not intended to sustain me for a 100 mile walk.

Way too large and heavy. Way too much junk you'll never use. Your GET HOME mission is just that...GET HOME...ASAP. Its not comfortable camping.

Thanks for the feedback. The entire package is just over 15 lbs. my walk home from my office is over 100 miles. That’s about 2 weeks in this terrain. There’s nothing comfortable about that. What would you suggest I drop from the load out? I have a few pre staged gear and resupply points along the way, where I can dump unnecessary gear, and resupply food, btw. I sincerely want to hear your input! Thanks!

Upon a second viewing... 15lbs doesn't seem like too much. I would suggest at least an overnight practice or two to test it. Camera angle makes your pack look much larger than it actually is. If I could, I'd recommend you add Benadryl for allergic reactions (could save a life), aspirin, an anti-diarrheal, and some mole skin. Good luck to you and yours!!!
