According to Richard Donner, Mel Gibson improvised the opening scenes in which his character expounds his conspiracy theories to a succession of passengers. Also, thank God finally somebody reacted to this movie and I am glad that it was you, Cassie.

Since it seems not many people get the reference, the Warner Bros cartoon clips that keep showing when Jerry is having episodes and is given "gravy" is a cartoon called 'Chow Hound' where a dog uses a mouse and a cat to do his scam of convincing home owners they need a cat to chase a mouse he plants and is given the reward the cat gets in the form of pet food, steak and so on, and the dog's constant complaint is "What, no gravy!?" before he slaps the cat and mouse. By the end, when the dog gets his big score and eats a whole butcher shop he buys, as he is on the hospital table very fat and unable to move and two steps away from a heart attack, the cat and the mouse show up and remind him "We didn't forget the gravy." and basically force feed it to the dog. The reason for the three name thing is to distinguish infamous killers from the average Joe who might have the same name. Back in the day, lynch mobs were a major thing. When there was a manhunt, they didn’t want to have people trying to shoot their neighbor named Lee Thomas Oswald.

The horse farm used is in Lionshare Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut. The facility is owned by United States Equestrian Team member Peter Leone-who coached Julia Roberts through the scene at movie's end, where she gallops her horse across a field while Mel Gibson's character looks on longingly from a vehicle driving on a nearby road.

"Jonas has no affiliation...", made me laugh :) If you're into historical dramas, there's an old British miniseries with Derek Jacobi (as the titular roman character) called "I, Claudius" from 1976... it has various actors that might be recognizable by many such as Sian Phillips, John Hurt, Brian Blessed aaaand... Patrick Stewart as Sejanus, Emperor Tiberius' right hand man. By the way, maybe others have mentioned, the movie playing in the theater where Jerry hides is "Ladyhawke" (1985, also from Richard Donner), a pretty good film with Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick. Also, check out "Payback" (1999) for a grittier and harder character by Gibson :)

This is one of my favorite movies of all time (and no, I’m not a conspiracy theorist 😉). I watch it every couple years and it is always great. I think it is possibly Mel’s best role. It is not easy to play a person with those extreme mental issues and he does it SO well. And Julia and Patrick are great as well. I just love it.

Conspiracy Theory is a solid 8/10, anyone who rates it lower is either plain cynical or else they didn't understand it. Yeah parts of it are kinda crazy but that's literally the title of the movie. From the initial premise, they made something very strong, the love story is complex but actually makes sense, and the ending puts you through all the right emotions without feeling like it just pulled the rug from under you. I haven't watched it in full TOO many times, but definitely more than once, and I love it. Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts at their peak.
