Happy little message I just wanted to say that your channel inspired me to become a groomer and bather for cats and dogs. Watching your channel for so long gave me the confidence to reach out and apply. I got accepted and not only have I had the best teachers, made amazing friends, and met some lovely pets, I've also been able to take matted, reactive, and neglected dogs that my colleagues were a bit scared to take on. Now I've been offered to go to the academy for grooming and have it paid in full. If not for you, I would have never found this path that makes me so genuinely happy, and I'm actually getting to make a difference. Thanks to you, I've found a career that has been so fulfilling and rewarding, and I'll never be more grateful. Your content has allowed me to find my purpose, and one day, I hope to meet you in person and thank you for all you done (for everyone that you've helped and the other strangers you've inspired)

Our shitsu had severe allergies also. We finally found that pure chicken, veggies (peas & carrots) and rice was the ticket after many years of him being miserable. We and the vet had been trying everything. Just having pure unadulterated food made all the difference. So thankfully his last 8 years were wonderful. Sadly we recently lost him at the age of 15. Our little senior had more years feeling feisty and good-he really was such a LOVEBUG!!

We were the home for the end of life for an old man. He was 8 when we got him and we were told there wasn't long left for him with all his health issues. He was suffering from allergies that hadn't been treated either. Same constantly infected skin and ears. Turned out he was allergic to chicken. Removed that from his diet and he lived on for another 8 years with us crossing the rainbow bridge at the ripe old age of 16. Still miss that finicky old man. I've been that "home for the end of life" for quite a few little dogs. It's amazing what a little extra can do. A 13 yr old cockapoo that lived to age 21, A "hospice" poodle that lived 1.5 more years, an obese bichon that became like a puppy after losing 8 lbs. It's sooooo worth it. ❤

I got a 12 - 14 year old "dying from cancer" dog - it was just a lipoma and with love and care (and crapload of expense) he was with us ten more years and fostered elderly Labrador that was 18, with the worst joints the vet has seen that for two years was a joyous, active dog. Saying goodbye is difficult but knowing that their last years likely were their best is priceless. @@irener.3849 that's amazing you had reached out to the derm resource. I feel like they aren't as accessible in my area of Canada and have heard other Americans reaching out to specialty vets in feline cases too. Great resource! We cooked our dogs food when we had a Lhasa Apso with even worse allergies than my Shih when I was a teen, then moved to hydrolyzed protein kibble from the vet for convenience. But luckily I was able to move my Shih from that to high end pet food with a novel protein once my Lhasa passed. It took a lot of trial and error and allergy tests were not as prevalent as they are now so total guess work. Paid off though and I hope other owners read this and find some confidence to try and better their pets skin conditions by taking it into their hands. Sometimes vet care can only treat the symptoms not cure, which is where owners educating themselves or finding other resources comes into play.

Seems like some dogs - and cats - with skin or ear problems, has to do with diet. Two neighbors switched diets for a cat and a dog. The cat’s years ear infections disappeared and the dog’s itchiness/yeast problems went away. Someone else I used to know who had a dog who always had sparse fur, almost bald, ran out of dog food one day, used another one and the fur grew back. Obviously this doesn’t apply to every dog or cat with skin issues but it also doesn’t seem that unusual.

Its a shame and as an owner with a dog that had bad allergies too, it can be hard to deny them the love and affection of a reward when you simply don't know which ones will make them suffer more :C Thankfully we figured it out for our puppo, but this little guy looks like he's still getting there, or is simply far more severely allergic than others.

I don’t know how you got that impression. I’ve never heard her trying to defend owners, and good for her because some of her clients are a mess due to clear owner neglect. You think because they occasionally take their pet to a groomer they can’t be guilty of neglect? Think again. Some of her clients need a vet, not a free groom for social media attention.

Aww he looks like he feels a lot better! I love how considerate you are to their comfort, especially when they have underlying issues. Our cavapoo was “yeasty” in his ears and paws and we had him tested for allergies too. Knowing his triggers and changing his diet helped clear up the yeast significantly!! He gets fresh Ollie food (no kibble ever), and homemade doggie biscuits with no oats. The store bought cookies have ingredients that just fed the yeast to no end. We treat his ears with a rinse from the vet monthly, and with the diet changes, he’s cleared up!!

