@@marialuke2116 Most consider it a black sheep since it was a huge genre shift, was much more story heavy, and featured mostly new characters (since this was in the era where SEGA owned a majority of the XX characters; ArcSys made BlazBlue specifically to make enough money to buy those rights back). It's a fine gateway into GG for people that aren't looking for a fighting game, since the art and music are incredible and the gameplay is fine. The story is convoluted no matter where in the series you start anyway.

Don't know exactly why, but compared to dynamic backgrounds of latest fighting games, the static wallpapers of old ones makes it so that most of the old attack animations have more impact. Less distractions perhaps? Don't know.

I haven't played much of GG beyond Rev 2. Looking back at Arc Sys fighters, I'm always curious how their structures look with versions in mind. Like, in Blazblue's case, each character will gain a couple attacks per new game, but also for some reason entire attack strings will play out differently. Only a small handful of BnBs for Ragna and Hazama are entirely untouched and still viable even just between Chrono Phantasma and Central Fiction. And I gotta wonder if that's just been an Arc Sys thing in general and in say every version of Accent Core or even like P4A and P4AU there's small differences like that for everyone to keep it fresh, or if that's exclusive to a series or two they have.

Tbh its not that its weird, it's just really inconsistent. For the main series it was just adding an X to the title (Guilty Gear>Guilty Gear XX>Guilty Gear Xrd with Xrd=3rd+X). The different versions of XX don't even really have a consistent naming convention, like its GGXX Reload, then GGXX Accent Core then GGXX AC+R. Xrd's versions tho are pretty self explanatory, Xrd: Sign, Xrd: Revelator, Xrd: Rev2. But then Strive drops the X naming convention entirely so we're in the weeds again. Imo Blazblue's is pretty confusing cause the entire naming convention is just that the first word of the subtitle needs to start with the letter C. So it's liks Blazblue: Calamity Trigger, Continuum Shift, Chrono Phantasma, and Central Fiction (also Cross Tag Battle fits)

Just jump in, rollback means there could be more new people getting into the game on your level, and when you do get bodied don't get tilted and try to learn from it. At least in a game like GG it still looks cool while you're getting evaporated

Rollback netcode is a type of online netcode that is taking over fighting games and replacing delay. I dont have time to go into the tech jargon of it but when its well implemented you can play games lagless with the game feeling just like it would offline.

Ok so, most fighting games by default have what is called "delay based netcode." The way this netcode works is that the game creates an offest, a delay, on your inputs to compensate for the time it takes to send information from one player to the other. The amount of delay depends on the quality of connection (can range from 2 frames in a good connection to 12-15 frames in really bad connections). The issues with this system come from the variability in connection quality. If at any point packet loss occurs or frames drop or Ping spikes this will cause the amount of frames being delayed to fluctuate, which in turn directly effects your play. You can't really adapt to changing frame delay in a mid match, and if mid combo your delay spikes from 2 to 6 your timing will get fucked up and you'll drop it. And playinf in lots of delay just feels bad. Rollback Netcode is a system developed specifically to address these issues. In practice its essentially a straight upgrade on top of delay based netcode (in that rollback uses delay based netcode as its basis), and what it does is that it uses software to predict the actions your opponent will take in the time between inputs are sent and received and then will "roll back" if the prediction was wrong (creating what looks like a teleporting effect). This is able to work pretty well in fighting games because you spend a lot of time locked into animations, if you do a move, the game knows that for the next like 25 frames youre gonna be doing that exact move, if you're comboing your opponent the game knows thay for the next 5 seconds your opponent is gonna be in hitstun etc. And in doing so it keeps the amount of delay stable. The purpose of rollback is to preserve game feel, to make online games feel like offline because there's no or very little delay (you can actually set rollback games to have 0 frame delay if the connections are good enough) and most importantly the amount of frames delayed never changes during a match. Some games like Skullgirls and +R let you set the amount of delay depending on the ping of your opponent, whereas games like Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat X/11 have it set to a benchmark that doesnt ever change (i believe its 3 frames in both games)

Leaving netcode aside, since this game has objectively better netcode than Rev2, really as far as systems go it depends what you like. The actual game part is very fun for both. I'd say the version you'd like more would depend mostly on 3 things: difficulty, the strength of your character, and Roman Cancels. In regards to difficulty, +R is harder than any version of Xrd because it has system mechanics (False Roman Cancel, and Slashback for example) that are difficult to take advantage of because of small timing windows. Some FRC windows are like 2 frames, and some characters absolutely require FRCs to be played well (for example Baiken's damage is extremely low if you can't FRC Tatami Gaeshi and her j.D). Compare this to Xrd where FRC doesnt exist and system mechanics that take its place (like just regular Roman Cancels being made more universal) being much more lenient. Strength of your character imo is pretty self explanatory. If the character you like to play sucks in one game but is godlike in another (like Slayer is cheap as fuck in +R but is pretty not great in Xrd, same with Potemkin, whereas Johnny is just ok in +R but is the god emperor of Xrd) then I'd imagine you'd have more fun in the version where your character is not trash. Also applies if your character isn't in one of these games. Like no ABA or Testament in Xrd but no Leo or Sin in +R. And then Roman Cancels. By far the most contentious aspect of Xrd is how it handles Roman Cancels. Specifically it adds Yellow Roman Cancels, which allow you to cancel the startup frames of a move that isn't directly hitting your opponent (so for example you can cancel the start up of Ky's charge fireball, causing it to still come out but he has no recovery so he can move behind it). In addition to this all Roman Cancels in Xrd cause time to slow for your opponent. This changes the flow of the game a ton as it gives you so much time to assess situations, it allows super degenerate oki situations, it completely reshapes the way people approach neutral. Some people love this, other people hate it and imo there are good arguments on both sides.
