Glad to see you back at it. That heat will really sap it out of you. Hang in there. I just did an overnight at blue springs state park down here in Florida. It was unbelievably hot even at night. You've got this Evan, take care.

I watched your AT videos in 2020. and really enjoyed them. I lived in Ohio then and moved to Denver in Aug 2020. Now I want to do the CO trial both by foot and bike and am looking forward to watching your entire Co Trail adventure. Gear and logistics are what I need to learn more about. I'm still working full time so don't have time for a through hike now, but I will correct that problem very soon. Thank you!

97 degrees is exactly why I delayed my 2023 Colorado trip until late September and early October. Passed on volunteering with the CTF this summer for that very reason. Waited the summer out on Lake Martin, AL cabin. Trust me, at 70, the confidence and determination does indeed wane. At about your age, my will power discovered I wasn't ten feet tall and bullet proof much longer.

Invest in lightweight loose-fitting, long-sleeved cotton shirt. Keep the sun (heat and skin damage) and some of the fly bites off you. A good piece of summer camping kit.

Evan, awesome first video!!! Two days and no storms yet . . . that's a win! I'm trying to decide what 500-mile maximum trail to do this year and it comes down to the Sheltowee Trace or maybe doing the CT again (NOBO this time maybe?). It's still gonna be hot in KY in Sep, so that may drive me to come out to CO again. Would love to hear your thoughts when you get deeper into this journey. The whole CT is amazing, but the West Collegiates and the San Juans are to die for! Good luck, and stay hydrated!!! 🤘🕓

Thanks for the comment. Difficult trail for me so far - probably the terrible heat even more than the elevation. The flies and mosquitoes are horrendous but I try to view them as emissaries sent from the universe to teach me patience. Sheltowee Trace v. The Colorado Trail? CT every time. My all-time favorite trail is the Benton MacKaye Trail. A difficult trail but you get to enjoy complete solitude.

@EvansBackpackingVideos haha...laughed out loud at the bugs comment. They weren’t an issue in late Aug/Sep. I hope they relent as you guys move south. My sinuses were my most challenging part. They were dry and clogged the whole trail. It's a hard damn trail!!! But you're a hard man!! Stay strong!! I have been considering the BMT. It might be a good option this year, but I need cooler temps. Hot hiking sucks. Tell the crew hello! 🕓

Hey Evan, I'm excited to follow your new adventure. I want to say that I really appreciate the educational aspect of your videos. As I'm sure you are aware, there aren't many hikers that do the research you do or include that information in their videos. It's awesome, thank you. And tell those kids to sunblock the hell out of those tattoos. they will fade a whole shade lighter in that elevation. lol

Glad to see you and the Liz/Luke team back out on the trail. Doesn’t look like the heat is going away soon for the west and now the east appears to be next as the jet stream shifts north some east of the Mississippi. You know the drill for the heat, water and electrolytes and sunscreen on the tops of the feet for certain. I know you’re nearly a week into it so probably have a rhythm now. Stay cool (you’re already ‘cool’) and good luck!

I hiked the CT in 2017. I was surprised at how much of the trail I recognized from this video and am looking forward to your next installment. The CT was my test to see if I should hike the PCT. I figured if I wished the trail was longer when I finished, then I should. I hiked the PCT in 2018. I was waiting for some video of sheep as you walked by the cliffs.

and with familiar faces from your AT hike too ... I used to post as Ed Wiget, we both hiked sheltowee trace trail, then I hiked BMT the year after you, but then I have been dealing with cancer so no hikes for me .... but at least I am still here because many I was in treatment with aren't. I started training last year for a hike while doing "cancer recovery" ... got to be the dumbest idea I ever had. Didn't pan out at all. Started again a few weeks ago, more mentally like old me now ... still stubborn as usual lol

I’m curious to see the rest of this series for one specific reason: your shelter system is virtually identical to mine…an HMG 8x10 tarp with an MLD bug bivy. This has always been sufficient coverage out east, where you are almost always camping with some tree cover and mild-to-moderate wind exposure. But I want to do the CT in ‘25, and I’m trying to figure out if I need to buy a new shelter for it. I’m eager to see how you fared. And if you see this comment and feel like replying with a little CT tarp beta, I wouldn’t complain.
@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos Жыл бұрын
Yes, a tarp will work fine. I use a square tarp myself but that point shouldn’t make a difference to you. Most of the time you’ll be able to camp in the trees. In my videos, I tried to show my tarp set-ups every night to assist people like you.

Evan, been waiting for this adventure to kick off since Liz announced it last year. I understand your trepidation. The heat and altitude will test you. "It's a dry heat"...right?!! You might consider a lightweight wide brimmed hat. So easy to get burned out there. If not, don't forget the sunscreen! Best of luck! I hope any self-doubt subsides as you get into your trail routine.

On the Colorado it's very rocky and steep. I found that mostly you find flat spots to camp near the water sources. Not as easy to camp as on the AT.
