Hey everyone! My assistant is back! Savy and I have a great series of videos coming at you for great reviews of our past videos Dating from 2006 showing you just how much we have polished that pearl! It is such a blast to do this with my girl, I cannot put into words just how proud of a Dad I am!
What is really great about what we do is that because we have covered the bases on how we function mentally and physically as humans when it comes to motor skills and we have this amazing solid foundation to spring up from, we don’t waste time fluttering about one contradictory theory to the next, we keep going deeper into the rabbit hole and polishing what works and what we believe in our gut and bones will work. We got this, and we will continue to work hard to make things easier for all of us to grasp and keep moving us forward.

I stumbled onto this video last weekend (looks like it was just posted a day or two before I found it) and it has changed my game dramatically. I was always using a common, more weaker grip and then wrestling with cupping my hand at the top of the backswing... and then dropping my arms to get into the slot... and so on. It has been mentally difficult to piece everything together consistently. I had someone I played with once say to me... "I can't figure out if you are an 8.. an 18.. or a 28. I watched this video and made notes and then went to the range Saturday and I couldn't believe how dramatic a simple grip change could be. My left hand (I'm a lefty) is on the left side of the grip with my knuckles pretty much pointing down. I take a nice backswing with a good back turn and swing down like his video says... like you are swinging a tennis racket or hammering, and I'm making great contact. My ball flights this weekend where much more consistent both length and accuracy. One of the byproducts of this swing setup is it keeps your left elbow (if you are lefty) down and your arm more connected. I think the grip change is the main reason, but also I'm benefitting from that arm naturally staying more connected. Played Saturday and Sunday and on both days, the shots were going straight and high. The sound of impact convinced me that my club face was getting excellent contact. It was drizzly and cold (gotta love golf in the pacific nw) when I played yesterday but I had a big smile on my face. Shawn... I can't begin to thank you for posting this video. Amazing to think I was one grip change away from playing much different golf.

That is me too. I am a lefty player too but do most things right handed. The coin drill really helped my contact now this has my alignment straight, shots flying at the flag, and best of all if I do turn too quick I have direct feedback with a big old draw down the right rough. Can't believe a super strong grip(right top of hand almost vertical up) gives this. Every lesson the coach has tried to get me to square the club via subtle things. This has me with a nice baby draw even with wedges into the green. No second guessing my shots anymore. Thanks to you and Savannah.

Went to get my shafts assessed the other day, so an iron fitting format. Pro sees me set up... He's a little put out. I say, "draw setup, lemme warm up". Says, "just hit it straight". Me: "there is no straight, just flavours of draw or fade." Bang, bang, bang. Draw, draw, draw. Says, "hit me a fade". Ok, fade, fade, fade. Some pure strikes in there, 7 iron carrying 170 yards for the draw, nice and relaxed. Says, "you don't need anything from me, off you go". 😂 Pure joy, thank you Shawn!

I have played baseball and softball and have always struggled with playing golf since I started playing 5 years ago. During that time I have taken lessons on a consistent basis through Golftec and other instructers. It just felt like a racket like this doesn’t feel natural. I have played baseball, softball and football throughout my life and what I am learning about the golf swing doesn’t feel right. Seen your videos and now I am killing that ball nice and straight most of the time. Just need to keep practicing. Thank you

Welcome back Savvy! Thanks for sharing your reality as I find in encouraging as I am having a similar situation. In terms of the strong grip and grip to face is where I am looking for help. Recently, I found that with the short game I am better with a more neutral grip. When I used a strong grip the club face is actually closed to much and the ball goes to the right. I think sometime my issue is alignment and not the grip. I would like to see a video that clarifies grip to club face and alignment.

From my observations I have seen people make the strong grip/weak hands, arms relationship. At the same time, I see players who have a dominant side, and for myself that would be the right side. Thus to prevent the right side from interfering with the downswing, a strong grip helps to facilitate this by allowing the right side to be more passive. I believe this helps players, especially those who don't play routinely as they would like.

I like what you said about starting with the club face closed, then take your grip and swing. I took a lesson with a company that taught me to try to hood the face/bow the wrist on the backswing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it's distracting because it's one more thing I have to think about while swinging the club.
@golflessons

THE SOUP OF THE DAY!!! Hank Haney was the first guy to tell people to now the lead wrist because most would have too open a club face. BUT BY THE SAME TOKEN HE ADVOCATED A NEUTRAL TO WEAK GRIP!!!??? RED FLAG!!!! The key is to be able to throw the club towards the direction you want the ball to start and have a GRIP CLUB RELATIONSHIP that does not need to be FARTED AROUND WITH DURING THE SWING which would be a major distraction from your task of delivering to the target with authority. Well over 70% of the grips on tour are STRONG TO VERY STRONG TO VERY VERY STRONG.

I implemented this "Strong, dynamic grip" and all of a sudden I was long and straight. the problem now is I am long and straight in the wrong direction. How do I fix this? Stance? Less grip change? Should I aim for the other fairway? lol

Hi Shawn, great video (per usual). I've been applying your methodologies and techniques to my swing and have seen great results. One problem I am running into is not finishing my swing or turning my wrists over and making contact when the face is open and pushing the ball far right. I think this is because I am too focused on cutting the dandelion stem and leading my hands through first. Is there a good drill to make sure this doesn't happen?

I’ve been playing golf reasonably well for 35 years. This toed-in position at address would mean that at impact the back of your left hand would have to be in a slightly upward position rather than directed at the target. I tried it with a few practice swings and, though the club face seems square, it’s the weirdest feeling. I completely get the concept, but I don’t think, after all this time, I’d dare hit a ball on the course this way.

