Just to get ahead of the comments: Yes, I lick my brush a lot. I've been doing it for years as a habit. You'll notice that approximately 30%-40% I'm doing it to a brush that has no paint in it at all. So, why do I do it? 1. It sharpens the tip of my brush. 2. it clears the paint out of the brush. 3. it's immediately accessible because it's very close to my miniature because I paint with the mini right next to my face. Acrylic paint dries very fast so when I wetblend/feather I can immediately get back to work w/minimal time in between brush clearing. 4. Sometime's it's just a random habit, there's no reason why I'm doing it.

Just got back into painting D&D minis after 34 years. My sons are playing D&D w/ me DMing the sessions. I can't play D&D w/o minis, I could but I choose not to. I had a large collection which I gave to my brother when we moved to an area that had zero RP gamers. I got tired of playing sessions by myself and letting the dice determine whether I failed or not. I was an okay painter, advanced for the time I guess. I am blown away by how the hobby has advanced due to the info on the net. I have learned a ton and gotten back up to speed faster than I expected due to channels such as yours. Thanks for the awesome advice and help. Your work is gorgeous and has helped get me going faster than I would have.

Your tutorials always go above and beyond, but i gotta say: this video really is something special. We can really see what a high-caliber painter goes through, step by step, to achieve those amazing results. It is a window into your process, the likes of which I personally had not seen before. Just amazing, and really spectacular production values. P.S. I have now seen both you and Sam Lenz use the brush-licking "technique". I don't know if I ever commented on this vid before, but... THANK YOU!!!!! I started watching your vids probably in June or July as you were one of the first I discovered when I searched KZbin for mini painting vids. I was wanting to do some mini painting with some amount of technique in mind after many years of not touching paint at all. I got one mini more or less done just as a warm up, then started on my major project which basically stalled after laying down the 2 base colors. I'm planning on getting back to it now that I've taken the time to search again and refreshed my knowledge of how to blend. I'll wait until I have an entire weekend to devote to it. Again, thanks!!!!

Painting-wise I think it's your best video :) It illustrates a very important lesson: a lot of people expect that a single technique is a silver bullet, and it turns out you have to combine different things & do a lot of back and forth to get great results. to all of those who complain about the paint licking part... this dude has broken painting down into some insane levels of science, explaining why they work the way they do, pigment details, etc. he has taken mini painting to levels we can only hope to learn from and copy along. i myself haven't licked my brush much as it never crossed my mind as the greatest idea i have ever had, but i also mix with thinners more than water also and that is DEFINITELY not good for you. that being said if miniac licks his brushes, and you call him dumb... you have no idea who this man is or what this channel is all about. i honestly believe scott will likely be buried in his painting apron with small streaks of color still fresh on his lips, and he wouldn't mind that a bit. he's not saying to do it, he is simply showing you how he does it. if you don't like that step, skip it. there are plenty of reasons not to, and a few pretty *arguably* good reasons to do it. either way can we just take a moment to go HOLY SHIT THAT IS SOME CREAMY BLENDING.

I can't say I've ever tried, but If I tried to wash something with one of my old citadel inks or my Dahler and Rowney inks, it would be way too overpowering. I'm not sure if this is the case for VGC inks or not. Either way, you can use "washes" for glazing as well, no rules here.

Scott I just want to say thank you for all of the tutorials and time you put in to help us get better as painters. Now for the overshare... I've dabbled in miniature painting for years, always flitting in and out of the hobby before I got any better at painting and then have to start over years later. My life is super stressful at the moment with work and family and I have so much trouble focusing whilst on my medication and giving 100% to anything, I quit before I get close to my goals and move on to something else, it frustrates the hell out of me. But watching your videos, you've inspired me to try again, try be the old me - get better at something, get good at it. I hope applying it to a relatively narrow scope such as painting (I realise it has a super high skill ceiling) that I can then apply that to my career effectively and it'll become part of my life, il be closer to the person I used to be. I don't want my children to grow up thinking I am someone who can't apply themselves, never finish a task, or reach a goal - and it scares me that I could pass on that trait. I couldn't find a private message function, but I don't care - I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels this way and maybe they need to see it too. Anyways, this is a big thanks. You are inadvertently helping me change my life with babysteps. Keep making those videos mate, and il try to paint more mini's.

Love your videos! I appreciate the work you put into the video editing. I laughed out loud at your run-on sentence; and showing every glorious paintbrush-lick was an impressive level of attention to detail. Keep up the great work!

Scott, I wanted to thank you for your last video in which your friend reviewed the various starter paint sets because it made me try out scale 75 and i absolutely love the paints so much that I sold off all of my previous paint lines including reaper, p3, vallejo game air, citadel air and my second set of citadel paints because i can finally achieve fairly painless wet blending transitions now with this amazing product. Great video BTW thank you for showing us even the mistakes during the process and how you compensate for them!

Finally a video that shows the whole process without cuts! Now I see that you have the same problems with blending that I have. Previously I had the impression that everybody's blends went right from the first brush stroke and that I was an incapable idiot because I had to do my blending over and over until I got i right. Thank you for the boos in confidence :)

God damn I am so glad to hear you've had that sitting for two years. I've been so stressed that I've left my Imperial Fists with a basecoat and highlights for a few months, it's good to know that it's kind of normal while waiting for inspiration.

I’ve just watched a guy eat paint for half an hour and I really enjoyed it. I guess that tells me more about myself than about my beginner‘s painting technique. Maybe I should start licking the brushes more often. You know: „You are, what you eat“. BE THE PAINT! Thanks for this video! I will try these blending techniques on a spare stormcast eternal. Got to start somewhere an now I am curious!

I really enjoyed the long form video, it's cool to see you work and chat through the whole process. Also great to see you using inks...I bought some ever since have been left thinking "what the hell am I supposed to do with these?!" they're so pigmented and glossy! Awesome to see them in use for the shadows.

I have to appreciate the fact that you cut to facecam EVERY time you lick your brush. It's like you're going out of your way to disgust sensitive viewers out of spite. I love it.

5:54 and 8:10 don't eat paint kids. Use your finger and thumb to shape your brush tip. Older you will be thankful. Edit: Please Google "acrylic slow drying medium" if the reason you eat paint is because your paint is drying too quickly. Nearly all minitures paints are acrylic so it should work and give you more time to wet blend without needing to eat your paint. Seriously, paint is full of chemicals that you really don't want to be consuming on a regular basis.

Love watching your videos Scott. you taught me a lot on your channel and I'm glad to be one of your subscribers. I'm a female miniature painter and I lick my brushes when I paint too. May look like a dirty habit but it's effective. Darn acrylics dry so flipping quickly. My habits started when I used to sculpt dollhouse miniatures and paint them. Paintbrush and tongue became best friends. I like painting my elfen and tabaxi miniatures.
