I put Pirelli P6 tires on my Ford Focus Electric when the original Michelin wore out near 35k miles. I rotated them every 6k miles and they wore perfectly. The Pirelli are a much quieter tire and range did not really change any noticeable amount. Now with over 30k on the Pirellies, they still look like they have a lot of life left in them with rotations every 10k miles. I am aware of the increased wear as when put down the peddle, the only noise I hear is the front tires ripping. So, I just drive very aggressively and the tires last far longer. I am hoping to get at least another 30k out of this $600 set of tires. My car only weighs about 400 lbs more than the gas version, so pretty close and load range is fine. I have zero complaints about this rather inexpensive set of tires.

"EVs can weigh a thousands pounds more". More than what? All the heaviest cars are ICE cars with big V8 or V12 engines. The reason you never heard of noise reduction material inside a tire before is because ICE cars are so noisy that you wouldn't notice the difference. Also EV range has improved so much that you don't have to worry about rolling resistance so much these days. If you want to eek out the most range then low rolling resistance works for EVs and ICE cars just the same. It's not an EV only issue.
@TronJockey10 күн бұрын
So true. The "average" weight of the vast majority of EV's on the road is roughly 4100 lbs. These represent the vast majority of EV's - Chevy Bolt 3600 lbs. - Nissan Leaf 3450-3800 lbs. - Kia e-Niro 3900 lbs. - Hyundai Kona 3700 lbs. - Tesla Model 3 3550-4000 lbs. - Tesla Model Y 4150-4400 lbs. Yes there a few heavier EV's (like the Tesla Model S and X, Lucid and Hummer) but they constitute a tiny minority of EV's on the road. Consider that most Hi-performance gasoline vehicles are over 4000 lbs. The Camaro ZL1 starts at 4000 lbs, the Mustang GT500 at 4225 lbs, the HellCat at 4500 lbs. and various Dodge Chargers at 4,232-4,586 lbs. Now consider the majority type of vehicle on the road. Combined there are over 50 million gasoline and diesel pickup trucks, SUV's and minivans ALL of which start around 4000 lbs. and usually weigh substantially more than the average EV (yet no issues with parking decks or tire wear) - Chevy Colorado up to 6000 - Ford Ranger up to 5325 - Full Size ICE Pickups up to 6500 - Full size ICE SUV's up to 5500 - Mid-size Minivans up to 4500 - Full Size Minivans up to 5000 - Ford F-250 up to 6800 - Ford F-350 up to 8000 - RAM 2500 up to 7300 - RAM 3500 up to 7500 Consider as well the 100's of thousands of delivery vans (9,000 to 12,000 lbs.) and Class 7 box trucks (26,000 to 33,000 lbs). Diesel semis at up to 80,000 lbs. I could easily go on here. Obviously EV's do not weigh 1000 pounds more than comparable gasoline cars (especially when matching Hp and Torque). On average it's more like 10-15%. And the accusations that an EV’s weight causes accelerated tire weight is nonsense as their mass answers to the same laws of physics that much heavier gasoline vehicles do and they don’t experience accelerated tire wear

All automotive tyres wear most under braking. Relatively little wear happens under acceleration, when at constant speed or even in bends unless the car is powerful and being driven aggressively. In general EV wear tyres more slowly than ICE vehicles because regenerative braking is very progressive and of course many EV’s are driven relatively gently to extend range. I have an Ioniq 5 with 55,000 miles on the clock. There is still maybe 10,000 miles left on the original tyres and this is a 300ps four wheel drive car weighing 2.2 tonnes. It is driven ‘briskly’, but more or less within speed limits and I rarely need to touch the brake pedal other than for full stops. I fondly remember my 993 Turbo 4 that destroyed a pair of P Zero rears in 3,000 miles and fronts every 6,000, but that had roughly the same 0-60 performance as the Ioniq 5.

0:32 EVs can weigh a 1,000 lbs more. Yea they can, but they usually don't. A Ford 150 Lightning weighs 1,000 lbs more than the equivalent gas version. But most cars do not. How about giving us the average, not the max. The average EV has about a 900lb battery (which includes structural components of the car), all new EVs that have skateboard designs use the battery case as the lower structural part of the car instead of doubling up on weight. Also, the electric drivetrain is much lighter than a conventional drivetrain, so the whole cars ends up being about 500lbs more on average or about 15%. A lot of times that's just the difference in model trim levels.
@adriaanvantulpenbaard17402 жыл бұрын
500lbs more for a low range model. If you need range you need bigger battery pack. Auto expert John Cadogan did a video about it that compared the same models of the same brands in combustion models and EV models which concluded that the weight of the electric car was higher by the weight of the battery pack. In other words if the battery pack was 850lbs then the electric version was also about 850lbs heavier. Also if the car is heavier the suspension parts needs to be heavier also to support the extra weight.

EVs vary just like conventional cars. A Chevy Volt isn't overly heavy nor fast. Any sedan tire will work fine. Sure, a low rolling resistance tire might add a bit of range, but it would also add 1 mpg or so to a typical sedan. More expensive tires are typically quieter as well and will make a difference in any car unsurprisingly. Also, any EV car will likely weigh similarly to an SUV, which the tires it uses will be designed to support.

THANK YOU for saying EVs don't have to have "electric car tires". I saw pre-mature wear problems when the first gen Prius came out in 2001 in the US. You had to get EXTRA LOAD tires for it. It could wear out standard load tires to the cords in 10K miles especially if you didn't rotate them. Tire companies came with with EV tires to make more money, that's the main reason. You just gotta know the tire specs which most people don't.

