I love all your programs, but this one came close to my heart! I am 62 years old and grew up at a pine tree nursery that my father had started in 1952. My bedroom overlooked the nursery and all eight of us kids were basically free labor, and have grown to absolutely love Growing plants. A little known fact entered my life in 2020. My mother was dying in the hospital as she was 88 years old and her body was worn out. Due to all the stupid Covid restrictions I was the only one of the kids that could visit her even though four of my brothers are doctors and some were doctors in the hospital where she lay dying. I brought all the old family photographs and had her identify as much as she could and tell me stories about every photograph. It filled the hours and then she told me about her own mother and father who were born in the late 1800s. They had made a beautiful Dahlia garden in the woods. My mother said they had every variety known to man at that time, and they shared their love of dahlias with one another, and it was their passion. They had planted their dahlias from the tubers that they had collected from the prior year. Every year their harvest grew. My mother remembers how glorious the garden was in the spring and summer of 1952. My grandfather Henry grew very ill and passed away in the fall on Halloween night. My grandmother was heartbroken, and could no longer walk up the hill into the woods to look at their dahlias. My mother said she let them freeze and die as they brought her so many memories, but her heart was broken. I was always fond of raising dahlias, and have always been careful to collect every tube or at the end of the season and now that I know that this loving garden was created by my grandparents and sadly lost I take even more care to make sure that their beauty is preserved. 2020 was a very sad year, but it also was a very good year because I learned so many special things about my ancestors that only my mothers long hospitalization provided wonderful tales. Continued good luck to you and your family and all your endeavors to spread the great news that God’s living creatures … whether plant or animal is the best way we can nurture ourselves.

What a great show. I’ve never been interested in flowers, just veggies, functional foods. However, my husband wanted to do flowers so we squared off area for each of us. That was 18 years ago. Flowers came into the garden as marigolds for pest control and the color was nice. Along came Next Level Gardening and a whole new world of flowers with a function. I have flowers all over the garden now, mingling with the veggies. The one function of flowers, I hadn’t anticipated, was the joy flowers bring to my heart. I have grown dahlias ‘just out of curiosity’ and fell in love. I had no idea how huge the dahlia world is until your show today. Please do more on how to split the dahlia bulb and how to store for winter in my snow incased, 8” deep ground froze environment. Thank you for bringing me flowers and brightening my world.

I love to grow dahlias. They bring so many beneficial insects to the garden. Another option is to grow them from seeds. When doing this, you are not guaranteed what the flower will look like, so it is a fun surprise. If you like the flower, you can keep the tuber for next year and name the variety, which is really cool.

First time viewer this morning, I'm glad I found your channel. Last summer was my first yr growing one single petaled dahlia from a clearance area. I was blown away by that plants ability to kick out so many flowers. This will be my first spring of serious dahlia planting and Iam so excited to add that element to my roses and perennials. Totally going for and love the cottage look.

Last year was my first real garden, it was mostly a crazy large container garden, but I made sure to add lots of flowers for the bees, pollinators and hummingbirds. The hummingbirds were so prolific last year that they were buzzing at me constantly, they were not scared at all. I grew tons of marigolds and other flowers from the local nursery. This year I will plant about half flowers just to attract the pollinators and hummingbirds again. They made the garden so much fun and so lively!

I’ve never grown Dahlias. Never really attracted to them. Then I found a Fascination Dahlia, fell in love, & took it home. The local nursery only had that one plant left. The butterflies and bees loved it. It’s overwintered in the ground, and is returning. I think I’m hooked. I have ordered some more for this Spring. Thanks for the helpful video. I prefer the open centers, and the informal decorative.

I have found that the local wild turkeys eat them to the ground…lost all of mine last year. The neighborhood peacocks just eat the flowers or new green growth. I am relocating some this year and have thick netting around the front beds. Downstairs will be erecting poles with overhead/draping netting that is anchored. Erin from the Impatient Garden channel turned me on to dahlias. I picked up several from the floral department in a grocery store, cheap towards the end of summer. Wondered if I'd get any flowers and boy was I surprised. I have no recollection of their variety; I was more intrigued with their colours. They were WONDERFUL and gave me many flowers. Can't wait to see how they do this year, with a full growing season. In reading the comments regarding destructive slugs, I use beer traps to catch them, so I pray I'll have another successful season. Thanks Brian!

