CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chili (John Travolta) goes to get his coat from coat check only to find that it's been taken by Ray Bones (Dennis Farina)... so he pays Bones a visit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A gangster is looking to get away from crooked deals and double-crossing people but ends up in the movie business anyway in this comic crime story. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami-based loan collector for the mob trying to collect a gambling debt. His assignment takes him to Hollywood to collect money from Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), a mildly sleazy producer of low-budget horror movies. Although Chili intends to hurt Harry if necessary, he takes a certain liking to him and an even keener interest in Karen (Rene Russo), Harry's girlfriend, whom Chili recognizes from Harry's grade-B monster epics. It seems Harry has a script that he feels is Academy Award material, and he could get the project off the ground if he could get the right actor for the lead -- say, the well-respected but egocentric (and diminutive) Martin Weir (Danny DeVito). Chili thinks he has a feel for the movie business and decides to see what he can do to persuade Weir to get behind the project. Chili soon finds himself hip deep in the film industry, which at least puts him in contact with a higher grade of scumbags than he's used to. But Chili isn't the only criminal Harry's been dealing with; he's been obtaining financing from Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo), a drug dealer with a highly uncertain temperament. An intelligently constructed crime story and a hilarious look at the absurdities of the film business, Get Shorty was based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard; Leonard based Chili on a real-life former gangster of his acquaintance, though Chili's model never worked in Hollywood.

@@commanderkeen3787It looks like they put the sound of a door opening in post production. The door is below the shot but if there was a door there you'd have seen the window on the door move. I doubt if Chili is complaining about it being too cold he'd be riding around with the window down.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie. It sets up Chili so well. It shows he's a man of action, not words. The other favorite scene of mine is right before he throws Bear down the stairs, he walks up them with so much confidence it's insane. Travolta deserved another Oscar nomination at the minimum.

I'd always thought that my Italian surname was fairly uncommon -- and then I see this character, played to a fare-thee-well by Dennis Farina, and I'm both astonished to see my unusual family name on any movie character, and glad that nobody of any sense would connect this Miami hothead with me. 😉

"He put on his black leather gloves going up the stairs to the third floor, knocked on the door three times, waited, pulling the right-hand glove on tight, and when Ray Bones opened the door Chili nailed him. One punch, not seeing any need to throw the left. He got his coat from a chair in the sitting room, looked at Ray Bones bent over holding his nose and mouth, blood all over his hands, his shirt, and walked out. Didn't say one word to him."
