Being a writer is a legitment struggle. I have always adored writing and have finally made my way about 20 000 words deep into a novel I'm writing. This is the furthest I've ever come when it comes to actually writing something long (I have commitment issues okay). And just at the most inconvenient time possible an idea for a new book, the sudden urge to start editing my current draft and the urge to just delete the whole thing all together have come in most chaotic unison.

Here's an idea, I recommend starting with short stories or like just short events with your characters in them. I typically come up with stories while I'm just doing whatever and I rush to my notebook to get the ideas down. When you have brainstormed enough, make an outline of what you want your story to look like and then write it. That way you will know how much you got done and how much you have left rather than spitting words out with no end and then quitting.

This is a story I’m working on: At certain times, fear stops us, and holds us back. Other times, it protects us, and keeps us from making stupid decisions. I thought my fear was holding me back, so I ignored it, just to fit in with my friends. Little did I know, that decision would nearly cost me my life. I survived the ordeal, but unfortunately, my friends didn’t. It all started one summer morning. My 3 friends and I would all be going to different colleges soon, so we had been hanging out with each other the past few months as often as we could. We wanted to make the most of the time we had left together. We didn’t when we’d be able to hang out together again once school started. There was only one week of vacation left, so I set up a group call with the three of them and asked how a couple days of camping in the woods sounded to them. They were all unsure of the idea, and truthfully, so was I. None of us had gone camping before. Still, I somehow convinced all of us, myself included, to give it a try. So, the plan was set. At 7:00 in the evening, we’d all gather into one car, bags packed, and drive around for a while until we could find a nice spot to set up camp. I had everything with me and was just about to head out the door, when the news my mom was watching in the living room caught my attention. “Charlie Peterson was found murdered at 9 in the morning yesterday in the South Woods forest, lying face down in the river, covered with blood. Police have yet to find the suspect but urge everyone to stay as far away from the forest as they can for their own safety.” South Woods Forest. That’s where we were planning to set up camp. “Sweetie,” my mom called. The urgency and worry in her voice was crystal clear. “I’m not going to stop you from sleeping over at your friend’s house this weekend, but get there as soon as you can, and lock the doors once you’re inside immediately. And stay inside. Keep me updated too, alright? I don’t want anything bad happening to you, do you hear me?” I nodded without a word and left. Yes, I lied to my mother. She always thought the forest was dangerous, and I knew she’d never allow me to go, so I told her I’d be staying over at my friend’s house for a couple nights. I felt bad about lying, but I wanted to have a bold and daring experience with my friends before we all split up. I drove over to my friend Victor's house, where the whole gang was waiting for me. “Alright, let’s get this party started!” Victor cheered. He was the party animal of our group, always up for anything and everything. “Last one in the car gets bad luck for a week!” Drake followed. He was always the Joker, could find a bright side to anything, and got along amazingly well with Victor. Brianna was next to go in. “If anyone happens to get hurt on this trip, let me know, I’ve got a first aid kit with me. It has bandaids, an epipen, gauze…” She was the mother of our group. Always cool, collected, and grounded. Finally, I got in, and we all set off. If you’re wondering who I was in the group, I couldn’t tell you. I’m still trying to figure that out myself. The more we drove into the forest, the more the pit of worry grew in my stomach. I decided to tell them what I saw on the news, but when I did, they all laughed. None of them believed me. “Come on Layne, we know you’re just trying to scare us,” Drake said. I pulled out my phone to show them the news article, but found I had no cell service. I sighed and sank in my seat. I had no choice but to go through with this, and pray nothing bad happened. The prayers in fact, did not help. We found a nice spot and started setting up camp. I tried to relax and enjoy myself, but my anxious thoughts were getting the better of me. I heard rustling noises left and right, swore I saw shadows lurking behind the trees, and heard my inner thoughts going “If you want to live, get out of this forest NOW.” But I didn’t listen. I told myself I was exaggerating. I was in fact, not exaggerating. We finished setting everything up, and the first thing we did was roast some hot dogs and marshmallows by the toasty fire. At this point I had started to ease up a little. We were fine. We were safe. We were together. Nothing could hurt us. The last thing we did to end our night was share some spooky stories by the fire, and boy was spooky right. It took me half an hour to fall asleep in my tent that night. But it didn’t matter. I was woken up a few hours later by Drake barging into my tent and shaking me by the shoulder. “Where the hell is Victor? Have you seen him?” There were many reasons I could not think straight at the moment. For one thing, Drake was never the kind of person to start freaking out like that, the only other time I remember him being this worried was when he borrowed his mom’s car without her knowing and accidentally dented it. Also, he woke me up at 5am. No one can act like a normal human being at 5am. Still, I gave him the only answer I had; that I hadn’t seen Victor since he went inside his tent to go to sleep. By this point, he had woken up Brianna too, and we both had to calm him down. Eventually he did, and we got a better idea on what was going on. Drake had apparently been woken up earlier by muffled noises coming from Victor’s tent. He called out to him and asked if he was okay, but there was no answer. Finally, the noises stopped, and the last thing Drake heard was footsteps walking around the campsite, passing by our tents, and then leaving after a minute. He then remembered what I had told him about the murder in the forest. That’s when he freaked. “Were you telling the truth about that murder?” he urgently asked me. Shook, I nodded my head yes. He then started cursing and muttering under his breath. This time, I had to be the one to shake him by the shoulders. “Get a grip on yourself! We’ll find him, I’m sure he’s fine. Maybe he went to go collect some firewood. Look, why don’t we wait here for 5 minutes, and if he’s not back by then, we’ll go looking for him, okay?” This seemed to calm him down momentarily, as he nodded quietly, and the three of us stood there in the forest, at 5 in the morning, waiting for our friend to return. 5 minutes passed however, but there was still no sign of him, so we took our flashlights, and headed out to look for him. We made sure to stick together closely, we didn’t need another member of our group getting split up from us Edit: I finished the story. Look at the replies to see it!

