As a beginner seeing the whole process just clicks better for me, then a video where you're told about a process or technique and then showing just a 5 minute highlight clip of said process. It's a mixture and seeing all the little minute changes and timeframe that gives me a much better frame of reference. I know this format is much longer but I appreciate it greatly. Thank you again.

@@Insane_Kane Yeah, obviously this isn't really for army painting. You could do a more simple NMM if you want that technique for a large army. But spending a bunch of hours on display pieces or heroes/commanders etc. isn't such a big deal, right?

Recently saw a mini that I really like that was painted NMM. I have never done NMM so it’s intimidating but videos like this one where I can see every brush stroke is reassuring. It’s reassuring bc I think a lot of us new painters see you guys, the professionals, pump out these gorgeous minis like it’s nothing and what seems like in no time almost as if it is magic. Yet, when I see this, I can see that the one face of the blade was an adventure for you and not just some quick slops of paint that ended up being perfect. I appreciate the video Scott. I highly recommend people take photos and then import their model into gimp/photoshop to play around with gradients and NMM effects. It is much faster at giving you an idea of what works or doesn't than doing it by brush the first few times imo.

Amazing result and a great video! I like this format for a couple reasons. First off, it gives real insight into the progression of appearance you can expect as you employ this technique. Without the exposure to that process, its easy to get frustrated when your early work on something like this looks so far away from what you are trying to do. Second, I appreciate that it offers a sense in scale for the time commitment of a project like this - even if I find that scale a bit discouraging. While I certainly didn't expect NMM to be as simple as throwing on a wash and a drybrush, the 1 1/4 hour+ time budget for 2/5 of an axe blade gives a useful reality check for someone with a lot of unpainted plastic. That kind of insight allows me to make smarter decisions about when to employ techniques like this and when to stick with the shiny stuff. Up to this point I have been able to be pretty chill about others playing with and handling the models I paint - something I spent this kind of time on would definitely go into a case, far far away from the clumsy cheeto mitts of the unwashed tabletop hordes.

I've spent a solid month trying to learn as much as I can about painting NMM, and your videos have been extremely helpful. I have also been looking into true metallic metals, and weighing my options between the two. I then had a thought, what would it look like to use the techniques of painting nonmetallic metals with the use of artificial shadows and artificial highlights, except using metallic paints. For instance instead of using black, shades of grey, and white for silver, one would use the same style but with a dark nearly black gunmetal, shades of silver, and highlight with a type of platinum or pearl metallic. From what I have seen true metallic metals rely allot on the metallic paint itself to give the shine effect often giving it a rough-looking surface you would expect from an unpolished piece of metal like a common kitchen knife, while nonmetallic metals seem to focus on replicating the shine of a mirror. I haven't seen anything that really tries to do this and after I learn how to paint normal nonmetallic to a degree I am comfortable with I will be attempting to try it and see how it turns out.

I was wondering how you protect the paint while preserving elements like when you used ink for a satin finish. I imagine a varnish would cover that up. Do you just have to match different varnishes to certain areas?

Great tutorial on NMM Scott. I think the effect you got looks pretty good for how much time you did it in. I think it was working better though when you had the bright highlights going on the top of the blade. I like this style of video, the live feel.

Like these vids, they are interesting and you're one of the few painters brave enough to post this stuff. I'm not sure about the two bits of the blade highlights that spill into the middle flat area. They looked like painting errors more than parts of the effect. I kept wanting you to paint them in.

I think I go wrong in not spending enough time. I mean, I've easy spent over an hour painting a model before but that was a model. Not just the metallic look on a weapon on a model. And that wasn't even the whole weapon. Just the blade. At that stage, I fully don't blame you for rambling.

I was wondering when its the time you decide to change the brush? At what point you decide: "okay, time to change from 1 to 0" or vice versa? How to recognize that point?
