If you're a beginner, or a busy gardener looking for an easy way to add color and attract pollinators to your garden, zinnias are a great choice! You still have time to try them out this season.

What’s BT?

Bt ( Bacillus thuringiensis) is a beneficial bacteria that can be sprayed on plants to protect them from caterpillars. It works by introducing bacterial spores into the body of the insect larvae as it feeds on leaves. This quickly disrupts normal digestive functions of the pest. The infected larvae will die within 2-5 days. It targets caterpillars and is a great organic option.

I tried creeping zinnia this year with great success. I don't know if it's exactly the same zinnia family since it's latin name is different (Sanvitalia procumbens) but it is a fabulous ground cover, 4 - 6 inches high and 12 - 18 in wide. It handles the heat like a champ. We are very hot and dry like you are. Our highest temp this year was 119°. It has lots of flowers. Really nice looking!

Aside from the curve-billed thrashers cutting off our seedling Zinnias, we have been loving these flowers in the summer garden here in central AZ. Thanks for a great video.

One of my favorite flowers to grow in the desert is Tithonia also known as Mexican sunflowers. Love the orange flowers and they attract many insects. Also, they are very good at self sowing for the next year.

I love Mexican sunflowers, too. Mime haven't bloomed yet, but soon! And yes, great at self seeding. I have volunteers everywhere!