Ken... I made this switch last weekend and my club face isn't closed. In fact, my irons have offset to them (as most game improvement irons do) so at address, there's nothing even remotely "closed" about my swing. I posted this before and I think it has some merit. One of the byproducts of having a strong grip is it makes it easier/more likely that your trail arm stays connected to your body. (no chicken wing) If you are right handed, extend your right arm out like you are shaking hands, and then turn your wrist counter clockwise until your hand assumes the same position it would with a weak or standard grip on the golf shaft. (able to see 1 or 2 knuckles) Notice how your right elbow subtly went from pointing down to pointing out just a little bit? Now, from that position, turn your right hand clockwise to how it would look with a strong grip. For me, my knuckles on that hand are pretty much pointing down to the ground. Notice what happens with your right elbow? It points down and your arm seems slightly more connected to your body. Where golfers lose power and accuracy (at least one of the ways) is when the arms become disconnected. (the chicken wing experience) Shawn is right... that grip is conducive for good (easier) ball contact, but I think that grip has at least one additional benefit related to staying connected.

I love your channel! I am curious... I have been practicing this entire Winter and making relatively consistent contact with all of my irons. About 2 days ago, I started hitting to the right portion of my net and it's happening on a lot of my swings now. I feel like, despite the consistent rotation and weight transfer, like it still happens way too much. I almost don't feel confident swinging the club because I feel like despite trying to keep my club face straight that it's either coming down too open or I'm hitting off of the hosel like a shank. What would cause this sudden "shank-like" condition? I almost want to quit because of it. I'm so frustrated.

I mean high enough to cause rain. I am still hitting the ball farther than before I changed to your method but have noticed playing into a good wind I come up short. Am I hitting the ball higher because I am coming into the ball at a steeper angle? Also is your daughter's ball position a result of her very strong grip. Thanks for the great videos. Kinda digging this. Seems like a a simpler way to square up with a shorter swing and managing timing as well. Question; your compressing the ball well but, how alive does the shaft feel when you swing? Like me I have days the shaft feels slightly too stiff but the ball goes good flushed, days the shaft feels alive, not necessarily flushed but shaft releasing through impact zone.
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 жыл бұрын
Nice awareness! In our premium channel, we have a nice 7 part series on the “kinetic chain” of the human body. The proper engagement of this kinetic chain depends on your focus in the last moment before you deliver the shot: What are you getting ready to do? 1-Hit the ball hard or 2-sling through the ball towards the direction you want to start the ball with a nice velocity and ease? See “throwing the club shawn clement” and see that little slow motion clip I have in there of throwing the club; make sure you are in a safe place and start with “head position and lag shawn clement” video to throw with one hand and then the full throwing the club video. There is also “throwing the club straight shawn clement” and you will see the need for that one big time! Then how to plug into the swing with ball? See “how to put the ball in the way of swing golf wrx shawn clement” and “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement”

Hey Joel! Some woods and drivers are more draw biased AND OR have a club face that has a bulge or twist face; and these clubs LOOK more open than the irons and people tend to close the face more with them; keep the grip but make the face look open! Shawn, I understand most of this but am really puzzled by the ball position. I've never seen anyone play the ball that far back for normal shots. Can you explain please? Thanks

I never took lessons from anyone. Naturally had a very strong grip. Never had any issues golfing. Tried a weak grip for a few months and I played ok but boy was it a lot more work to square the face. I really had to flip my wrists over just to get square. Timing was very difficult.

Great video. I currently close the club in my set up with a more neutral grip. If I went to a stronger grip it feels like I would need smaller sized grips. Is that normal, or have you heard that from another student?
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is normal! Try it on one of your clubs first, like a 7 iron and then see how you feel!

Is she playing the ball off her back foot or is it the camera angle? It looks well back of center.

We play the ball there when we want to draw the ball (for irons) it allows us to properly start the ball to the left of the target (for a lefty) so it can draw back to the target. Very effective!
@hardrockminer-50

What's the reasoning for trying to draw? I can see shaping a shot to go around a corner but, 90% of the shots, I want to go straight down the middle.
@golflessons
@golflessons 5 жыл бұрын
@@hardrockminer-50 that would be like playing ping pong with no spin-tennis with no spin-baseball with a checked swing. Trying to hit straight in golf is a form of sabotage both for the body and physics! Top shots in soccer, baseball, ping pong, all have wonderful spin!
@hardrockminer-50
@hardrockminer-50 5 жыл бұрын
@@golflessons it's the physics of the thing. Energy in its basic definition is Distance moved times Force applied to move it. A draw travels a longer path than a straight shot (shortest distance is a straight line). A duffer like me never knows how much draw is going to result. Since all clubs have a bit of loft, if I hit the ball square-on (with the ball and its intended flight path are tangent to the arc of the rotation around my body and the arc of the down swing) then the ball will have a back spin which gives it lift.

Shawn Clement thank you Shawn I love you videos and how you explane the process. I’m 63 yrs old 5’4” 160 and had a couple of back injuries. Can you help a senior golfer who maybe lacks in flexibility to still generate club head speed.

Only problem with her tennis shot for a “topspin “, was her racket face was open so the ball would go upwards have under spin not topspin

Went from 8 to 4 and leaving some on the table; with a few more reps this year on course (almost everyday) we will have that down to 1 with a few under par rounds; then 2021 the goal is +2 in competition. Then it will get interesting!!👍😀
