This is my first year growing flowers in my garden. Videos like these have been essential. I have watched this video 4-5 times.😂 I had a successful Dahlia year. I'd love to have more videos like this one. An in-depth care and planting video of one flower type at a time is indispensable to a new gardener, like me.

I just discovered you today and subscribed your channel! I am a newbie growing Dahlias. I was voted 4 tubers. I didn’t store them very well. There were two that looked viable. I planted then in individual it’s. I didn’t it them on side ways. I’ll go change them, if it’s not too late. I planted 5 days ago. Please wish me the best!! SO SO helpful! I moved to Colorado in March and started growing Dahlias in my window boxes. I wish I would have came across this video sooner because the instructions that came with them was so poor I ended up with half rotten tubers. :( Two grew into leafy bushes and never bloomed. It's now late September and I planted in early June. I thought, maybe the soil had too much nitrogen so I added a low N and higher Phosphorous fertilizer and nothing changed. I don't know what went wrong. I think I'll try your pine shavings and rubber maid storage and curing for winter tips. Thanks so much!!

I live in zone 9b and I'm currently trying dahlias for the first time. I'm just wanting them as cut flowers for me and garden interest. I actually decided to plant them in three gallon pots just so I can move them around a bit and see where they will be happiest in my garden. And also be able to bring them in if we have hurricanes over the summers. I'm excited to try this flower I've been intimidated by in the past. Just now learning it's probably a good idea to container garden them to know if they have any diseases and incase they had pesticides being used on them I'm not getting it into my soil!!! Thank you for sharing the things nobody else was saying!!!!

Just a note from a laidback gardener, I store my dahlias in an unheated basement. I live in Maryland and place them (clean of course) in a resealable plastic bag (reusable too). I make sure they’re full of air and seal them up. Then place in a seedling tray, side by side like a display. They sit in the basement in the dark for the entire winter. I do check every 2-3 months just to make sure they are good. I only lost one last/this year storing them this way. So it’s pretty easy for smallish amounts.

I recently bought one of those big bags of “soil” (my husband calls them bags of soil, lol!), from the big box stores, and out of ten dahlia tubers, only 2 were viable!! Most of the tubers had broken off by the time I got to them, and they all just looked weak in general. It’s my first time doing Dahlia’s so I guess there are lessons to be learned as always with gardening

Ooooh - you overwintered your dahlias in the ground this year here on the Front Range? I'm excited to see your results! Last year (2021) one of the community gardeners did so in his 16" raised bed by accident, with success. This makes me think I could fill what will be my 4' x 12' dahlia bed 6-7" below the top to leave room for plenty of mulch for the winter. I may also insulate the that metal bed on the north & west sides. Hmmm... Storing tubers overwinter is a bit of a struggle here - I stored mine as clumps in vermiculite in bins for my first storage experiment this winter. I should pull out one of the bins out today to see how they look. You are a bad bad influence on me re: soil blockers 😉😉 One of my friends up here said I 'can come visit her blockers next year', so my questions for the day is where to get the trays? I'm keeping an eye out for your newsletter. Red

Learnt so much here, in particular about neonics. I did google it as I was one of those who bought the big bag of dahlias at Costco. Still digging into to confirm the brand I bought but it seems many of these big box retailers have put policies in place specifically against selling neonic supplies a year or two ago so hopefully a sign that things are changing for the better. Of course I will check now before I buy anything else. Thx for raising awareness of this.

Really informative video, thank you. I'm a novice dahlia grower in the UK. My grandad always grew them but I only really started last year. I let mine get frosted - they were in pots - but when I went to dig them up every single tuber was rotten. I was so disappointed, not least because I'd received a couple that were mislabelled but the flowers were nicer than the ones I'd ordered and I didn't/don't know what they were. I'm trying again this year but with fewer plants. Hopefully I'll move house in the next year or two, and perhaps have a garage, then I can have more. I can't wait.

So thankful to have a fellow Coloradan dahlia gardener for help! My question is how much of your soil do you get rid of if you discover one of your tubers has gall? I have heard to get rid of it all but most of us can't afford to loose that much and I have been finding at least one every year in our raised beds.

New subscriber here!!!! Thank you so much for this video, Very informative! I fabled in dahlias last year from a big box store, and I was Hooked! Unfortunately I found gall on all of those tubers when I dug them. I’ll never buy another tuber from Lowes or Home Depot again. I also had one from Eden brothers with gall so I’ll never order from them either. I have ordered about 35 over the winter and very excited to get them in. All from small growers and Swan island dahlias. I did purchase some seed also to sprinkle in other areas of my yard.

Yep definitely liked and subscribed! So much important information you just shared. THANK YOU! SOOOOO Glad I found you! In in PA and I've kept my tubers in the ground and they come up every year. We get snow here too; so I cover them with leaf mulch. Works wonder! Thanks again!

Thank you! I adore your teaching method. I'm walking away feeling fully informed and ready to plant my first tubers and transplant my first seedlings. You briefly touched on starting from seed, but do I transplant them like anything else, at the soil level they've grown at, or should they be buried 2" deep?

very interesting! I have been storing mine for years in cardboard boxes with newspaper between in the far back corner of the basement - thus I tend to forget them and they often have tall shoots already when I bring them out 😐
