FYI, when on a cruise, ALL tips put on your room charge or prepaid go to the tip pool for the entire staff. Tipping a server or bartender extra on the receipt does not give that extra to that person. The only tips that go fully to a staff member are cash tips handed to them directly.

@@sherrjo Ships with home ports in the US, I would imagine the crew would prefer their cash tips in US Dollars. They wouldn't have much use for Euros. They could exchange them but would lose money on the exchange.

You completely broke me when you went on the accent tangent into German accent and language! 😂 I had figured alcohol was your biggest expense, but that’s really not bad for a 12 night cruise, even with the wine. I blame supply chain issues when I sailed on Jewel of the Seas last year. One standard cocktail, Cool as a Cucumber, couldn’t be made because the bars had no cucumbers. Hendricks gin was also hard to find in some bars. I’m sailing on Harmony of the Seas next month (hopefully without needing stitches), and I purchased the deluxe beverage package and the unlimited dining package. Both at decent rates. I take advantage of all the beverage offerings. The unlimited dining package makes sense for us, because we planned on eating at all the specialty restaurants. It would be a horrible value to pay a la carte. I’m not doing any excursions, so I felt pretty good about splurging on food and beverages. My onboard account will probably be daily gratuities only. That’s really not bad at all. Sorry for the long post. I’m very excited about my upcoming trip. Have a great time at DLP! I’ve only been there once in 2011, and loved it. Walt’s was my favorite restaurant.

The final number came in, pretty close to what I expected. A guy from Minnesota living in Germany would keep expenses in reason. As you pointed out, it would be very easy to spend that amount of money on alcohol because the drinks are expensive. I’ve only done a transatlantic one time and I loved it. By the way, your trip to Türkiye last year was a huge success.

My husband and I always do NCL because we really like to drink and spend time at the bar so we always get the drinks package. That’s the reason we’ve always debated ever trying a RC cruise. It seems expensive 😕 As for tips, since we spend a lot of time at the bar, if we’ve had really awesome bartenders ( which we normally always do), one that we chatted with all week, then we’ll leave a bigger tip at the end of the cruise. Maybe 30 ish dollars to that specific bartender, if we did good in the casino maybe even a bit more lol

12 days WITH gratuity, that is a very reasonable bill. My guess was way off....... My guess was that Chris Wong may have kept you in the casino too long $$$$, 12 days of the open casino might bankrupt me.

many cruisers "in the know" give the cabin steward a tip on day 1 also . . . .and when they leave. posts on vids say doing this guarantees your room gets done quickly and perhaps with a few extra fresh towels.

What a fun time we had aboard our World Record cruise across the Atlantic. Just checked our folio and we were very similar at $616. Ours looked a lot different however because it said shopping … shopping…. shopping. The Drink package on our last seven night cruise in January cost us more than the actual price of our cruise room. 😮 It was really great having a chance to meet you and Marcus on our trip. Looking forward to many more videos from our journey across the pond.

We always prepay the gratuities since you get a discount and also you have months prior to boarding to pay them. In addition, on the last full day of sailing we always tip three people directly with cash = room steward, waiter, assistant waiter - especially since they always take direct care of us.

At around $50.00 a day for a drinks package seems good value if you do like to have a few drinks. The drink prices you mentioned for wine and beer means if you had more than five drinks a day you would be in front. Lets face it if you're on holiday 4 or 5 beers and two or three glasses of wine with a meal each day isn't over the top. So a drinks package could be good value, especially if you aren't paying gratitude charges for each drink, I'm not sure if that's how it works? Thanks for a very informative video.
@edstuff1198

You get about 4 1/2 glasses (6 oz. each glass) of wine per bottle. With 2 people sharing a bottle, that isn't a lot of wine. A 6 oz. glass of wine, a 12 oz. bottle of beer or a 1.5 oz. shot of vodka, etc. all have about the same amount of alcohol. So sharing a bottle of wine with another person is the same as having 2 of any kind of drink. Hardly excessive.

