If you love the locust, i recommend you Arab on radar and An Albatross. All those bands are tag like Sasscore, a thing i discovered using Rate your music. Thats a scene i was really into and never knew that had a genre term. I was heavy into screamo, emoviolence all that stuff in the 10s. I started with the post rockish like Envy and City of caterpillar, and ended in the wildest stuff. It was one of those things that made me more close to other scenes that came out from that.

I've actually seen Arab on Radar. Pretty sure they were from Providence, and they played with Lightning Bolt fairly often.

Asterisk* was Jonas (ex Bloodpath), Stefan (guitar+vocals in Randy) and André (drums in DS13). And the DisAxis reference is not wrong. While on tour with Locust and Jenny Piccolo I know they talked about Crossed Out as an influence.

I think Heroin could safely be called a patient zero for this sound. San Diego seemed to take the early DC emo and warp it with fast hardcore and make it something a little different from both. Two more obscure bands in this style I would recommend are Festival of Dead Deer and Robot has Werewolf Hand. Great video, Pat!

Pat, great vid (as usual). I love how you get into the weeds with this stuff. Most of us know the heavy hitters, but with you, we get a few things to check out (I’m excited about this Asterisk*). I remember a lot of scene people wearing tight black tshirts and rocking the “Spock haircut” (lol) in the wake of these bands rolling through town. Also, haven’t heard the name Seven Days Of Samsara in 20 years! Very cool! Usurp Synapse was another band who (I thought) matched the live fury of Orchid. Also, dude, love the addition of some A/V snippets! You’re very gifted describing this stuff, but always cool to get a snippet built in!

we use to call kind of the dirty metallic hardcore/grindy/but screamy stuff "chaoscore" atleast from what i rememeber in the early mid 90s. especially the bands from the northeast and eastern canada, and a few from maybe nevada and utah. I use to like acrid from canada, ulcer from mass, forced expression from iowa, monster x upstate ny... basically the dirtier less metallic stuff., but i was alot more into the heavy noisecore crustcore side of things back then. that stuff wasnt really "powerviolence" in my mind, but there were quite a few other metallic kinds dischordant hardcore/screamy bands that i overlooked in the 90s playing with hardcore bands like overcast, one king down, blood for blood, that i always called "chaoscore" bands

One band I really liked back in the day was Blood Brothers. They started out really noisy and chaotic. They got less noisy over time but not less weird. When you mentioned The Locust sounding snotty and annoying, I immediately thought of this band. I remember them often being talked about in the same breath. When I couldn’t stand the Locust I found these guys to be more palatable.

@@GroundZeroSalem They were my gateway to noisier chaotic music. Their early stuff is very noisy and unpleasant. For some reason even though I listened to nothing else like them at the time, I instantly liked them. Funnily enough they got signed to a major label during the mainstream screamo/Emo boom. They got ever so slightly more accessible but mostly just relative to the racket they’d made previously. March On Electric Children or Burn, Piano Island, Burn are good starters. They got less heavy but never less bizarre. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts.

Very informative and fun video. As always, I have some homework to do lol. A few bands that might be worth checking out if you are not already familiar (which you probably are, I know you can’t include everything in every video), are Saetia, Potraits of Past, Funeral Diner and Yaphet Kotto(although those would probably just be categorized as screaming, no real grind elements). Cheers dude, great stuff as always 🍻🤘 Side note- you ever get into Hot Cross? I loved pretty much everything those guys did when they were around

I actually saw Yaphet Koto once at a warehouse in Providence with Municipal Waste out of all bands. They were great, but I've never actually listened to their studio stuff. All of the other bands I've heard of but haven't listened to. I have a mix that a guy made for me when I lived in Maine that had Hot Cross and Saetia, and a bunch of other bands from that era. Some times that stuff gets a little too "noodley" for me, but it's pretty cool. I just grabbed a Majority Rule LP and Page 99 LP this week. Those bands are pretty astounding.

Im partial to the term "emotional hardcore". Something happened when the Nation Of Ulysses influence migrated to San Diego. It became noisier, artier and more caustic. My assumption is the Gravity bands were influenced by the West coast bands of the day like Infest, Crossed Out and Neanderthal but I'm not sure if that's accurate.
