Instead of Santa Claus, it was Father Frost, and the New Year Celebration basically incorporated Christmas themes and celebrations. So in the end they just celebrated Christmas like everyone, but on the 31st rather than the 25th, and without Jesus. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Io Saturnalia, Happy Yule and Happy New Year!

Religion was never banned - It was just not popular, cause science was on top of everything. War on religion during revolution and a little after was explained by support of White army by priests and holdind of forbidden property (like land, luxuries, and peasents).