My Tesla Model Y weighs about 4300lbs, the car it replaced weighed 3700 empty fuel and my Toyota Tacoma weighs 3850. The Tesla is not that much heavier considering that the others will carry about 120 lbs of fuel. The real reason a Tesla will wear tires quickly is the temptation that one feels when the guy in the loud muscle car pulls up next to you at the stoplight which I have been guilty of.
@sambira3 ай бұрын
The weight is not that big of a deal. It is the torque that really gets the tires because no matter how gentle you push the accelerator, you're going to get that instant torque which will wear the tires more. I like the comment on tire cost in the future and I agree. If the big expense on your vehicle is just tires, they will raise the price.

How should I rotate my tires if the tires are different sizes in front and back? Also you should do a video on spare tires for an emergency as none of these cars come with a spare.

Rotate the rears left/right and fronts left/right.
@Momo_8k Жыл бұрын
And rotating them side to side ONLY WORKS if they’re not directional tires. If you see any writing on the side with the word “rotation” and an arrow symbol, your tires are directional and would only be rotated from front to back. Which you obviously cannot do since your tire sizes are staggered. As far as your spare tire comment - if you really need one, I would buy a single wheel and tire and keep it in your trunk. But if you’re good with tire monitoring yourself, you may never run into an instance where you absolutely need a spare tire.

Want to clarify that EVs are NOT that much heavier than their ICE vehicles counterparts. If you are not sure, search online for the weight of any EV and the weight of other vehicles that are similar in size and function. In my case, I used to lease the Lexus IS350 F-Soort all the time. I moved to owning a Tesla Model 3 Performance, and everybody said the Tesla will be extremely heavier. Not so, it is only about 180 lbs or so heavier which is just the weight of an average adult person. As for EV rated, it will depend of what type of EV you get so don't be obsessed about getting only EV rated tires. And finally, about the noise reduction foam inside: it is good for NOTHING. Many tests has been done and the difference in sound is barely noticeable as measured by electronic noise detection equipment. And worse, if you get a nail on your tire, most tire shops will not latch it if it has the foam which is stupid as they could take more a small section of it where the nail is, clean it as they always do before patching, and place a patch. It will not throw the wheel/tire out of balance in most cases. Solution: stay away from the foam. That is the first thing I did to my Tesla, I replaced the original wheels with aftermarket ones with tires that are EV and sports rated without the foam. Very happy with them 2 years later still. And one more thing, rotation... Do it only if the tires are the same all around, but if you have staggered wheels like the new Tesla Model 3 Performance, rotation cannot be done. Cheers.

On the topic of tire rotations, it's funny how Tesla used to recommend rotations at 10,000 to 12,000 miles, then later reduced it to 6,250 miles. It's like no one at Tesla knew enough about auto tires to realize they need rotating on any vehicle, to get the longest life out of them.

You dont need «ev tyres». All tyres come with a load rating. You need a good tyre that handles, stops quickly and remove water efficiently - with the correct load rating for whatever car you have.

I wonder if you might have added the regen braking wear on EV tyres - in an ICE car the braking is less as the car slows to lights and junctions. In an EV, especially with the highest level of regen selected, this slowing happens over a shorter distance, causing more wear. Great for the range, not so for the tread.
@andrewbell8837 Жыл бұрын
Regen braking wear on tires? How is braking less on an ICE car, it is wearing out the brakes and the effect of braking on either car would be the same.
@andyroid7339 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewbell8837 I don't think so. Regen is akin to braking hard to a stop compared to coasting to a stop. This is not simply the equation for stopping a mass from a certain velocity, it's the time taken/allowed, to stop. On an atomic level, I guess the way the friction breaks down the rubber compound - the heat created by the resistance, stripping off electrons. less heat = less breakdown of the compound. Maybe consider the situation in reverse - hard acceleration = hard wear (which is also a thing with EVs). The i-pedal mode in my EV6 is fairly harsh. There's no gliding to the lights on this setting.

1. Rolling resistance: Less is more efficient for any round object, bearings, tires, etc. - Just ask the railroad. 2. Grip: Varies with surface conditions, limits torque on tires on all vehicles. - A good driver adjusts for conditions, everything is not a race. 3. Tread Wear: Mostly controlled by driver. Drag Racers burn up a lot of tires. Most good tires have a tread wear warranty. By specifying certain types of tires EVs try to get better mileage and possibly range to compete. These tires would help any vehicle increase efficiency.

Suggest you might want to take an economics course. Car prices go up when financing goes down because demand goes up as more people can afford the payments. And yes you can expect EV tires to cost more because they cost more to make as you carefully detailed.

Dont fall for this new bs. Ev tires are stiffer and have less tread depth. The range savings and marginal improvement in nvh is not worth having to replace your tires more often. Go for cheap good performance, and long lasting tires
@thebrandonw27422 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I just run continental Extreme Contact DWS on my Model 3 Performance, and there's really no difference in noise level and I'm getting very good life out of the tires. They're barely below 50% treadwear now in 21k miles. The tires are supposed to last typically 45-50k miles so that's about on par with regular cars. I also have a lead foot and auto-X and launch it a lot for fun. EV special tires aren't needed. Maybe in the future they'll be waaaay better and worth it, but not right now they aren't.
