Get an old CD case, Stick a WD 40 Cap to it, hold it on your panel until the shadow of the white cap is equal all around, you have just aligned your panel in perfect alignment with the sun. I do that 4 times a day to get the max efficiency from the panel , 10 am, Solar Noon, 3 pm and 5 pm, in the summer months you will pick up 25% more efficiency, cheaper than a solar tracker.

To adjust the angle, set a soda can (or similar shape object) on the panel and hold it in place while you tilt the panel until the shadow of the can disappears under the can. Now the sun is directly perpendicular to the panel for optimum power. Remove the can and enjoy your beverage.

I don't think the location of the $20 aiming tool (at the top of the panel versus the center) matters as long as the panel is a geometric plane (flat). If, you were placing the tool on a flexible panel, then placing it in the middle of the panel would tend to be the best location to get the best [average] angle since the top would be less-than-optimal, while the bottom of the panel would also be less-than-opimal in the other direction. I also heard that you can hold a cylindrical shaped can, such as a soup can or a Pringles Potato Chip can up against the panel to adjust the panel angle so that the cylinder's shadow is equal around all sides of its circumference. One note of caution though, if you use the $20 tool clipped to a metal wire (i.e., a coat hanger), be sure that the tool is perpendicular to the panel since the tool's clip could introduce a few degrees of error. Great video!

A small piece of plywood (3x3) with a wood dowel 3" x 1/4 wide inserted in a hole at a 90 degree angle will do pretty good too for probably close to zero cost. The idea is to zero out the shadow. No coat hanger required. Also remember once set the angle would have to be constantly reset to continue to optimize the angle of the moving sun. (yeah, I know, it's actually the Earth moving)

I just picked up a Delta Pro and will be getting 2 - 400w panels. The reviews for the 400w panels seem to indicate that the carrying case that designed to prop up the panels at an angle does not do all that good of a job of keeping the panels flat (i.e., the outer two of the 4-sections sag a bit). I have seen videos of owners adding a 1x4 piece of wood across the top of the panel to give it more rigidity, but I think a piece of aluminum angle iron would be much lighter than wood (you still need to drill your properly-spaced holes regardless of whether you use wood or aluminum angle iron). Just my thoughts. Also, if anyone comes across a third-party or DIY panel prop-up mechanism made of lightweight aluminum angle-iron, please post the source here. I think some may be using an "easel" type of prop, but whatever works. I kinda sorta hesitate to use the 400w panel carrying case as the prop because it seems like the weight of the panel may tend to dis-configure the shape of the carrying case so that the panels no longer fit easily into it for storage. In other words, let the carrying case do what it was designed best to do, and acquire a dedicated prop for the panels, knowing that you can always use the carrying case as your prop in those situations where you are on the move.
@Tommyr

Or for free you can take a spray can lid or a similar lid, hold it flat against the panel and move the panel until the lid's shadow is gone. Same accuracy for zero cost.

Nice video. It also proves one of my points on why not to buy portable panels. You cannot get all the sections on the same plane unless you build a backboard for it. I got a free 60 watt on prime day. I am curious how long this type of panel will last before delamination. Only took my others 5-6 years. Dont buy portable panels folks. Look into delamination and ask yourself why the such short warranty on portables vs rigid panels.

I move & angle my solar panel until it's casting the smallest shadow on all 4 sides. How much did spend on extension cords, wire for the extension MC4 connectors, MC4 connectors, special crimping tool for the MC4 connectors, wire stripping tool, + the price of all those panels that will delaminate in 5-6 years & then need to be thrown away. All that time a person has to devote is an additional cost of so-called "FREE" sun power. Let's not forget the panels can simply be blown over by a gust of wind. A Honda Generator is the way to go for power, anywhere, anytime. Warm Regards ffrom Reno, Nevada
