Exactly my thoughts. There was a bit too much action between Shang-Chi and Wenwu. A bit more dialogue between them would have made the sacrifice of his father mean a lot more. I really would have liked if they fought the demon together and Wenwu dies protecting Shang-Chi somehow so that Shang-Chi has a personal motivation to kill the demon. After Wenwu's death..it all felt like yeah whatever kill it and get it over with. Plus I really wanted a bit more of Tony Leung, he was breathtaking in this movie.😂♥️

@@vasudevdehariya1269 well, i mean Wenwu is the mandarin, a pure evil guy from the comics, so maybe they thought that trying to pull him towards the good guy's side in the end would go against his evil guy trope from the comics and that wont do the character justice So they didn't let him go too much towards the sympathetic way

And totally agree with you on the ending. I feel like the movie spent 90% of its runtime to build up one of the MCU's most fantastic antagonists, giving him a better treatment than most protagonists (at the very least, he was definitely a much more interesting character than the titular character Shang Chi himself, to the point I feel like this movie should have been called Wen Wu, the Legend of the Ten Rings), and just as we were going to have a catharsis from him, he just got tossed aside in a single shlurp and well, he's now irrelevant to the story, so "Oh No! Anyways... " To me, at my first viewing, that moment robbed the whole movie of its dramatic and emotional tension that it spent the rest of the movie building, and I was PISSED at it so much so that I had a very hard time getting pulled back in the movie for its final battle (even though it looked spectacular, by that point it had lost its soul, to me). Don't get me wrong, the final father-son fight was great, but needed maybe just one or 2 more minutes at the very end, linger a bit longer, or give WenWu (this fearsome 1000 year old warlord who have had the whole world under his boot for the past millenia, and who up until now, was the ultimate antagonist of everyone in the movie), a bit more to do against the Dweller in darkness than just being captured right from the get go and get tossed aside in a single shlurp ! Like, for example, after seeing the big boss creature breaking free from the gate and still usurping his wife's voice, he'd angrily lash at the monster "you dare mock the memory of my wife ?" before exploding some of the creature's wings and tentacles with his 10 rings for a solid minute or 2, before the creature, scared of his power, evades him and aims at his defenseless son, prompting a surprised WenWu to go save him, and being captured in his stead, like what happened in the movie, before finally getting sucked dry. That would have made more justice to all the hard work Tony Leung did prior to that moment, and added more weight to his character's end. (That, or indeed a teamwork between Shang Chi and Wen Wu, each having 5 rings, would have been badass too, before Wen Wu finally got captured and sucked), And then, just a few seconds more of Shang Chi lingering on Wen Wu's body, with some parallel flashbacks with him holding his dying mother while he couldn't do anything to save her, and now living the exact same thing with his father, just as he managed to bring him back to sanity... that would have been such an impactful trauma that would bring such a catharsis, and make his character arc much more more powerfully tragic to match up the tragedy lived by WenWu (who's been, up until now, arguably the most tragic character of the whole movie, overshadowing his kids by a mile). That would have really powered up Shang Chi to face the new big threat with vengeance in his heart, becoming an actual Avenger, and bringing him so much more personal stakes and gravitas to take on the big monster that killed his father. Finally, I feel like the movie's ending was cut at the wrong time. The movie should have ended at the zoom out of Ta Lo, when everything was done and everybody was paying respect to the departed, with all the lanterns on the lake, and the dragon dancing with it. That would have ended the movie with a beautiful and poetic last image. Instead, they had to make it a joke with the whole final bar scene, and once again, it undermined all the seriousness of the final battle (they just lost half the village, AND Shang Chi's father !) I feel like the entire scene + what we saw in the mid-credit scenes could have been put together as the mid-credit scene altogether. But well, that's only my take on it. Ultimately, I still loved the movie enough for going to watch it 3 times (and possibly a 4th time with my sis and my nephew), and like Jaby, I actually surprisingly enjoyed it more at the second viewing. I guess knowing what comes next kinda mentally filled the blanks in our minds, so when the Dweller came out, it didn't felt as jarringly disconnected as the first viewing, and the flow of the story somehow was smoother. Also, something I didn't quite catch on the fist viewing is that Wen Wu got captured by the Dweller because he actually used his rings to propel himself to push his son away, otherwise Shang Chi would have been the one to be captured. For the first time in his millenia of existence, Wen Wu used the rings not to attack and destroy or as a personal shield, but to protect someone else than himself. Ironic that it cost him his life, but that was his redemption act, I guess, and when I finally caught that on second viewing, that made me actually enjoy the ending more rather than get pissed at it like in my first viewing.

This is really long so I only read the first group but I don't think Wen Wu himself is the big threat as much as the 10 Rings Are, Like Hydra x1000. The organization is more important than the figure himself aka Red Skull/Hydra and Wen Wu/Ten Rings

No reviewer has mentioned it yet but there was no real villain in the movie. Mandarin had no evil plan. Things he did to shang chi was may be just for passing the mantle. Whole plan of mandarin was to bring back his wife. And that is because he was possessed/ misguided whatever. Soul sucking demons - where did they come from and why are they there - Never Explained.

