What's amazing is that Debra Winger was cast as Dottie originally -- the actors all went through training camp together before filming began, and Winger trained with the Chicago Cubs for three months. But in the end, she felt that Madonna was more of a pop star than an actress and considered her casting to be a publicity stunt. Geena Davis was brought in at the last minute but it helps that she is a natural athlete and fit into the role perfectly. How good an athlete is Davis? During the 1996 Olympics she was inspired by the archery competition. She wanted to try it out, so in her late 30s (four years after this movie) she began training as an archer. She was good enough that, at age 41, she was invited to the US Olympic Trials, barely missing out on qualifying for the 2000 Olympic games.
@JV-xf9ry6 күн бұрын
Yes Gina Davis is a good athlete. As a long time coach of the game, I always find myself evaluating the actually on-film play. For a Hollywood movie it’s pretty good. You can tell they put a lot of effort into learning the game. I’d be willing to bet many of the women outside the main stars have played baseball extensively. Many of them look very comfortable and mechanically sound on the field. However, Modona and Gina Davis have terrible swings. Earlier in the movie they show Modona getting a hit to the fence. No way that swing puts a ball to the fence. Aside from those few small critiques I love this movie. The all American women’s baseball league was a part of American history and a part of baseball history that was important. I loved watching this movie with my mom especially. She grew up during this era. There are so many great lessons in this movie. One of the best is “if it wasn’t hard everyone would be doing it.” Great lesson. Also, as a coach I have been where Tom Hanks was when they are coming off the field and he’s very upset with one of the players for routinely missing her cutoff throws. I have lived that frustration for 33 years as a coach. And the scene where he’s taking a picture of Betty’s injured thigh is a classic. Whenever a kid has a nasty injury like that, the others always crowd around to get a better look at it. They think it’s cool.
@bibliophilelady61065 күн бұрын

Great reaction! The age-old debate about Dottie dropping the ball on purpose. My opinion, was she didn't. Just wasn't her style, and she wouldn't do her team that way. She wanted her sister to earn it. You can see the "oh shit face" Dottie has when she sees Kit running at her. She wasn't expecting that. She got hit hard and dropped the ball. Kit earned it. But even thiough she lost, she was still of course happy for her sister. So in a way, it was a win-win for Dottie despite the loss.
@that.ll_do_pig7 күн бұрын
I agree. Some people use the fact that she held on to it previously as proof that she would never drop the ball with Kit but I think it's the opposite, it shows just how bad Kit wanted it and how hard Dottie was hit. They also say that because she's smiling watching Kit be happy with her victory, it's also proof it was intentional. I think that's a bit obtuse. Of course Dottie is going to smile and be happy for her sister earning her win after all the drama, even though it means her team didn't win. She's proud of her sister.
@erikchristopherkc7 күн бұрын
she didn't drop it on purpose. she wouldn't have given the tips on high fastballs if she wanted her to beat her own team. Dottie came back for Game 7 bc she is a real competitor. I never understand the debate about this.
@heidiv54887 күн бұрын
Oh, she totally dropped it on purpose. It was a shitty thing to do to her teammates, but I guess her sister meant more to her than baseball. And whiny Kit never admitted to herself that her sister sacrificed the championship for her.

Dottie also had taken a very rough spill the batter before into their dugout onto concrete. She was clearly hurt by that. 54:00 - It's in the dialogue at least twice that Kit likes the high ones and can't hit them: At the very first flashback scene, Kit is going to bat. Dottie says "No high ones." "I LIKE the high ones," Kit retorts. "Mule!" "Nag!" And then right at this point, Dottie says: "High fast ones, can't hit them, can't lay off them." It is in the dialogue. It's letting you know the situation. Dottie is not letting Kit off in the slightest: she is playing into Kit's weakness and setting up for her to fail. She is making Kit earn it, every bit of it, including needing to duck when she fires a ball straight at her. At 54:36 you can see Dottie definitely didn't expect this, or want it.

There is such a deep strong human aspect in this movie, because when you see a young impulsive person most people just see that, and when you see an older person the same, but most people dont realize that we all grow in more than one way between those 2 stages in life. This movie shows that in a very simple, emotional way that just hits my heart everytime I see this movie. The best movies about sports are the ones in which the sport itself is not the actual soul of the movie, but something we all as humans recognize in ourselves is.

The seine where John Levitz yelled at the cow to " Shut up " was because they kept trying to do the seine like 3 times and it kept mooing so John asked Penny Marshall what should i do? And Penny said " Tell him to shut up " jokingly and he really did it and they loved it.😂😂😂😂

@@SammyRebbo "Scene" like a movie scene is not the same as "seen," a variation of "see" and "saw." What are you talking about?

@ If I could upload that Star Trek gif where Data throws the joke ball at the other character and it goes by them and they put their hand up late I would.

In Texas the fine arts curriculum is considered enrichment and is required for all school districts that serve grades K-12. This includes dance class.

My favorite part about the Marla recruitment, is that Dotty and Kit didn't even look at each other before setting their bags down. They each knew the right thing to do, regardless of what the other one thought or was going to do.

Omggggg my favorite movie!!! Yes! This is such an amazing movie of sisterhood. I love how they got such amazing actors who looks like the younger versions.

Yes, this film was "Hollywood" all the way, but these young women were worthy of Hall of fame recognition! Heartwarming.❤

Penny Marshall was such an underrated filmmaker - this is arguably her finest hour. Fun and heartfelt with great cast and Hanks having a field day. Jon Lovitz is a quiet riot (I met him once in college for a film junket and he's surprisingly very low-key & humble which is a 180 from his usual bombastic characters). RE: Baseball films - I highly recommend you see THE NATURAL starring Robert Redford. Fun watch ladies (and the bare shoulders for you both - yes please *sigh*).

Great reaction ladies as always ladies! BTW, I am not sure if you recognized her, but the actress that played "All the Way Mae" is Madonna! My favorite line in the movie is "By the way, I loved you in the Wizard of Oz" - lol

Penny Marshall did a wonderful job directing the movie. Her husband plays Harvey the chocolate man

Damn. I get that you guys have to cut up the movie. But yall leapfroged right over Kit being traded. That is a integral moment that needs to be highlighted. Also, Stillwell getting hit with the glove is always needed in reactions.

Yeah, sadly, the edited version always has to get cut in some way, but I think the uncut version is on the Patreon?
