As much as I think Crystal Skull was carp and Dial of Dysentery looks terrible...... At this point I really think people need to grow the effing frak up about this. The trilogy is the trilogy, it still stands as a great set of films by itself without reference to anything else. If a bad new film is truly spoiling your childhood then you might have serious memory problems that need addressing more than obsessing over this sludge. Let it die and just ignore it - eventually Hollywood will tire of this phase and go back to actually trying to entertain people that they know want to see this stuff rather than their idealised 100% attendance audience that will never exist.

It's pretty easy to just dismiss this as "yea, whatever Disney" and move on. That said, these Pitch Meetings are always hilarious anyway.

They tried to the EXACT same thing with star wars. Made solo a failure made luke a failure, bought in a Mary sue with rey who had no character development and was unlikeable. Same with waller bridge. Totally unlikeable character replacing the character we all wanted to see.

In fact, that would be a callback to the original indiana jones, where the nazis had incomplete directions on how to build the staff, leading them to dig in the wrong place. If she mistranslated the instructions, then the nazis would be off on a wild goose chase again. More wacky adventures of those keystone-cops-like nazis.

@@Rah1381I actually don’t hate the third Mummy movie. It’s definitely not as good as the preceding films but I had fun with it. It’s biggest flaw I think is recasting Evie I think it would’ve been a stronger film if they’d killed her off instead. Bring in more of a rift between Rick and Alex and it’d give Rick an existential crisis. I think it’d be a more compelling movie.

They do have de-aging tech for voices - Disney used it for Mark Hamill in his Mandalorian and Boba Fett appearances. His voice in those shows is all computer generated. So they certainly could've de-aged the voice, if they had wanted to. Probably didn't want to spend the money.

I haven't seen the movie, but my question is, who is more the villain, the Nazis, or Helena Shaw? From everything I'm hearing, Helena Shaw is one of the main villains. She steals from Indy. She has employed this kid as a thief. She is dealing on the black market. Sounds like she could get Indy off the charges of killing his friends, but doesn't. Then you add that she is completely insufferable on top of that. THIS IS THE PERSON THEY WANTED TO HAND THE TORCH OFF TO???

Remember is Crystal Skull how at the end of the film the fake out teas his son taking the mantle then Indy grabs his hat like “nuh uh i’m indiana” then walks away. Love that ending. Ya, you can feed samples of a voice into an AI generator and then apply that voice to an existing voice sample (like they have videos of AI Squidward singing The Sound of Silence). So you could feed all the voice lines from the first 3 Indiana Jones movies and perhaps some of his other films from that era, and then have the AI generate younger Indiana Jone's voice over old Harrison Ford reading the dialogue. So it's an AI of young Harrison Ford's voice following the template of Old Harrison Ford reading the dialogue. Since they have all the same vocal tics it probably would have come out quite good.

I’m late to the party here but I just wanted to agree with Jaby, stop going bigger. Films in general today keeps trying to raise the stakes (time travel, multiverses, skybeams, aliens, superpowers, etc,). Shang Chi is an example of taking a small cool character (that only really specializes in martial arts) & adding demons, giant creatures, dragons, cgi bamboo forests, power beams, etc

Listen, a fall from grace archetype can work if done well. Die Hard 3 pulled it off pretty decently with John Mclane being a drunk and in a bad realtionship with his wife even though everything was going well in Die hard 2. But the reason why Die Hard 3 worked was because John was still competent. Sure he was a bit more bitter than the other two movies but he was still John fucking Mclane. The movie didn't suddenly go "Okay so John sucks here's Zeus who you should like more" instead it went "Hey John's on hard times so you can feel some sympathy for him and here's Zeus being a great character as well" Not to mention the fact that by the end of the movie John tries to fix his troubles as well

Look i know many people will see these movies because of nostalgia but im always against bringing back great near perfect sagas like Indiana Jones and The Matrix. Its like Hollywood lost its magic and cannot bring us new stories and new characters without having to bait the audience with successful names. Leave classics in the past (and perfect) !

Disney have waste their budget plan from past live action movies such as John Carter of Mars and Lone Ranger, both released around 2012 or 2013, included their live action The Nutcracker where no one won in the box office results. I agree I don't like the way Lucas film is trying to pass the torch to other characters they don't even try to make them interesting like a good example would be Ghostbusters afterlife follow that blueprint that actually made the characters interesting and when it was time to pass the torch it was well executed

Didn’t Disney use an AI algorithm to create Mark Hammel’s voice as younger Luke Skywalker? If so, why didn’t they just use that on Harrison Ford for this film? The only thing I can guess is that maybe with Mark Hamill that you needed to use the older voice and then modulate it to make it sound younger and because he’s a voice actor, as well as an action actor, he was able to pitch it pretty close to the finish product so that there was a little work to be done to get it to the sweet spot? I don’t know.

I'm totally on-board with the idea that the movie should have been smaller and more focused (as you said, three set pieces and some banter in between, and that's it). Movies are way too bloated nowadays. Less is more.

@@Daniel__Nobre because smaller means the writing is more crucial. and writing is what all those modern movies and shows fail at drastically. the effects a great mostly, the acting is fine. the cinematography is good as well. but the writing is trash.

There was a great movie called “My Fellow Americans “ with James Gardner and Jack Lemmon as two old ex-Presidents who’s plane crashes because someone in the secret service is trying to kill then and they have to travel across America to Washington DC and it is a great, hilarious and fun movie. Indiana Jones and Salah and Marion doing something like that would have been AWESOME!! But no, Kathleen Kennedy has to do a wish fulfillment self insert yet again and attempt to pull yet another bait and switch and it failed. Rightly so!

13:24 I think it could work. But Disney keeps doing it in the worst way possible. They never just pass the baton, they want you to know how much better the new characters are than the old ones, so they don't pass the baton from one good character to the next, they always do it where the old characters are sad and bad and incompetent and broken so you immediately see how much better the new characters are. The problem isn't really passing the baton, the issue is that they always do this with massive disrespect to the old characters. "Look these old characters you like suck, like these better new ones instead, idiot" is the message Disney keeps sending.

The "Extreme Ghostbusters" cartoon series from 1997 actually did that "passing the baton" rather well (both in the opening episodes *and* in the ending ones) and that show wasn't even that stellarly written! People apparently just knew how to do it properly and with respect to the characters.

The people at Disney and Lucasfilm wouldn’t know good writing if they saw it. Indiana Jones had some mystical elements in them, but it was always about possessing those artefacts and fighting over them, until recently. Now it’s all about whatever crazy idea they pull out of their ass. It used to be about archaeology and adventure, and everything felt plausible.

Caravan of Garbage and The Weekly Planet is hosted by James Clements and Nick Mason. Two very funny Aussies who are very entertaining when talking about movies. I used to listen to them a lot but my listening petered off early pandemic and unfortunately I haven't gone back to them since. Glad to hear they are doing well.
