Reaper saturation, as well as the Slate Fresh air plugin, which is %100 free are amazing for that "cut" effect. Also don't be afraid to use the Reaper stock limiter for ultra-present vocals.

Is there a benefit to putting the reverb on a separate channel with a send to it from your lead vocal?

There's pros and cons to both. Putting the verb on a send allows you to send multiple tracks to it. For this video I tried to keep it simple by making it an insert.

Reaper has a 60-day trial. It has a tuning plugin but not virtual instruments. I would encourage you to check it out!
