Thank you so much for this video! If I keep in my physical sim card, how do I ensure that data isn't drawn from my home sim card to an extortionate price but rather on the e-sim? Does it automatically 'prefer' and take data from a esim, which is local to the country I am in at the given time? Or would I need to make these changes and toggle on off in settings? I'm also wondering should I still toggle roaming off when I get to the airport in my home country - and should this be turned on again when I land or am I not roaming, since I use a local esim? Thank you!
@foXnoMad25 күн бұрын
You can disable the home SIM to be sure it you're using only the "travel" SIM. When you are using the "travel" (e)SIM you will need data roaming on (in the case of Airalo) so as long as the home eSIM is disabled in the settings, you can be sure it won't be used. Hope this helps!

This is all great and your video is very effective but about the 8 minute mark you touch on a hurdle that I was unable to get past - the "other settings" in my Samsung 21. I could never get the APN settings correct. The user guide was written by someone who assumed the user would have no difficulty jumping from screen to screen without images to keep you on track. In the end I never could get it to work. If they had voice support, or remote desktop access where they could set it up from their end, I have no doubt it would have been up and running in less than a minute. I don't get why the self install of the esim (yes, I scanned to QR code) didn't just complete the process instead of getting you 90% of the way. In the end my trip was great anyway with plenty of public WiFi, but had I needed data for directions while driving, I'd have been screwed. Plus as it was for European markets and I was in the US, there was no way to confirm it was going to work when I got there and it didn't! This was especially annoying as I could see that the eSIM had 5 bars of signal strength the entire time I was in Germany and Austria.

The latest iPhones in Europe still have sim slots, and with good reason, you have wider choice of competitive cell companies, most much cheaper than the limited number of plans offered, I noticed only one plan offered in Italy, and Italy has 6 or more cell companies. Also iPhones sold in Europe use USB-pots which allow for cheaper external storage, rather than expensive internal storage. Cell plans in Europe are much cheaper too, 30-35 euros a month average vs 65-75 dollars a month average in the U.S. Presently the dollar and the euro are equal in value.
@Onbekommerd2 жыл бұрын
A few corrections: iPhones in Europe do NOT have USB ports or any other way to use external storage. Cost of ‘plans’ (do you mean contracts or prepaid deals?) varies enormously between countries. I have a monthly prepaid plan with &GB data, unlimited texts and unlimited calls (within the country I live in) for about 12 Euros.

@@Onbekommerd you’re correct about usb-c, that won’t take effect until 2024, my point about cost for cell plans was that it is significantly cheaper, which it is in France, Italy, and wherever you live. The U.S. is a kleptocracy, everything over here is more expensive, corporations rule and steal.

Japan has very strict rules, basically forbidding tourists making calls using anything but the most expensive plans by one company (Mobal). In other words eSIMs don't solve the problems in some strict countries. What I really like to know is whether eSIMS solve the problem of the other country in my travels that is a major headache - India. Geez, the grief of impractical rules there, in this case government rather than corporate. Yes, I know there is a risk of jihadis using cell phones, but at what cost to hobbling the entire telecommunications industry? A policeman must visit the hotel, you have to change SIMS every state. Or was this just in 2017?

You should be able to use dual SIM /eSIM in that situation and you can turn them on and off as you like. Glad my video was helpful!

Did you use data only or did you use cellular as well?
@jiriinuk Жыл бұрын
@@frenchustube I did not use anything this time. I was extremely disappointed. After landing in the US Airalo was unable to activate my data credit and repeatedly answered with some error message (I don't remember the error number) that I later found out was quite frequent, many people encountered it and no support/fix was offered. So, unless Airalo apologises to me and returns my credit I do not intend to use it again.

A regular SIM card gives both data AND talk while eSIM gives you data only. Why?
@foXnoMad Жыл бұрын
This is not the case - although I can see why there's some confusion. eSIMs can be talk and data or one or the other - it really depends on the carrier and what they offer.

If one travels a lot to different continents, the e-Sim only phone is NOT the way to go in 2022. Apple put the cart b4 the horse.

In some ways this change is as inconvenient as anything new. But now, all the carriers will be forced to add esim capability…. Not unlike how removing the phone jack forced the issue of wireless headphones.
@foXnoMad2 жыл бұрын
True and having used eSIMs for years now, I find it more convenient for the most part than physical SIM cards.

@@foXnoMad In my case, I had been hearing about new phones with dual sims…. And thought that would be great for traveling…. No exchanging sims and keeping track of unused sims. So, when I finally got a dual sim phone…. I was looking forward to loading up an esim from my carrier (xfinity). I was shocked when they said. “We do not support esim functionality!” Now, my wife got a new iPhone…. Which only has esim…. And presto, just a few months later and now xfinity supports esim

I'm not surprised - Apple's got a lot of influence in the market, eSIMs are about to become a lot more common, quickly.
