If someone didn’t mention it already, the head elf that asks Buddy about his toy quota was played by Peter Billingsley, who was also the lead - Ralphie - in the classic “A Christmas Story” (“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”)

It is interesting that not many people do pick up on that when they watch this movie. The thing is that he looks exactly the same as when he was a kid. That same look of the eyes. I like the other movie he was in a couple years before A Chrsitmas Story called 'Death Valley'.I grew up in the 80's watching that film. It usually was shown on weekend basic cable channels. Had Wilford Brimley in it as well.

Having recently been diagnosed as autistic, I'm seeing this movie in a completely different light now. And boy does it rub me the wrong way when Jaby says that Jovie can do better and can't be that desperate. Even though Buddy isn't meant to be autistic, there are a LOT of parallels, and that comment feels like there's a bit of internalized ableism there.

How does Die Hard qualify as a Christmas movie in the first place, much less a favorite Christmas movie?!?! That is very surprising! Not the endearing nostalgia of A Christmas Story or the life lessons of It's A Wonderful Life or even a timeless classic like A Christmas Carol or something unique like The Ref. No, Die Hard, which has what to do with Christmas, exactly??
@gerryortiz63845 ай бұрын
There's A LOT that makes "Die Hard" a Christmas movie. First, the score of the film samples Christmas classics like "Winter Wonderland" and "Ode to Joy" but at a lower pitch and slowed down to fit the tone of the movie. Moreoever, when the limo driver is pulling up to the protagonist's destination, we're offered meta, self-aware dialogue that reflects the film's intention. At this point, some people in the audience (someone like you) might be thinking "Why did you make me watch this, we should've seen a Christmas movie" to which the people that brought them likely said "This IS a Christmas movie." This sentiment is reflected in the dialogue as the limo driver plays Hip-Hop music. The protagonist John McClane says "don't you have any Christmas music?" and the driver responds "this IS Christmas music!" as Run-DMC starts rapping about running into Santa Claus. The most notable criteria for determining a Christmas movie is that 1) it NEEDS to take place during Christmas, 2) Christmas HAS to be necessary to the plot, that is, the story couldn't happen at any other time, 3) Something Christmas-related has to be a part of the main character's motivation, and most importantly 4) the movie has to have the intention of being a Christmas movie. Number 4 I've already explained. But I go further... The movie uses character dialogue to clarify its intentions as a nontraditional Christmas movie. Plus, the score highlights these intentions by using timeless songs typically played during Christmastime. There's a blend of these as the cop Powell (played by Reginald ValJonhson, aka Mr. Winslow, lol) is leaving the building after his preliminary check. After he radios that there's no trouble, he sings a Christmas classic which serves a metaphor for the turmoil of the plot. The cop sings "Let It Snow!" about a blizzard forcing people to stay indoors (highlighting the hostage situation), but the metaphor extends to not only the dead body that falls (like snow falls) on his squad car RIGHT as he's singing it, but also the blizzard of bullets that follows as he tries to escape. Number 1 is obvious, the film takes place on Christmas Eve and early Christmas morning. For number 2, the pirates couldn't have possibly executed their plan at any other time because there are other companies at that building. There'd be no other time except an office Christmas party to hold the target company hostage considering almost no one else would be there. This is why they go floor to floor checking if there are any stragglers or late workers or parties/people left in the building, and group them all together or kill them like they did with security and maintenance. 3) This one ties into the first, the main character wouldn't be in the building, or even in town if not to meet his estranged wife whom he came to visit for Christmas (and his kids, ofc). Along these lines, throw in every one-liner or witty comment the protagonist makes (albeit to himself most of the time) are related to Christmastime: "Welcome to the party, pal!" (which incidently happens after the dead body "snows" on the cop car (bc the protagonist dropped him)... or when the protagonist puts a Santa hat on the first dead pirate and writes "ho ho ho" with the dude's blood...and the one that EXPLICITLY summarizes the main character's initial intentions: "Come out to the coast...we'll have a few laughs" obviously mocking how his estranged wife convinced him to come over for the holidays. These are the main reasons "Die Hard" is so highly regarded not just as a "Christmas movie" but a technically sound masterpiece. The film does without the cliché, touchy-feely, "everything is awesome" Christmas vibe because, to quote the show "Friends" --> "even though it's Christmas, people still die." Christmastime is full of laughter and cheer and all kinds of nice stuff for SOME people. The fact that it's Christmas doesn't stop wars (maybe a truce, but you're still stuck on the battlefield with deplorable conditions all around you). And Christmas doesn't magically heal all the people in hospitals, nor does it (and now this is the point the movie's trying to make) stop anyone who wants to do harm from doing so.

Jaby''s convinced me. They need to do this exact same story with Will Ferrel as an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I just feel like "Character" Larry would have so much fun with this. I don't know what you'd call it, but it needs to be made immediately. Also suggesting THE REF with Kevin Spacey and Dennis Leary for next year. My personal favorite Christmas movie, and easily one of the most underrated.
@dggydddy59 Жыл бұрын
The Ref. Yes! Abso-freakin-lutely! I don't get why no one watches The Ref. Maybe next year. So many of the reactors watch the same movie within a few weeks of each other, like this year several of them suddenly pulled out Trading Places from out of nowhere. And that has zero to do with Christmas, unlike The Ref.