We made sure to stick together closely, we didn’t need another member of our group getting split up from us. We were all nearing by a river, and that made me nervous, as I remembered where Charlie’s body had been discovered just a couple days ago. I told Brianna to go check around the river, but it only took a few seconds for that decision to go horribly wrong. She let out the most horrified scream I had ever heard. Drake and I immediately rushed over to where she was. What I saw made my heart drop, and my stomach flip. He wasn’t covered in blood, but he was lying face down in the river, limp. We dragged him out, and without wasting a second, Brianna checked his wrist to see if she could feel a pulse. After a few seconds, she looked at both of us and shook her head. He was dead. We all just stood there; shocked, silent, heartbroken, horrified. We all understood what had happened to him. There was a red mark around his neck, clear as day. He had been choked. I knew none of us were feeling well in the slightest at the moment, but we had to get out of here before one of us was next. (One of us was in fact, next.) “Guys, we need to get as far away from here as possible and call the police. Let’s go pack everything up now.” They nodded, and we all walked away silently. I looked at his cold, dead body one last time. Knowing he was gone made me sick to my stomach. None of us ever should’ve come here. The worst thing was, this trip was my idea. It was my fault he was dead. I got out of my thoughts in time to catch up with my friends. I noticed something about both of them as they were packing. Brianna was going through everything slowly, her arms and legs were shaking, and I could tell she was holding back tears. I came over to her and gave her a warm hug. I knew nothing I said would console her at the moment, but I at least wanted her to know I was by her side. Drake on the other hand, was packing everything up fast, and even tossing things in the car, hard. I could tell he was angry. “Drake, I’m sor-” He whipped his head around and glared at me before I could finish my sentence. “You’re sorry? Yeah, I bet you are. You’re the reason he’s gone you know! If we hadn’t gone on this stupid camping trip, none of this would be happening right now! Victor wouldn't be lying dead in the dirt right now!” I sighed heavily, holding down the lump in my throat. “You’re right.” I replied, and continued packing. Arguing wouldn’t get us anywhere, and we had to leave fast. Drake went silent. Not long after, we all finished packing, and started driving. I had to take some deep breaths to ease myself. Victor might be dead, but we were driving out of the forest now. We were safe. There was no way the murderer was following us. My thoughts spoke way too soon.

