Some clarifications on this method that didn't fit into the video: - This method is was designed as an alternative to typical speedpainting methods, it's just another way to paint among many but it's a way that I've been painting lately that I find really satisfying. - Are there faster methods? Yes... but that's missing the point. This is a sort of "Step Two" if you are bored of systems like Slapchop and want to spend maybe 45-70 mins on each figure rather than 30 mins. - This method was designed around this idea that I have trouble focusing on one task for too long, and I have trouble finishing things, so I broke the tasks of miniature painting down into smaller and smaller steps with a very low barrier to entry to each, made it a lot more easier for my brain to make progress on things when approaching large armies for games like The Old World! - Hope this insight is helpful :)

As my Grey Ziggurat of potential grows ever higher, I'm always looking for ways of reducing it's stature. Slapchop doesn't really do it for me, but this is a system of work thats not a million miles away from how I currently paint so I'm going to give it a shot on a few minis ASAP and see how it suits me. Cheers !

What intrigues me about the "wash first, then layer" is that it ensures, even if you miss spots, the model will still have tons of color. Rather than just being the base prime, that will stand out like a beacon. It will instead be whatever the wash color was. Between that and the later glazing step, it is very accommodating to a sloppy, painterly style. (Or for painters who haven't yet developed good brush control).

Revisiting older "beginner" hobby videos. Lost a bunch of stuff to a flooded basement and had to sell the rest to cover repairs. So im trying to avoid the trapping of previous hobby attempts where i bought too much of everything and had giant unorganized piles of products barely being used. This method looks fantastic and i cant wait to check it out. Also the tip about priming not needing to cover every single inch is so fantastic, i think its one of the reasons we dont get good results, we are so focused on getting every little bit covered we lose out on details! So have a comment Dana this is a great video and i hope my lil piece of engagement will help the algo show this video to new, old, and returning painters.

Back when I wasnt nearly as experienced a painter as now, i used something similar to this to paint a squad of Pink Horrors for a GW store 100 minute competition. White prime, metal jewelry, red wash for the pink and i had 10 models for about 10 minutes per model! It really does work

Painting metals first is such a great tip. I hate painting metallics and getting them out of the way instantly makes picking up the model to paint more appealing. The additional note of getting a base layer/shade layer down with speed paints so you can get on to the fun highlighting is great. Anything to make it more exciting to pick up a brush and a model IMO is revolutionary!!

This method seems perfectly suited to the grimdark style in many Warhammer interpretations. I have struggled in the past getting things dingy enough, but this seems like it goes HARD to dingy and then it's my responsibility to bring it back in the high areas to an acceptable level. I'm going to test this out on one of my models. I'm curious now...

This is really similar to my older style of painting fantasy and more organic models (as opposed to hard-edged sci-fi armor). I start with a white or very bright prime, and then use a neutral brown wash (the old Secret Weapon Baby Poop made by Les Burley's recipes if you wanna DIY these days) to define shading and help my poor old eyes to see the model, and then bring up the colors from there with a few passes of thinned down paint and one highlight layer for rank-and-file minis (more for hero and centerpiece models). If I want a cooler tone, I've played around with a blue or green oriented wash instead, but I hadn't gone really far with that. It's served me well for a really long time.

Satire aside, doing washes before applying base colors is a great recommendation that I haven't tried but intend to after seeing this. I actually usually avoid washes because of the overall staining effect and having to go back over everything a second time with the base color.

my process for using contrast/speed paints is pretty involved. i prime black using my airbrush, pre-shade with dry brushing grey and white. then i go back to the airbrush and start using inks. i do a very light zenithal white and bring up the brightness on select areas that look too dark. then i do an undershade using deep red or violet or whatever will go with the majority rest of the paints. for some areas of the model i will also do a pre-highlight with inks from the airbrush, example i use a bright yellow on top of ork skin. then i go in and start painting with contrasts. anything that wasn't pre-highlighted with the aibrush i will start adding brighter highlights by drybrushing and edge highlighting. some of the contrasts hide the undershade so i'm debating making that my last step.