I don’t know why people argue about drink package. Whether it’s worth it is dependent on you. At $56 a day I would have bought it and I personally would come out on top at that price (I always get the soda package and that’s $9 at least a day so $46 to add alcohol is worth it. But on my last cruise I did not get it because it was $80 a day and I knew I would not spend that much. I did get the soda package but my end of cruise bill was only about $200. That included two lunches at specialty restaurants. I do think your attitude changes though if you have the drink package, you are more likely to try something new because you are not worried about the cost, and I think you consciously think about getting your value out of it. I do like having it for the peace of mind but it depends what the cost is still. I am not going to pay $80 a day when I know I won't be anywhere near that paying a la carte.

Just completed a 7-night western Caribbean cruise on Wonder of the Seas (4-11June 2023). It was the first cruise for 6 of the 8 of us in our group (me, wife, 2 adult children & their partners, my sister-in-law & her husband). None of us purchased any of the drink or specialty restaurant packages. My wife and I only ate at the complimentary restaurants…Main dining room a couple of times for breakfast and 4 times for dinner, lunch at the park cafe twice, 2 times at el loco fresh, and once in the windjammer. We had breakfast in the windjammer 5 days. Solarium cafe for dinner twice (reservations made for us-we didn’t request them). My wife doesn’t drink alcohol, but I purchased an average of 3 drinks per day (Brought bottles of wine, too-ended up with 5 because my son & his girlfriend don’t like wine and my daughter and her boyfriend only wanted one bottle-I gave one unopened bottle to the cabin attendant-along w/$50. Surprisingly, the two times we took bottles of wine to the main dining room for dinner, we were not charged a corkage fee. Our biggest single expense on our final bill was for the spa…wife & I had an acupuncture session: over $700!!!. When we handed the bill to sign at the end of our session, we were shocked at the cost-and the fact that they had added on 2 extra charges each that we did not request when we made the appointment: cupping and electrical stimulation; which were administered to us, but we were not asked during the session or told that it was extra. It kind of pissed us off. We, of course, did not leave any additional gratuity. Acupuncture session was $200, cupping $50, electric stimulation $50, plus the 18% automatic gratuity. We were going to go to the service desk to dispute the extra charges before the end of the cruise (we did not want to be confrontational with the Dr who administered the treatment) since they were not disclosed up front, but completely forgot-should have went right after the session.

That is crazy! I would never pay that much! Dude, seriously, just get that stuff done on land. It costs much less and it's a great way to add something interesting to a boring week when nothing else is happening. Know what I mean? I feel like, when you're on a cruise, you're already doing something fun and interesting. Save those other things for at home. I'm glad you had a good time, anyways. If we ever end up on the same cruise, let's open a bottle of wine together!

You already are charged gratuities plus we all give some extra but I don’t think we should be made to feel like we need to constantly be tipping more, this could become a problem plus didn’t most of the lines just recently raise gratuities? We will be cruising this month and the person we tip at both the beginning and at the end is our room steward, they have always gone above and beyond. We use the main dining room and the buffet most of the time on RC also and have always been happy with them. Sometimes we do one specialty restaurant during the cruise. Great video!

Hi Morgan, I guessed $600 for your bill. We are sailing on Explorer for our first ever cruise in October and, as we are not big alcohol drinkers and prefer to spend our money elsewhere, we booked the refreshment package. It will be interesting to see if our decision was good value or not. We paid for gratuities in advance too, so it's good to have that out of the way in advance. I'm in Australia and recently did a Royal caribbean cruise, the friend I was sharing a cabin with got a special on the deluxe drinks package and I would do the drinks package again in a heart beat, I didn't have to worry and was more experimental, I had wine with meals ( we didn't bring any onboard), cocktails, specialty coffee's and my fav scotch I can rearly afford. I added all these up and it was more than what I paid for drinks package. I'm a beer drinker at home but didn't have any as I could enjoy a cocktail or 2 or 3. I was never drunk or even close, I only got off the ship once. I also don't do the myriads of activities, I just enjoyed chilling out, playing cards, reading a book etc . In Australia our gratuity is included, so what did i spend? ( other than my drinks package) $10 for a new lanyard. Not bad I thought.😊

