From the self defense (SD) point of view, the technical get up is possiby the worst and most impractical dojo or ringfighting technique that exists. It is very dangerous for a number o reasons, but you yourself demonstrate one of those reasons. At the start of the video you say you should get up while having up a cover guard with one arm and the other hand on the ground. But then later in the video you execute it with two hands on the ground. This is a gold-engraved invitation to get your head kicked off your shoulders. How do I know this? Bcs I have 17,000 clips of SD fights and while I have many examples of guys getting head kicked while in this position, I have ZERO examples of a successful technical get up. We get this kind of poor SD advice bcs the gurus refuse to look at the evidence of what ACTUALLY happens in SD fights. First, why are you on the ground? How did you get there? If youy were sucker punched, then do you think you are going to have the muscle memory to perform such a complex, and unnatural movement, including using the MMA high guard? No, you won't. And there is very likely to be more than one attacker and if there is just one, will he be standing in front of you or keeping his distance? no, the attack that he put you down with will be continued with kicks and punches. Anyway, I have no soace to go into this at length, but let me give some basic advice. When you hit the ground you are in a very bad situation. You have to strinve to get not just up but also away. So the first thing you may want to do is ROLL AWAY. Yes, it seems silly, but it can be very helpful. This can screw up their timing and get you briefly out of range. Then get up as fast as you can, ready either to counterattack or run. When you do try to stand, avoid having your arms away from your body for support. A bad guy could kick you arm out. First thing is to get to a postion where you are kneeling with the knee of one legg next to the ankle of the other. If you have to use a supporting arm, put the hand down so tha the arm is ine contact with the body, not away from the body. Now your body is quite solid and balanced. Ypu can ofc still be pushed over, kicked and dragged, but your body is more compact and resistant and stable like this. The next step is to go to a genuflected (one-legged kneeling) psotion. Frm here you canal stand up in various directions, or even go for punches to the opponent's family jewels or go for a single leg, which is a good technique if you have practised it and if the opponent comes in to crowd you with punches or knees. This has been shown to work from a kneeling position in many SD fights. But you have to have trained it. Get the technique right. It is also not a complicated move, and it is a gross motor movement, so if you are dazed, then you can still execute it. As to cover guards, protecting the head and the face, the best guard here is to cross-face. That means that you put your nose inside your elbow with the arm wrapped around your head. This guard protects both sides of your head and cannot be pulled away or down by an opponent. Ofc it is not perfect but no guard is. It also lead]ves one arm free for hitting or ewarding off or for bracing the guarding arm as you stand and perhaps transition into the MMS high guard. I advise everyone to try this stuff out. Getting up fron the ground for escspe or counterattack is a basic SD skill, and it needs to be practised. But the tecbnical get up, that is an SD disaster.