Love the Pitch meetings! The fact that Simu loved that one is icing on the cake! As for the Joseph Campbell bit, if I remember well, the character his book mentions is the mentor. Doesn't matter if it's a sage, a hermit, or a teacher, it basically is a more experienced and wise character that guides the main hero whenever he's lost. In this movie, that role would fit Michelle Yeoh's aunt Nan much more than Trevor.

What I think is kind of interesting with the MCU, is that as much as there is silliness in it (which Ryan George manages to pick up, on pretty much all of it), there is very little actual *stupidity* there. The things the Pitch Meeting videos for the MCU bring up are silly and over the top, but very rarely are there things that make you say "Yeah, that's really dumb." KInd of impressive with that massive amount of movies. Also, I find that quite a lot of people who make videos to call out stupidity in the MCU, tend to exaggerate, show that they haven't been paying attention, or just straight up lie. There are instances of stupidity there, but not as much as I think some content creators would like there to be.

Giving Wenwu a bigger redemption moment makes no sense. They make clear from the start that he's a ruthless conqueror who accidentally finds "love" in a very psychopath way where as soon as he looses her he goes back to his murderous path treating his children a weapons. He didn't suddenly become a good person, he just found something better to do because he was bored of all the repetitive fighting.

I agree with you that Shang Chi’s father’s death was just wasted, and you suggested two of the many ways it could have been done with much more plot tension and emotional impact. Tony Leung was magnificent in the role and I’m sorry the story will continue without him. This Shang Chi movie is a favorite of mine, and I like it better than many of the more generally popular Marvel movies. I hope that the sequel that Simu Liu is saying will happen does it justice and builds on the first in an interesting way. That will require that the terrible writing that has ruined many movies the last few years is sidestepped somehow.

I am just not a big fan of the Marvel single character movies. Iron Man 1 was the sickness and Winter Soldier was incredible. But Ant-Man, Black Panther, Shang Chi, Black Widow and so on just didnt do anything for me. Even Spider-Man did nothing. No Way Home was great. Not only because of the super obvious of Tobey and Andrew.. It was the frist movie where Tom Holland actually was Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Without the "with great power" line his origin is just simply incomplete. It is like having Batman without an alleyway. Maybe I am being too strict, it just never struck me as genuine. Those movies are 100% needed for the Avengers, I just thought they sucked. I love all of the characters from previous stuff, so I was willing to ignore it for the team ups. Widow got done dirty. Having her movie come out after she was canonically dead was just wrong. Her movie had no stakes. She was already dead.

If ScreenRants deserved any of this credit you would see this level of brilliance in their other work. It isn't there, half the time it's compilation videos of things they Google or read on the DVD box cuz it's quite obvious they didn't watch the movie they talk about. And the other half are "things you've missed" listing 19 things everyone noticed and 1 thing that's a combination of speculation and personal interpretation that can't actually be confirmed to be what they actually claims it is. It's not accurate, it's rarely correct and it's definitely not funny. There is no way in any time-line where Ryan has a finger involved in anything ScreenRants makes aside from the actually funny comedy stuff.

i think that too i dont know why it is so hyped, the beginning is really good but ending just ruins the whole movie for me.

@@Scribbly_Chi_10 it was wayy too childish and all the Chinese Culture stuff they show is so much overused in so many movies it's no fun at all. Also I didn't liked Simu Liu's acting, the guy has no expressions the entire movie. Black Widow was an awesome movie but people hated it and liked this not so good Shang Chi

Same man. Not sure why people are really hyping it up. The first half didn't make any sense to me. Why did the father sent so many assassins to get the pendant from Shang Chi and also sent a letter from the sister to lure Shang Chi to Macau. Lot of things didn't make sense to me actually. The fights in the beginning are fun to watch though. And Tony Leung is the saving grace for me.

@@koushikvemuri3130 exactly it looked dumb things didn't made sense. The movie didn't really had a plot direction and just pulled out anything they can to connect the dots. Shang Chi's mother died in such a lame way just by some thugs. I mean they could have made her death much more impactful but no a bunch of random thugs killed her

I love Ryan's pitch meetings but he got a lot of info wrong in this one. Mandarin was 1000 not 4000 and he wasn't behind Trevor slatery, he was just the inspiration for the idea of the iron man 3 Mandarin.

Marvel movies are going to be just alright, mostly has been. Like Jaby said this movie had the potential to go to another level, like many other marvel films, but they just don't. It's just that they are not making movies anymore, just products. Hence what Scorsese said these movies aren't "cinema". If you look up how Marvel movies are being made, you can clearly see that there is no "director's touch" to these movies, they are controlled by the studio. As long as the general audience love the jokes and action and the studio makes money, which unfortunately is going to go on for a while, Marvel won't reach it's full potential.
