i cant believe that after such a long hiatus, you still manage to publish exactly the kind of video i need for the exact thing im struggling with. Here's to getting back into the groove of things together

Sprints don’t work for me but I set a goal last April to write an hour a day. And it has really worked. I don’t put a word goal on it because I just want to be able to use that time on writing tasks whether it’s outlining, editing, or churning out prose. Sometimes I fall behind and have to catch up. But overall it’s added up to a ton of hours.
@peglamphier47456 ай бұрын
That's a good idea. I tell my students if you wrote one hour a day and got only a couple hundred words out if it, you'd still have a novel at the end of the year. Also, writing every day keeps the 'writing oil' warm.

I’m 15 and I’ve been struggling to write. One of the reasons is being discouraged and comparing myself to other authors. Your videos always seem to come straight the right time(it’s so creepy lol)

Remember to be as nice to yourself as you are to your friends. If you're kinder to yourself it'll get easier. And you'll get better and better.

I swear by music as well. Like you, I have playlists for individual books. I also have playlists for each character, and even playlists for romantic pairings within my series. I'm glad you're back. I missed your videos.

I totally agree with you Jenna, those writing sprints (when I could be there) were extremely helpful in motivating me to write. Tysm for hosting them! 💕

Getting an accountability partner really helped me. Knowing you have to report to someone what you did for the week and if you don't they will "go Texas" on you can keep you on task. I also have a "writing mix" that I play in the background to get me in the right space.

Perfect timing. Got my first chapter done for my book I've been lacking the motivation to write for a very long time. Jenna's got them mind reading powers once more! Great to have you back.

I knew it was there, but didn’t dare to look. My unfinished book, neglected and untouched for over a week. I felt it calling to me, reaching for me, like a friend half submerged in quicksand. I couldn’t bear to watch it sink away from me, so I stubbornly cast my eyes at something else. Anything else. Jenna’s channel popped into my feed. The title, ‘Get motivated to write,’ was printed right in my screen, almost mocking me. I knew it must be coincidence, but some things just don’t feel like the mundane randomness that makes up an ordinary day. This video wasn’t like the others. I scanned the page and saw it, plain and as day. A small bit of gray text more meaningful than any video title: ‘1hr ago.’ “How the fuck did you know?”

What really helps me as well is having playlists for different "type" of scenes or moods. Like having one for sad scenes or s3x scenes or action scenes. For those kinda playlist I go off vibe alone. If a song makes me sad it goes in the sad playlist etc. So if I struggel with motivation putting myself in the right "mindset" for the scene really helps.

Good tips, Jenna, as always. What works for me is to find something easy to start with. No need to start at the beginning-- those are hard. Also, NEVER stop where you're stuck. Stop when you know just what you're doing next-- then the next writing day you're not scared to start. Instead you're like, "I gotta get back and write that thing that I feel sure about." Once I get going I'm usually OK for a few hours, so starting is the key. That's me, but wanted to emulate your generosity and share.

I'd love advice for multi-hobbyists. My brain works in pictures, not words, so music motivates my art instead of my writing. I struggle to put movie-esque scenes from my head into language! My adoration for both mediums has been a constant battle. Feels like one must always suffer to benefit the other.

Thank you for this video. I think most of us on the line stream where looking for this type of thing. At first I started a manuscript that got to a first draft with limited work or being unemployed. Now full time job. I am trying to find the time for editing. I wish I could support you more financially though I have to do that for myself now. Began listening to your videos maybe a year or months ago they are informational and entertaining . Have a lot of them saved.

I’m so sorry things have been so difficult lately, but I’m so happy that you’ve gotten your groove back! Remember, no matter what your daily WC is, you can bet you’re writing laps around dudebros who’ve got “ideas” and are just “waiting for the muse to strike” 😉

This is something I've wound up losing and getting back at different times. But a few years ago, I looked at the words I'd written, and I found I didn't care anymore. Haven't written a creative word ever since.

Yessss I enjoy music so much when I write, it can be very inspiring but also like.. help you capture a certain vibe. Personally I make more moodbased playlists than project based playlist... that is to say, I do make project or character lists, but those are more for fun than the actual reading XD ( well for me anyway)

Finding something to read that inspires me to write has been holding me back about 3/4 of the way through my first draft. I started writing this because I couldn't find what I wanted to read and started writing it- basically a vampire conversion romance in which the vampire is actually dangerous and feeds on humans. If I wanted to write yet another Twilight, things would be easy. But I didn't want to write another Edward Cullen, I wanted poor Dracula/Barnabas Collins/Radu to have a happy ending. Why did I do this to myself? I'm stuck. 😭

Eee, I get to get back to my usual comment format! Woot. I AM sorry I wasn't on, like, any of the livestreams. They're totally inaccessible for visually impaired people. I love you, and NOTHING against you: just the format was sh*t for me. ANYWAY... 1. Setting timer for seventeen minutes and thirty seconds...because I am being VERY literal about this in the exact halfway point between 15 and 20 minutes, LOL. 2. This is what my bestie is for, thankfully. Buuuuuuuut, now that you're back, I'm back subbed here, too, so anyone who wants to talk shop, I write realistic fiction, which only SOUNDS boring, I promise. 3. YES. I've got a multi-POV book going, and each character has their own TYPE of music, though not necessarily their own artist. Adam has nerd rock, Vicky has classical, Stephen has "emo" stuff, Kayla has girl-punk-rock (think No Doubt), and Jeremy has Jeremy Dutcher, both my favourite artist and MY Jeremy's namesake. I met the guy back in December and I told him so. He gets a free copy of this MFer once I finish it. 4. Oh hell...my target audience is a little more amorphous than I would like. Realistic fiction with political and religious themes that is written in support of anti-Capitalist action, rhetoric, and ways of life. UMM, HELP? New adult, 100%, both because of my language and themes (i.e. child abuse, sexism, racism, homophobia, so forth), BUUUUUUUUUT...struggling a bit with that. I'd read it and I'm 33, but I'm aiming younger because "the youth" are the ones I'm going with, since they're the ones who will end up changing the world. 5. You mean like an outline? I'm going to be that pretentious b*tch for a sec and say that my outline is in my heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeead...? Which I know is probably a terrible idea. FIVE points, not TEN. Good job, Jenna. And no I'm not being sarcastic. For one, I'm just happy you're back and doing well, and for another, yes, do this stuff at your own pace, and the way you want to.

Hey, I am so glad your back! You have inspired me to write so much over the last year. I plan on releasing a book this year. My question: I have a gay male protagonist who has supernatural/romantic adventures. Am I singling out a vast audience do women read this kind of material? I enjoy a good female lead when I read is it the same for straight females? Open question for anyone really?
