Having been a city council member who went through a lot of these types of meetings and discussions, you just have to understand that the situation is different when you're in a group of people than when you're managing time by yourself. The politics of a group discussion often necessitate that you have a "bike shed" discussion, even when it's far from the main point. The reason is that you're garnering good emotions and goodwill from members for an ultimate consensus to be made at a later date. The members will feel better about the project at large if they can focus on their pet bike shed. As an individual, it's necessary to identify your bike shed issues and deal with them accordingly. Curate your time, social media, context switching, all that in order to facilitate longer sessions of directed focus towards a few key issues that will have compound returns on your life and goals. There's no way around this if you want to advance and compete in this world. But you have to understand that this puts you in the top top top percentage of people on the planet and that your ability to get "straight to the point" will not be appreciated in group discussions where the majority of people lack focus and fixate mainly on their own emotions over real results.
