Good tips. People should be careful with how much additional light. We’ve done it in the past and had one hen have a blowout. I think it was because she didn’t get a rest.

Interesting I don't think I even want to know what a "blow out" is

@@BIGALTX you don’t. It was horrible. Was our favorite hen at the time. She was a Wyandotte. Because that happened fairly early in our chicken learning process we decided to just live with no or limited eggs in winter. Another semi-fix that we’ve found is having hens that just start laying just before fall/winter. That way we at least have some eggs.

I agree with this no-nonsense man! My rooster wakes up the whole neighborhood at 4.30am. depriving us of almost 2 hours of sleep. Got 12 chickens and get two eggs right now. If I get up that early you better freaking believe you're going to get up early too and work!😂

I stopped the layer pellets (TSC brands) and went to all grains, kitchen scraps, garden scraps during the spring/summer. I wasn't getting any eggs from 30 hens. I get about 20 a day with no extra light now that I ditched the grains. Sure, I could add light but I let my employees have a short vacation. ;) I have plenty from the rest that are laying. I let nature take it's course and I also have plenty of scrambled eggs in the freezer and freeze dried. No judgement. I just prefer what we do. :D

I use a new feed non GMO from Russell's my girl's haven't started laying again yet. I have started letting them out to free-range. Hopefully this helps because I have one that's laying and she is the one not in the coop. 😥

Thank you for sharing. Good advice! I grew up on a farm and learned, at an early age, the difference between pets and farm animals. Each has their purpose and should be humanely treated accordingly. Big difference between snuggling with a lap dog and with something I'm going put on the supper table in due time. Later in life we kept chickens, too. They free ranged & we closed the chicken house door after they went to roost. Wish I'd thought about your method of luring them in early. Especially in summer! As to what may be questionable to some, my viewpoint is Your Chickens - Your Choice as long as it isn't subject to animal abuse laws. Hope all is well in your part of Texas. Prayers lifted that you weren't affected by the storms. God Bless.

I get enough eggs to keep us in eggs and I have even had enough to sell/trade to a few people. Don't use a light. I'll just get an extra year or 2 out of them is all.

My chickens have a enclosed coop with 2 windows with screen no panes, i tried to let come out early but they hate the dark mornings. So now they get up at around 7:30 have to open the service door to wake them up, not even 1 yr old. I give mine collard, cabbage, mustard greens with dried Black Soldier flies on top every morning. Out of 16 hens i get avg about 14 eggs a day. I had up to 18 eggs in one day few times. BTW i have ISA Brown if any wanted to know, begin laying at 4 months.

When we use a light we have it come on at 7AM and only stay on till about 10AM it's funny it doesn't need to be on all day. Once they're up there up and they'll get out there and if there's any sign at all it'll be fine. That being said my hands are not producing quite as well as yours but I think my hands are really old and not producing because they're just past their prime time I actually only have four young hens but I can't bring myself to send the other 6 to freezer camp. So with 10 hands we get about six eggs a day in the winter and maybe 8 in the spring and summer.