@@natii111 Part two: We all jolted forward hard as a car hit us from behind. Then…we heard gunshots. This wasn’t happening. This. Was. Not. Happening. “Hold on tight guys, this thing’s about to go from 40 to 80.” Brianna warned us. The car was going so fast, I thought we were about to pull a Back To The Future and end up somewhere in the past. After all, anywhere would be better than here. We drove like that for less than a minute before a bullet popped our tire, and we ended up crashing into a tree. Drake and I were alright somehow, but Brianna bashed her head on the wheel and was unconscious. We both tried waking her up but it was no use. Drake started cursing again. “We have to get out and run as fast as we can,” I told him. “That’s your plan?!” “Do you have a better one?” He shook his head no. We got out of the car, but just as we were about to run, we heard a deep voice. “Well, well, well.” We turned to look at him, and sure enough, it was the guy who had killed Charlie, Victor, and maybe even Brianna. I wasn’t sure what condition she was in. “Looks like I only have one bullet left.” We were frozen in fear. “You two look like a cute couple, I’ll let one of you live” He cocked his gun. “So I’ll give you guys a five second head start.” I knew this was life or death. I grabbed Drake’s hand and we both ran as fast as we could. My heart was racing, my lungs were burning, my fear was overwhelming, and the gunshot- the gunshot left a ringing in my ears. I hoped, really, really hoped that he missed. But he didn’t. He shot Drake. In the back. He fell forward face first onto the pavement and almost pulled me down too. I stopped. I could immediately tell he was gone. The scene was too much for me to look at, so I turned to look behind me. He was a bit far, but I could’ve sworn I saw him smile before getting back into his car, and driving off into the forest. He didn’t bother trying to kill me. He just went back into the forest, to sit and wait for his next victim. At this point, I was not okay. In less than an hour I had seen Victor and Drake die, and Brianna fall unconscious. But I knew I had to keep going. I needed to get help. I ran until I had cell service, and dialed 911, but I didn’t bother staying. I told the operator all the necessary information I needed to give, then found my way home, and proceeded to cry myself to sleep. I didn’t look, or feel much better in the morning. I walked downstairs slowly, still unable to process everything. I saw my mother waiting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in her hand. She was surprised to see me. “Layne? I thought you’d still be at your friend’s house. When did you get here?” I didn’t even know where to begin telling her everything. She saw my face and poured me a cup of coffee. “Okay, what happened?” I sat down and told her the story. She was silent the whole time. Once I was finished, I was nearly shaking; from reliving that nightmare just a few hours ago all over again, and from the fear of not knowing how my mom would react. Surprisingly, she wasn’t as upset as I thought she would be. Sure, she wasn’t happy that I lied to her about where I was going, but for the most part, she was glad that I was okay. Physically at least. I decided it was best to seek out a therapist after that, and speak to them about what happened. I still have PTSD from the event, but therapy does help. I still go once a week. About my friends, Victor and Drake did in fact, pass away. But Brianna is in a coma. It’s been 5 months since the incident, and she hasn’t woken up. But if she does, I didn't think there would be enough words for me to tell her how sorry I am for everything that happened. I still blame myself for it. It was one of the last things Drake said to me too. I was the one that chose to go camping, and chose to continue our trip even after hearing the news. I was so stupid- so reckless. So afraid of our friend group falling apart. But in the end, that’s exactly what happened.

When I was in, seventh grade I think, I wrote up the first chapter of a story. It was about mafia and gangs because I was very into BSD at the time (ifykyk). I had been writing constantly, thinking about character relationships, ages, backstory, and not the plot at all. All that being said, I decided someone needed to read my masterpiece. That someone ended up being my english teacher. At recess I handed her nine freshly printed and stapled pages. Then she pointed out how I had used the word "giddy" to describe the reaction of one if the characters. When I chose that word I wish I was lying aboyt how much reasearch I did about it. And then I promotly decided the story was trash and what was I even doing with my life.

The best part abt being a writer is that essays in school are EASY to you, as you just research a topic instead of making your own plot line, and WAY less words!!

Would anyone here read a fantasy book series where the a human gets sucked into a magical world except she’s not the Mc. The mc can control plants and lives in the magical world with her bff bird boi. The world is later invaded by humans and all of the fantasy creatures fight together. Just curious if it sounds interesting!

Just in case anyone needs a reminder today: ‘Said’ is an invisible dialogue tag. Except in the most extreme cases, a reader doesn’t even notice ‘said.’ Words like ‘murmured,’ ‘yelled,’ or ‘postulated?’ Not invisible. Very, very noticeable. Obnoxious, even. And while we’re on the subject, ‘Ejaculated’ is not a dialogue tag, it’s a sex act.

you should write the scenes you’re thinking of and work them into the manuscript once you get there! i do that often, for one it keeps me from forgetting details/dialogue i think of, and it clears extra headspace to focus on the scenes i have to write at the beginning

Does anyone have any good writing prompts? I love writing but the only story I have so far is shared with a friend and I want to be independent and write my own story! I can usually never find good writing prompts to be honest, I’ve only written a fantasy story and a horrible alien story and I kinda wanna try sci-fi or something and get better at writing PROMPT STUFF: 1. Nothing not kid friendly- I can do death and stuff but no romance stuff, It’s not like I’m not ok with it it’s just that I’m bad at it and my parents might see 2. I don’t do death tournament stuff or horror 3. Sorry for there being so many guidelines but there’s one left, just an add on, I’m not good at writing about old / elderly people- in fact I suck at it PROMPT GUIDELINES OVER write your ideas!⬇️
