Get the best experience out of The C64 Maxi.

In this video I show how to get the best nostalgia kick out of TheC64 from Retro Games LTD. I have connected it up to the mighty CRT from Commodore known as 1084S. This is the cheapest plug and play solution for anyone not interested in maintaining the old hardware of a real Commodore 64.

That is how most of my nostalgia hits as well tbh. I chase it, but it also leaves me a bit of sadness about how little I like the current time. On another side, the current time is what makes me be able to enjoy everything I longed for as a youth and young adult. So I must admit it is a mixed bag.

Changing the sticker is a very good suggestion! Using a Commodore monitor makes it complete. I'd love to use mine with a 1701/1702 Commodore moniutor - but one of these is still on my bucket list of things I want to get someday. I prefer the Ultimate64 or the MiSTer FPGA but do own a C64Maxi - it's basically the Vice emulator in a nice C64 like case. :)

It's been out for a few years now. I wish they'd release a v2 with a more powerful SBC and an up to date version of VICE, also a way to swap SID to 8580, and all the VICE pallets. I really prefer emulation of games through my PC but playing with Basic and going through those old manuals I really need the keyboard layout and PETSCII labels.

A pc is much much better indeed. But it doesnt tick my nostalgia. I guess it would differ if I had any nostalgia for the games.

can the game go full screen in 4:3? I see a thick border in the game. sadly I am a fullscreen guy. lol

I will have a try in vice. most games don't use the borders though. easy to spot in vice.

That's the C64! It HAS to deliver fat borders to drown you in lavender purple. Especially on PAL, where 200 lines only occupy about 65% of the screen height of 312 lines.

This is weird. C64 clone to hdmi to composite. I was expecting the HDMI converter to cost more, but still, a real breadbin is way cheaper.

Avsolutely. And nothing beats it. But getting harder and harder to get fully working c64s. I need to be using fpga for it currently myself as I don't have a working sidchip atm. This video was ment only as a how to get the most nostalgia feeling if you have one oh "The C64". Not an endorcement! Cheers. Thanx for your comment.

Bro, I don't see too much sense in buying an emulator and connecting it to the original Commodore monitor :)

I guess not everyone gets anything from the look and feel to get back into it. But I do. Running an emulator on a modern keyboard with a widescreen lcd monitor does not do it for me. It does the job if all I am interested in is the software, but sometimes I am chasing the nostalgia feel. Thanx for watching :)

@@proteque Yes I rather meant that if I had a Commodore monitor I would buy an original C64, getting the authentic look & feel, without the need for additional HDMI adapters.

It would make sense if it was HDMI to RGB scart, as the original C64 outputs pure vomit over the video port, even its chroma/luma signal is unacceptable low quality with chromableed, jailbars and micro-checkerboard patterns.

A C64 needs a Suzo Turbo the Arcade stick..... Made in Holland. Also microswitches, but way cooler looking.
