As I'm starting my second year of van life, I want to be more prepared for the winter this time around. So I decided to insulate my van and, try out a few gadgets that could help battle the cold.

I love my electric blanket in my van! Never failed me yet! Just remember to put it on about 15 minutes before going to bed… and always eat something warm just before bedtime… also, if one takes a short, but brisk walk just before bedtime, the heat from ones body will warm up the air in the van. Another tip is to have a hot water bottle down by your feet. These are tips I got from another vanlifer - who loves winter-camping in the northern parts of Sweden. … keeping your head, feet and hands warm is always a must-to-do. Your videos are very useful to me giving me ideas how to deck out my van . As for bedding I will use a throw over the kind of ones you put on your sofa . I've been using one in my static caravan. Even in winter REALLY COMFY

Amazon UK sells a low watt (500) personal heater which might work…Also 12v heater car blankets might work for you

A lot of van lifers swear by diesel air heaters, truck drivers use in their cabs. No gas, it runs on the diesel in their trucks. It’s a dry heat and doesn’t run on gas canisters or produce condensation. There are cheaper Chinese makes for about £120 on Amazon. I don’t know what they are like though? You can also get 12volt electric blankets specifically for cars/trucks, that run from cigarette lighters, last longer and don’t use up so much juice. Good to see you back and well again.

They do a 12volt blanket which may be more energy efficient? But the only way to go is a Chinese diesel heater, just bite the bullet. The only downside is that it will dry out and shrink all the wood you’ve just hammered in 😖.

Nice to see you back up and running again. Insulating the van will make a big difference. A small 2kw Chinese diesel heater will fit in your van easily and be a lot safer than a gas heater. Time to get out the candle heaters I think.

I have a butane heater in my shed...the whole room gets damp with condensation so now I just use it to take the edge off.then use my oil filled electric rad. In such a small van I wouldn't recommend gas..your co2 alarm would go off I minutes.. Good.luck

Someone else has just informed me of this... How long do you have it on for, for it to get damp? My plan was to have it just running in the morning for a quick 30 mins in the morning to take the edge off. I wouldn't have it running a lot otherwise. What do you reckon?

My shed is big..if I have it on full about 15mins and I can see condensation forming on my bike...in a small space I'd say a few mins..I know you don't want a diesel heater but a 2k one would be your best option..it also gives out dry heat so no issues with damp..

Welcome back. Quick tip with your heater, use butane, it may not kick out as much heat but it's easier on the lungs than propane.
