She was born in Madrid and her parents were from the countryside but grew up during the dictatorship, so the language was lost in my family. We're trying to get it back❤

There are some similarities with Korean grammar. Korean too has the same word order, Subject-object-verb. About from, to and in, Korean also put eseo(from), ro(to) and ane(in) at the end. Both Basque and Korean are isolated languages in the same continent (ie. connected by land), one in the west and the other in the east. Interesting!!!

Isolated lenguages are Basque in Spain and France, Korean in Korea, Ainu in Japan and Russia, Purépecha in Mexico, Burushaski in Pakistan, Mapudungun in Chile and Argentina, or ancient Sumerian in Mesopotamia.

I was born in basque country (iparralde) when i studied japanese ( language known to be close to korean) i realised that some basque words are close to japanese. Toki=Toko Txori=Tori . And of course the subject-object-verb order.

It's similar to khalkha-Mongolian "from" which is oos/aas/ees/öös, "to" is ru. Minii naiz ru "to my friend". Interesting.

I think one needs an extensive background in learning languages for this😅 Really enjoying the historic background though, thanks for that. Much love solidarity to the Basque country from Wales. Welsh was forbidden at schools up until my grandfather's generation, and the punishment was severe and humiliating for the children. Knowing that about my grandfather's childhood sometimes hurts me even to this day, so I can only imagine the pain that your beautiful, proud and brave people have lived through under a full blown fascist dictatorship. That little peice of your own grandfather's story and the survival story of your nation is deeply moving. There's definately something special about The Basque country.

Basque Country is the cradle of ancient warriors and knights. They are less likely to be immigrated by Portuguese and Mooro people, so they have light skin, red lips, high noses, deep eyes, and look more elegant than other autonomous regions of Spain. Especially, they are a people with a martial spirit and a princely spirit. Typically, A.Bilbao club never buys players originating outside the Basque country. Real Sosiedas as well as 1 opposing team in each Spanish city are royally sponsored vassals. The Basque Country and Basque people are so beautiful an lovely.

I don’t understand, “Ni Irati naiz” seems to break the transitive/intransitive rule. “Irati” is the direct object no? I am having trouble knowing how to tell when to use ergative case. Is it just a matter of memorizing? edit: OHhhhhhh Lightbulb! The mark the subject leaves on the verb enables this!

In France, it was forbidden for kids to speak Basque in schools for a long time so most people stopped using it, then people who wanted to keep it alive (wether they knew it or not) started creating basque schools (ikastola). Nowadays, these schools are expanding a lot, however, they are only private schools. In some public schools, you can get basque classes but it is quite rare and it is not enough to be fluent. The basque language has no official status in France, it is mainly used in basque schools, but as the students from the ikastolas are getting older, we can hope that they will directly teach their kids basque and that they will keep the language alive.

Thanks. I'm into languages. My language is agglutinative as well and it has the same word order too. It belongs to the Turkic family. Also, there are some words I've learned from your video, and those resemble the words in my language. Egun is kön (in other Turkic languages it's kün) in my language, and it has the same definition (day). Erdi resembles urta which means "middle/centre", yartï means "half".

Hay muchos "parentescos". Con el japones-koreano, armenio, dogon, innu, alguna tribu indigena de norteamerica que ahora mismo no me acuerdo. Nunca se ha sabido colocarlo ya que no se determina si es casualidad o hay relaciones. Esta claro que si esas relaciones son reales, se trata de contactos o movimientos migratorios muy antiguos, lo que lo hace mas complicado de determinar.

Europe has a long and strong (and awful) tradition of States implementing policies of language bans and eradication of languages for the sake of a more homogeneous society supporting the State. A history whose major champion is France (starting from the middle-ages kingdom of France war against Occitan language and going on in the revolutionary and contemporary ages). But such an example has been copied and followed by many States, throughout European history: the English Crown, Prussian Germany, Norway and Sweden (against Sami languages), Serbian monarchy, post-Unity Italy and Greece, Republican Turkey, inter-wars Czechoslovakia, fascist Italy and Nazi Germany... (and I could also speak about other cases in present-day Europe east of Poland, but I prefer to let them remain unsaid because present-day politics would raise a too much harsh debate up). So, if one considers how much politics, States and languages had always been mixed and how much they have been managed in an authoritarian way, throughout centuries of European history, there is no wonder if something like that happened also in the European country named Spain... Do not trust the European Union propaganda: Europe is NOT, has NEVER been the continent of liberty and of tolerance...

The form of Basque spoken 2000 years ago is not the same as the modern language, ancient Basque just developed into modern Basque, the same way Latin developed into Spanish. It's not any more "ancient" than any other languages, the special thing about it is only that it is an isolate, surrounded by unrelated languages.

Maximum of sympathy and support and admiration for the basques, their culture, their beautiful and precious language and for their strong identity. However, I have to remark that it is not correct to define Franco and his regime as "fascist" only because both were authoritarian. "Fascim" is not merely a synonimous of "authoritarianism". If it is true that italian fascism (the ONLY REAL "fascism" in a proper sense) has been (and all other historical forms of "fascisms" in a broader sense, which were NOT ALL the authoritarian regimes of XX century, have been) ALSO authoritarian, this is not sufficient to define it/them. Real fascism(s) was (were) also characterized by certain features like a certain degree of socialism (independently from the fact that during the years of alliance between italian fascism and italian crown they were put aside for reasons of search of the favour of the crown, the nobles, the rich, the army: they returned, they once more surfaced, during the years 1943-1945 of the fascist and officially called "Italian Social" Republic, and they remained in the post-World-War-II neo-fascist movements), and other features like the importance of the unique party and its military organizations, the push towards the absolute supremacy of the State even over religions, even over the Catholic church, and a certain degree of a return to heathen myths. None of this features were present in Franco and its regime, which cannot correctly be defined "fascist". Franco merely (and only tactically) make use of and abused the (truly) fascist movement of the "Falange Española" which had remained without a leadership after the murder of its leader Primo de Rivera, until he (Franco) managed to merge it with a totally different political subject like the "Comunión Tradicionalista" and to transform it into nothing more than a governmental office. Franco and his regime were not fascist: they were authoritarian and reactionary-traditionalist. It is a different thing. Moreover, if it is true that the Italian troops and Italian legionary air forces (but this latter mainly in air combats against republican Air Force, not so much in bombing) had been of great help to Franco's armies, it is NOT true that italians bombed Guenica/Gernika: the city was bombed ONLY by GERMAN aircrafts. And it is not fully certain that the bombing had been really requested by Francoist high command. I wrote the words above even if I was conscious that the video mainly concerns linguistics, not history, and I wrote them with no intent of diminishing the high value of basque culture, language and heritage, but only because some hints to history had been made which were not exact, in my opinion, and for the sake of historical accuracy. Apart from this, maximum of appreciation for the video and for basque culture, by me... Thanks for your attention.
