Thank you so much for this insight. For the past year, my 20W output laser had been working up to its potential. After getting a Lightburn update a few weeks ago, I had been struggling with VERY low power output; the laser was basically useless. I tried everything I could find on the various settings tabs. I did indeed see the "Max spindle speed (RPM), S-value min $30" in "Machine Settings" category, but I didn't think it had anything to do with laser power (spindle speed, huh?). Also, I didn't connect that to the "S-value max" setting in "Device Settings". Who knew? I actually thought my laser module was "burned out". After following your suggestions, I found that these settings were WAY out-of-whack so-to-speak; spindle speed was set to 1000 and S-value max was set to 225!!!! After making them equal (both 1000), now all is good. Again, thank you so much.

If any of you would have read the setup procedure for Lightburn with a grbl device, this is clearly specified... These are actually min/max spindle speeds, and the Lightburn figures out what values the controller is expecting from these settings. Needless to say, both Lightburn and the controller need to know these values. With a solid state device that is digital, like these ssl (diode), they only run at 100%, you can't lower them. If you set it to 50%, the laser is on 100% power for 50% of the time. Running at 100% (or on) should not harm the device if it's designed well enough to take the heat away. Glass tube co2 are analog and, as analog devices, they can have their lives shortened by high current operation.

Working on a "100W" glass tube laser we don't run above 80%. Measured input power V*A and compared with optical power W, past 80% all the extra power just turns to heat, and was cutting tube life from 500 days to below 200 days. If you use glass a lot, beg borrow or rent a power meter imho.

So for diodes it’s the number of lenses that amplifies the laser. One laser is 5w 2 is 10w 4 is 20w etc. The settings I speak of is just making sure the % of available power is correct. When you set the s-value numbers to match…. The controlled % of 1-100 is actual. (Example: Speed and Power). Hope that helps some!!

So if both your setting match up you should be good. By adding a 0 to both… it won’t do anything “extra”. It doesn’t change the actual power of the laser. I would default to 10,000. It’s not going to over clock your laser like a CPU so there is no worry about damaging your laser. Once you change these settings just set your power to 100% all the time. A lot of times even when cutting throught 3mm you only need 85-90% power.

So these numbers represent a percentage of power. You can’t over clock your laser. If it’s a 10w Diode… you can’t make it a 20w diode. If these numbers don’t match, you’re only going to using a certain percentage of your available power. That’s about it. Hope that helped!

Nope! More power faster. Don’t be fooled by people saying 100% power is bad. They don’t know what they’re talking about. Lasers were meant to be used. Higher power and less passes. You’ll have less charring too! If you’re not sure …. Make a circle or box and on a section of the wood that’s waste…. Set to 8-9 passes and count how many it takes it to drop. This is how many passes you’ll need for the project and add 1 for good measure. All wood is different so hopefully this helps some!

Does this work for cO2 lasers also? In following along with your video I’m not finding the same settings. Thank you!

It doesn’t. CO2 lasers power solely off the controller and do not use Lightburns settings.

Do you know if this applies to the Longer Ray5 lasers?
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman2 ай бұрын
It’s mainly a Lightburn thing. Happens a lot for CNC / Laser combos. If it’s a “Laser Only” machine it’s possible the Device and Machine settings can be off. I’d double check to make sure they match.

on a atomstack a24, both my values picked up 1,000 (was manually added, it did not automatically find the laser). Since the a24 has 600mm/36000rpm speed, can this go higher? I feel like it's not unlocking its full potential of a 24w laser as i see in review videos for material tests

Do you hold down the shift key when you are dragging out your circle?
@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! @roadcrayon1525 is 100% correct. If you hold shift…. Then drag your cursor…. It will stay a perfect circle. If you don’t it will be oblong. Worst case make sure you unlock the dimensions and hand type the exact same measurements you need in both Width and Height then Lock it again! Thanks for Watching!!!

@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman2 ай бұрын
It won’t. It only is a Percentage. So if one is set at 1000 and the other is 10000…. Then that means you’re only using 10% when your settings are at 100% power.

As long as they match. 1000 each or 10000 each! If one is 1000 and the other is 10000 then at 100% power you’d only be using 10%.