Thanks for sharing! You did good on the extras for a 12-day cruise. DH and I take bottles with us because hubby has specific likes and usually the cruise line doesn't carry it. He likes Moscato and we have found some reasonable ones to bring with us that are pretty good. So, when we are having dinner, between the two of us, we can easily kill a bottle. Heck we're not driving, right? I, on the other hand, have a vaster wine taste so it doesn't bother me. We get the drink package with Princess because it covers all drinks (specialty coffee, juices, water bottles, soda and alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails). However, with the other 2 cruise lines we have tried, we did not get the drink package because we felt it was not cost effective for us as we are not daily consumers. I hope to someday to a transatlantic, but I think (no, I know) that my gambling alone would be much more than what you spent. I think what you had owed on this trip was very good. I thought it would be around $500. Thanks for sharing :)

I travel on Oceania for the most part and normally a month at a time so we do add an extra $400 for our butler and $200 for our room stewards. Specialty restaurants are covered and we hardly drink so small expense there. Our biggest expense is most definitely the spa! 😉 My uncle established and owner Red Stripe beer. I, so far, have always bought the drink package. I only get it because I do not want a bill at the end of my cruise. I never drink my limit of 15 drinks per day though! My next cruise is 8 days and I may not be able to afford it, still debating that one. I also always prepay my gratuities BUT also add $1 to every drink or meal that is served to me (and tip my steward handsomely on day 1) so I do request that the automatic gratuities be removed from my final bill. And I spend WAY too much in the casino! (Hence why I don't want a bill at the end! 😀) My bill is usually 5 to 10 pages so yes my charges are much higher than yours. 🤣🤣🤣

My parents took a meditation cruise on royal Caribbean lost at least 5000 in the casino, never received a free cruise back in early 2000. Not good.

Not separate bills - but he pays me the extras he does! We pay gratuities at booking.

We have separate bills now because we have separate businesses and I can claim some of mine as a travel agent. :)

If the gratuities are fixed, then I don't understand why they just don't include them in the price of the cruise? It's like buying a plane ticket, then having to pay at the gate for an actual seat. Then again, I only took one cruise in my life, and that was on a RCCL ship back in 2005. Oh, and I way over guessed your extra spending (I guessed in the thousand dollar range). Can't wait for your "Live Sofatime" video when Markus speaks!!!!!!! Does he speak with a heavy German accent too (in English)???

Why I prefer to tip in US dollars rather than in euros: You can give 1 dollar as a bill, it looks ok. If you give a 1 euro coin (for the American viewers: there are no 1 euro bills) it looks like "gewollt und nicht gekonnt" (Morgan, please translate that saying for me)

Im so glad that in Australia on royal carribean that our gratuities are all included in our cruise fare :) although saying that our cruise fares are double or triple what they pay in the USA

Gratuities are included in the fare price on P&O Australia too, and I think also on Carnival though I can’t say for sure as our cruise was cancelled due to Covid.

@@Duchess_of_Cadishead yes :) we have only ever cruised twice, both on p&o Australia. We were on the very first cruise when they reopened cruising in aus :) then on one may last year :) we have a virgin cruise booked for our honeymoon in December and a cruise on quantum of the seas with my mum booked for march next year, really looking forward to them both :)

Great video, once you get to Diamond status you'll get 4 drinks per day, I think its 60 points to achieve. that. Are they cleaning your room once a day now? Would you recommend a trans Atlantic, seems like too many sea days. Looking forward to your upcoming videos. Averdersein ha ha

Hi Joan! July is a great time to be in Hamburg. I think you’ll really like it here. However, an actually not a travel agent. I’m just somebody who loves traveling. You can check out all the normal places where you would look for a cruise to see if you can find one that matches your dates. I hope something works out!

Great video. I'm not a cruiser but watch your community closely. I see a upward trend in pricing and I feel that the days of fair pricing and great deals are gone. All I see is a trend for higher prices and less amenities.