I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. Our winters are cold. I grow dahlias in my front yard instead of the lawn. One day before the first frost, I cut the flowers and bunch them into bouquets and give them away to neighbours and passers by. Then I dig out the tubers and store them in Yard Waste paper bags. I put in several, alternating layers of peat moss and tubers and keep the bags in the garage. In the spring, I divide some of the of the bigger clumps of tubers and share them with neighbours. I educate them how to care for them and remind them to dead head them twice a week. I love the ball dahlias. People stop to take photos of them. I caught one woman touching it to see if it's real or fake. They look so perfect. Most of my dahlias are from Costco. The bees love them. They actually sleep in them.

I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and grew dahlias for the first time last yr. I first planted them in native soil where they did nothing so then I moved them to grow bags with better soil. They did great after that and were beautiful, but to me, they were very fussy plants. We did have an especially dry hot summer last yr so I dug them up last fall and plan on planting them again this spring, but I haven’t bought any new varieties bc imo they’re too expensive for the amount of fuss they require here. If they seem less fussy this yr, then I might buy more varieties for next yr and spend the money. Until then, I’ll grow what I have and watch others from afar. Good luck with urs, Brian!

So I had to pause the video, because the one you got from HD looked just like the one I got this year (last week!) Turns out, it's the same company, but I got the "Bora Bora." I'm REALLY glad they are easy to grow, because I'm notorious for being able to kill almost anything. The first plant I was ever able to grow was a rubber tree plant, and that's because I kept forgetting to water it, and only watered it about once every three weeks. It LOVED it. When I moved in with my husband and his parents, his mother was *great* with plants, and watered it twice a week, after which it promptly died. Wasn't able to grow Aloe or other cacti, because my cat would eat them (!) needles and all!! I'm going to have to grow the Dahlias in containers though, and I hope mine are big enough based on your newer video, because not only do I live in NW Arizona and I want to be able to move them if they're getting too dry or hot, but also because I rent, and if I put that much work into them and they DON'T die, they're going with me! LOL Thank you SO much for your videos, you've been my favorite content creator for gardening, even though I only recently found you. I love your voice, your style, your humor and your *honesty.* Haters gonna hate my friend, and no amount of being nice, or evidence, or being rational with them is going to make a whit of difference. I taught my kids a saying: "Never try and teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig." Thank you for being you and sharing your love of plants with us, and actually SHARING the love of plants with us, it's infectious.

Planted my first dahlia two years ago, received from a friend who bought a package of dahlias from Costco. She had an extra and gave it to me. Had no idea of size, etc., so it ended up being two big for the spot it was in. I moved it the following year, and it became the star of my front garden. People ask me what it is all the time, and comment in its beauty. No care from me, except for staking. I don’t have to take it in for the winter, here in Virginia. It is called Explosion, and that’s what it is. Vivid orange and yellow flower, pretty tall, about five to six feet, and a prolific bloomer. This year, because of my experience with that dahlia, I have purchased six more tubers, all different, but in a similar color scheme. I am very hopeful they will be as successful as Explosion.

Hi Brian, to make the plant fuller and branchier, it is enough to cut/pinch the growing end of the stem, unless you want to make new cuttings, then you really cut a stem with 2-4 pairs of leaves, but then do it with scissors or sharp scissors to Do not cause damage to the mother plant or the cutting.

But those giants dahlias tubers did not do well the following year and eventually gone. After seeing your video on dahlias, I am excited to try them again. Just bought a package of 12 tubers from Costco in the orange, yellow, red colors. Can’t wait to have them in my yard so beneficial pollinators can visit my garden and help pollinate my veggies. Your on-end cut logs lining your cottage garden and walkways has inspired me. We have logs we asked the tree guys to leave us from limb cleanup from a bad ice storm (neighbor asked for firewood but some pieces are too long or big for me since I don't split firewood and my neighbor might wait until who knows when to come pick up their share!). So I just realized I can load up my wheel barrow with those big or long pieces to use decoratively or as borders and that huge pile of firewood won't be so huge. We had it dumped on a lot we don't own so getting it off there is a needed thing soon! Note to self: no more free stuff unless they can dump it exactly where I need it! And of course, they shredded up tree limbs into mulch so those have to go too. Someday I will learn. Meanwhile, I am a busy person moving mulch and hoping my neighbor come to get their share of it. I have to contact the property owner (of the lot next door) so they come out and get the tree limbs on their lot cleaned up or eventually the downed huge tree limbs will be a fire hazard. Yes, the ice storm was that bad!! Our summers are dry and hot, so we have to keep wood cleaned up. These crazy seasons are hard on trees and we have a bunch of trees and they are tall ones. Mine are trimmed, but on either side of me, nope. So anything overhanging my property will be cut. I no longer feel sentimental about trees. When those big limbs literally exploded from the weight of the ice, it was really scary! I heard explosions and crashes all over my neighborhood. And the electricity was already out. So ...yes, back to normal now.

