Huge fan of RME. I have two of their interfaces and have never looked back.

Would you say a Fireface UC would still be a good choice in 2024? My Scarlett 18i8 2nd gen is breaking down (random power outages and very noisy potis). Don't know how long it'll last but found a used UC for 550€. They were made in 2009. Pretty much on the fence of getting an RME that old, but I don't want to invest into the cheaper ones because my Scarlett is the second one breaking down since 2010.
@PurpleMusicProductions15 күн бұрын
@schpeidermann if it is the RME UCX ll that is a hell of a deal and would serve you well. That was my first introduction into RME and only sold it years later, because I wanted more I/I, hence the RME UFX II. The great thing about RME is they build their own drivers and support for extremely long times. Unlike other manufacturers who abandoned support within 6 months or a couple of years especially after a new product line has been released. Presonus burned me twice with that hence I will NEVER buy their products again. RMEs driver stability is unmatched in the industry. That UCX would be a major improvement over the Focusrite. Provided you do not have any hearing damage, but you will hear things that you could not previously and the material sent through it is so pristine, clear and articulate. The negative is it reveals everything, the good, bad and the should I retake this part again or leave it alone lol. With TotalMix you can use the DSP effects and record them to take the load off your cpu. Their mic pres are world class as well and have sort of very polish sheen on them.

I expand my interface capabilities through using a mixer with it - works great

Hi, special thanks for the idea with the digiface usb as a switching device. Did you set up three different snapshots on the digiface totalmix and get from there into the Fireface? If you want to do some short practise content - stuff like this would be great!
@AudioUniversity4 ай бұрын
Yes. I still only have 8 inputs to the Fireface UCX II, but the Digiface Dante snapshots make those routes for me.

Thank you for giving us the bottom line up front! You started the video by telling us exactly what the conclusion of your video is: you can likely expand your existing audio interface without buying a big ass interface. I’m interested in that, so I stayed.

Thank you. Cool info. Important reminder that your master output volume on your audio interface can only control output volume for the analog outputs that are built-in to the interface. Outputs added via light pipe can be used to route audio out of the interface, but the volume control of the audio interface can’t control them because they are not connected to the digital to analog converter (DAC) path of the interface. For example, when I moved from 5.1 surround into 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos I wanted to continue using my Apogee Quartet (which has 6 analog outs for 5.1). It would have been easy to simply connect an analog output device via lightpipe, but immersive audio requires that you have volume control over all channels, equally simultaneously and You don’t when adding output via lightpipe. The workaround is to buy a dedicated monitor controller that allows you to plug all 12 channels into it. But the cost of a monitor controller didn’t make sense when there are audio interfaces now that provide that capability internally.

The ADAT outputs in RME TotalMix have output faders that can be grouped.
@ProAudioIQ2 ай бұрын
Didn’t know RME could do that. Thank you! I was a sales engineer at Sweetwater from 2000-2005 and RME consistently had the most stable drivers back then and sounds like they are still doing great right now. I’ll need to take a second look at them for an upcoming upgrade because my Focusrite Red8Pre - although incredible in almost every way- has a fan on it. Really discouraging when my Studio otherwise is silent. Same with the symphony I/O from Apogee. I do absolutely love, though the RedNet and R1 I’m using also. But that’s all specifically because I’m running Atmos. I don’t actually need the R1 but it makes it so convenient because it is also loaded with a studio grade preamp on Dante and full headphone control and talkback, etc.. I didn’t think RME had anything being built for that category. I’ll have to take another look, but there’s another studio that I know would be a prime candidate for RME for what they are doing. Thanks for your video and reply. I’ll pass that RME information along as a result.

How would clocking multiple adat preamps on the rme digiface usb work when not having a wc out? Doesnt clocking over adat only work in the direction the signal flows, so in this setup the preamp would provide the clock, but what if I have multiple preamps what would be the master clock?
@AudioUniversity2 ай бұрын
You’re thinking about it correctly. In my case, I only have one device that only has ADAT out (RME 12 mic Dante). The other devices have ADAT in and out, so they all follow the 12 mic Dante through the Digiface USB.

