THANK YOU. The oh-so-subtle Brit shade when you said "I don't think any of them get it...QUITE right." and the facial expression that followed spoke VOLUMES [chef's kiss]. This is the best tutorial I've seen for "Get Lucky" and you break it down like baby food. And you said you didn't think yours was 100% either, but it's VERY close. There is even more magical minimalism going on that I have yet to hear somebody other than Nile replicate note-for-note and rhythmic accent-for-accent. It seems simple but is in fact, a deceptively complex part. I'm off to go learn "Lose Yourself to Dance". 🎸😎

Excellent lesson, as always. What I'm noticing listening to the track is that there's also a third part : for large parts of the song the guitar plays a simple octave pattern - 3 bars on F# and 1 bar on E. This happens in the second half of the Verses and throughout the Choruses. The closest I can get is to play x 9 x 11 x x for the F# and x 7 x 9 x x for the E.

You might be the only one on youtube who plays it well here on youtube!! Now I also understand why i 'as a producer' why in a distant past... i did often get a discussion, when I told that the reefs were not played well. Because really 80% of the guitarists play completely wrong chords, on this song here on the internet!! But you play the accord scheme well! So it seems that many of them..., can not even hear 'the essential nuances' in such a chord diagram ;-) And that is very shocking to discover... or not?

one important thing that this lesson points at is that the rhythm lies within your fretting hand and the way you mute the strings. some might get confused trying to get the rhythm with their left hand a good lesson indeed 👍

I used to have a G&L ASAT Classic in the same finish. Leo called the G&L model "Butterscotch Blonde". I'm sure he had to change the name that Fender used as to avoid any "Imperial Entanglements" (since you also used a Stars Wars reference). Just a classic finish for a tele. Makes me wish I still had mine.

If you ever watch Rodgers discuss his style, he is quick to say that many people get his style wrong. He mostly plays only the treble strings on his licks and rarely a full six string strum. He has a bass player to take care of the low end.

@bonepicker19 жыл бұрын
+G Rich Niles never plays full chords, always triads ,while strumming in a piano licks style....ala Giorgio Moroder (keyboards) Nile's said he tried to pattern his strumming in the way that Giorgio played the synthesizer in the 1970's.
@Asimov165 жыл бұрын
When I watched the Daft Punk video it does look like he is playing full chords at the beginning, but bare in mind when people make the video very often they are miming to the soundtrack even though they can play it. As there is no way the guy out of daft punk could play a bass with metal fingers LOL. However I have seen him do this song on his own on stage and it looks like he is using full chords there too.

Regarding the main Funk strumming part (I haven't got to the lead lines yet), I'm cool with it all at a slower tempo than the original, except for the E chord at the end of the progression where the strumming pattern changes. I can't tap my foot on the beat, and make that change, when the whole riff starts on the AND AFTER 1. Either my foot tapping on the beat loses it, or I screw up the pattern, or both. I can do it fine without tapping my foot. I can do it fine if I keep the same pattern as the other chords on the E. I can do it fine if I start the whole strumming pattern on the 1 instead of the AND AFTER 1. But I can't do all three together faster than about 80 bpm! I'm gonna try and just focus on that different E chord strumming pattern, slow it right down, and work it up in tempo again, but I've done this before and I always start to lose it when I get to about 85 bpm. It's INFURIATING!!! :) Any hints?

Tone wise you must plug a strat on neck position with a vintage pickup single-coil with volume and tone on 10, send it to a compressor pedal then split the signal chain into 2: 1 goes straight to the sound desk/interface preamp into a neve-style preamp and compressor and 2 goes to any mic-d fender blackface amp (pref. Twin, Deluxe Reverb or Hot Rod). Get your high and middle end from the direct sound and mix it with the low end from the amplifier till you reach your desired sound. Then you go to final EQ, maybe another compressor then the reverb.

Ah, and Get Lucky has two guitars. One plays the chords line you see here and the other one keeps playing that almost palm-muted melody line from the beginning.

Hey. Was wondering...I always felt like he was playing minor 7 chords instead, could be wrong though.
@acpg10 жыл бұрын
That was my first instinct, but I definitely can't hear any flat 7ths in the actual guitar parts on the record. I think the piano is probably playing minor 7ths though, so that's the overall harmonic feeling. I could be wrong too though. Only way to clear it up would be a private lesson with Mr Rodgers himself!
@mrjazzman20077 жыл бұрын
seems to me it's in the key of A - except it never resolves to the home chord. So it's II-IV-VI-V Never resolving to home chord is what gives the sequence its feeling of being constantly on the move... like being out all night for the fun

Interesting point of view, but... Have you ever tried to look at this way: Song starts with IV minor chord, Then goes to VI major (that could easilly could be added a C# as funky disco 7th and E as 9th), And now we got to the I, which is minor chord and tonal center of this song, And go to the VII major... Important part of defining key is main theme (in this case a vocal line), and then you could much easier see what is the tonality. After all they came with idea to make a pop hit, not some kind of dorian-funky groove just for them selfs!!! :) Bottom line - the of the song is F# minor!!! And sorry if i was beeing rude, but i've already seen in my country that a lot of people making same mistake...
@TheMal56 жыл бұрын
stanasko that's not exactly right - it's in B Dorian, the minor mode with a sharpened 6th, and it's based around the B note and not F#