Love Dahlias! I grow lots. This is the first year I have dug them up and stored them. I am zone 9 and I don't need to do that they overwinter fine but I wanted to move it to another area.

I bought some Dahlia seed this year. Mainly to add to my growing list of flowers to attract pollinators. I will likely be happy with whatever I get, half the fun of gardening is seeing the results.

I admit, while my yard is still covered in many feet of snow, it's hard not be envious of the visible dirt. On the other hand, it's an inspiration and source of hope.

I LOVE dahlias! I chuckle when you say they are easy to grow. Going into my 4th year of growing dahlias I am still struggling to master the art! Between really bad soil (tried to amend, going to raised beds this year), slugs and aphids and all other manner of pests, powdery mildew and lots of damp weather, I keep the faith and vow to do better the next year.

I ordered 6 Dahlias this past fall. I cannot wait to get them! I was bummed when I saw the Dahlia tubers at Costco two weeks ago for a fraction of what I paid for 6. Here's to the start of my Dahlia adventure!

I have grown Dahlias in the past. My only problem has been in dividing the tubers. I find it very difficult to do without destroying the eye. Can’t wait for a video that deals with how to do it.

Mother got some giant dahlia bulbs from a 50+ long-time friend. Instant love for dahlias. 6 ft stalks with sunflower head flowers. Forever dahlias !!! Plant dahlias intermixed with giant sunflower heads - for pollination by bees/flies for both species.

The ones Costco carry in the packages are usually from Longwood Gardens and are VERY reputable! I have also purchased the already flowering plants in nursery containers that the sometimes have in the summer that have grown well.

Dahlias! always a favorite topic. Couldn't find the variety on the Colorado Dahlia Society's suppliers list. It was a listed variety though. The list has been an amazing resource over the years but when I was there tonight numerous links are not being generated correctly. It could be that the site's management is in decline, after all we all get older and hope that someone will continue our legacy but it doesn't always work out that way. I don't remember the gentleman's name I am reasonably sure that he was the founder of the site's Big List in the 90's but he was very enthusiastic and dedicated to the task. The list has grown in both quantity and quality since I used to refer to it.

Bryan where did you get those "leetle" "shallot-sized" tubers ?! The giant tubers we got from our friend were the best giant dahlias. If you want to go for the gold - then you need the golden boys - big tubers. And in the PNW, we do dig up the tubers over-wintering them in wood chips and sand for Spring replanting. If you want tulips, daffodils, iris, hosta, and other ground hugger plants - then go for the small tubers. Otherwise, get the sweet potato/yam-sized tubers and grow the big boys, intermixed with the giant sunflowers and giant amaranth (seed heads) for a whole lotta flowers - and tweeties and bees pollenating them all. The only dahlias are the decorative pan-sized and bigger flower heads !!!

Using decorative dahlias, like corn stalks, giant amaranth or giant sunflowers, you can plant your beans and peas near them, and they provide the same corn-squash-bean configuration for shade cover squash, height (and leaf shadings), and pole climbing vegs. Put in poles with multi-story (low-story and high-story) bird houses provides maximum bug controls. Low-story houses gain sparrows, finches, and bluebirds, ... while the high-story have the swallows and purple martin swallows. Each controls their area of airborne insects or ground weed seeds and bugs Having a total complex of birds, bees, butterflies, bumblebees, and native bees all doing their job of keeping the neighborhood clean and tidy (and pollenated) makes for the most prolific of flowers, vegs, herbs, and greenery. You make their :forest" flower, veg, harb, and housing canopies - and they WILL COME !!!

Brian, check out Nicole at Flower hill farm NY. She may be able to direct you where to locate formby perfection. She just did a video about Coseytown flowers and a dahlia producer. Great resources as flower farmers! 🌼 To bring inside with lifting proper storage is key. Store in vermiculite slightly damp to prevent drying out. Check on them so they don't rot & dry out. Learned that lesson the hard way. Why propagate? You can split the tuber save extra work. Check out flower farmers or Laura at garden Answer. It's way easier than propagation. Dig up, store then split tubers again.