It truly hurts my soul that 90% of this video was about ADAT and MADI. Audio over IP should have superseded them years ago, but because all the major companies have decided to build their own proprietary silos we’re left with an un-cohesive mess… Dante is amazing, but it’s absurdly expensive, and impossible to build your own devices that implement it…

My best trick for getting value for money is to buy used firewire interfaces, like liquid 56, and just buy a pci card for a few dollars. I don't know how they compare to new interfaces when it comes to latency and bitrate, but you get more inputs than you'll ever use for the same price as a new 2 input focusrite interface.. And you can buy a octopre for the same low amount of cash, and double your inputs.. I had to get rid of mine, as I was spending more time with cables and adat related stuff, and less time making music. Also, I will never need 16 (or was it 32?) inputs for anything

I to use a UCX II and I have the Cranborn 500adat using up my adat ports. So I was curious how I could expand my I/O. Ive been wondering if I could use a Digiface to do so and you just confirmed it. Id be curious to see how you use it as a switcher. Other ideas I had was asking Cranborn if two 500adats could be chained together and Ive also been looking at arturias new expanders but the conversion in those wouldn't be as high as the Cranborn or the RME. I also have my UCX connected to an ADI 2 Pro fs r through AES and the Adat ports on it are free but I don't think I can use them for anything in this situation, I wish that it was integrated to work with totalmix, that would solve a lot but in the mean time ill keep exploring my options. Thank you for the content and information.

Hi and,Thanks for all great videos, I recently bought a RME babyface Pro FS as the beginings of my home studio. Now I'm looking to expand it with an adat preamp for more I.O. I can't afford the RME Octa Mic II, but I can afford the Clarett Octopre +. Is there really a $1,200 differance quality? And is the steady clock that importent if the babyface is the master?

Is Latency a measurable issue when interfacing so many IO channels.
@electricwhiterabbit4 ай бұрын
I have been interested in a Digiface USB. Since you have one what is the latency that you get @ 64 buffer @ 48k with the converters that you use on it? Since you have a UCXII, what do you get for latency on that at eh same 64 buffer and 48k? Are you on Windows or Mac. I'm currently on Windows but am interested in moving to Mac if it is any better in regards to USB protocols compared to Windows.

Is there a way to synchronize laptop audio with an android phone camera? I was recommended using an interface, but I am skeptical... I tried connecting my phone to my laptop USB with no luck... Obviously, I'm not the techyist guy being a 77 yo songwriter who wants a better way to transfer the audio onto UTube than rerecording onto my phone using the onboard mic... Any advice would be appreciated...

New Subscriber here... I have question, I have a small home music studio for noodling around... I'm not into the hi-end pro-audio world, although I have ran live-sound at a church for a number of years. My question: What I am doing isn't working very well, I want to do voice over for my KZbin video, I'm got Pinnacle Studio 26 Ultra for the video editor, but their voice-over tool sucks! I have a AKG Mic mounted in a shock mount that uses phantom power, XLR connects to a Focusrite 2x2 (red box) to USB/windows. I'm only getting left channel, what I would want is dual mono, but can't figure it out. What I ended up doing, for now, is use Audacity and select Mono and that works, but then I have to do imports on the audio assets, what a pain to record all those clips and do that... Any suggestions?

you cant run a decent turntable into a Line input. The output of a magnetic cartidge (MM) is around 1 mV and needs a RIAA correction curve to work linear. Also the impedance is important together with the capacitance of the cables! U still need to learn a lot my Padavan!

I have been using adat to expand my interface for more line inputs and it amazes me how it work still. If anyone who works in the industry make a pure adat interface so we can split the signal between an audio interface and an extension audio input so we can just keep adding more.