He's cute with or without the hair. Its too bad he has yeast infections. I cleaned for a lady who's dog also had yeast infections. When ever I vacuumed I would put him on the sofa with his bed. He knew that he wasn't allowed on the sofa but it was ok when I put him on it. It got to the point that whenever he heard the vacuum, he would come running to be put on the sofa. He wasn't afraid of the vacuum, which was the reason I put him on the sofa. He was an old dog but he learned that when I ran the vacuum, he was going to get on the sofa. Old dogs can learn new tricks especially if they get something they want!

I agree that if a dog has allergies, try a *limited-ingredient diet* (LID), perhaps grain-free as well. Do it just in case some of the dog's allergies are due to the dog's current diet. (Though it sounds like perhaps shih tzus may simply have a genetic predisposition to allergy?) There are many LIDs out there, each usually featuring a specific protein (salmon, rabbit, chicken, beef, etc.). A dog with food allergies can be allergic to some proteins but not others. In my spaniel's case, he had ongoing digestive problems and ear infections. After trial and error with a limited-ingredient diet, problems were resolved with the _third_ LID dog food I tried--salmon and sweet potato dog food! (Note: I tried LID chicken and LID beef dog foods first, and he did not show any improvement. It was the salmon/fish protein LID that ended up working for him.) I also sometimes wonder if products in a dog's environment (like carpeting in the house, or the faux shearling dog bed, or the fabric on the sofa) can contribute to a dog's skin problems.

OMG he is the spitting image of my Shih Tzu. My life is complete from having own my lil fella. The issues with this dog are the same ones I had with mine. He had two months of itching, compulsive licking, chewing and scratching. He developed numerous blocked sebaceous glands. One became horribly infected, and when it blew it coated his side, dried and became a 2" x 4" plate. The vet removed it. He was put on antifungal and antibiotics, pain meds and an anti-inflammatory. It took another course of antibiotic to clear up his skin. He was just diagnosed with hyperadrenocorticism, or Cushings disease. Eli has the skin infections, thinning hair and a pot belled appearance. All of these this dog has.

I am always concerned that a dog's "allergies" could be diet related. A human grade, raw, fresh food diet could be designed to avoid whatever a dog's irritants are. Many times the culprit is a carb-rich kibble. Such an approach could eliminate the causes of many dogs' "allergies". Worth a look for little Jersey IF his vet would cooperate! Woof! 🐶💓

The crux of the problem is the thinking that everyone has the RIGHT to own a pet when it should be considered a PRIVILEGE. That would help stop the over abundance of animals. They deserve vet care, good food, great owners and a loving environment. If you don’t have time for them, can’t afford them, won’t take care of them then PLEASE buy the stuffed animal.☺️

I hope his owners get him on the right diet, that yeast looks nasty and painful. We have 1 cat with skin issues that had to be grain-free fed and it helped her a lot now all the cats get grain-free food. Grain isn't exactly "natural" for cats and dogs anyway. We did have to try a few brands but all is well after switching. Might be worth a try.

Definitely a grain free and veggie free diet for cats. They are obligate carnivores, so their diet should never contain less than 70% meat. Canines however, are not obligate carnivores and would be classified closer to omnivore. So, grains, fruits, and veg are necessary for optimum health. That doesn't mean that they can't develop allergies though. I often wonder if some of the issues come from spaying and neutering too soon, which disrupts the endocrine system. More research should be done on this issue.

@ferretyluv With treat training, they get over it fairly quick, even senior cats. My hurricane rescue has Wheat, Corn, and Soy allergies. I eliminated Rice out of habit. He gets grain free treats, as well as a small portion of cooked meat, and a feeding schedule that works around the human mealtimes too. If he gets insistent, he gets gently physically moved from the area, and rewarded when he stays put. Eventually he turned down hotdog buns, and waits for his extra spoon of wet food and pumpkin. Took about two solid months of training, and he's been good for many, many years. If only training a certain relative to not give him foods he's allergic to went that well!😸😹🎻
