This movie is a lot of fun. And even beyond the whole predicting the control of society thing that we might be dangerously heading to; They also predicted little things like self driving cars and even video calls that didn't exist at the time the movie was made.

Even as a teen I had a crush on Sylvester Stallone and this movie was a big reason for it. We as a family loved to watch it, then I watched it with hubby, and now we watch it with our kids. My dad ran into Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone in Louisville Ky when this movie was coming out. He said Sylvester and Wesley were two of the most jacked dudes he's seen. This was the golden era of action herod for sure.

This film ages like fine wine with each passing year. It's funny to think that when it came out, we thought there was no way we'd live to see it come true, but time so often proves us wrong. One thing that occurred to me recently is the behavior of the people of San Angeles, who are basically stand-ins for the Eloi from The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. The few of them who actually interact with the main characters are basically NPCs who don't really seem to have any agency, initiative, resourcefulness, or personality. They're completely provided for like prized purebred animals are cared for by wealthy aristocrats, and it's made clear throughout the film that they sort of wander around in a lobotomized state as though they've had all the pugnacious qualities that humans possess totally nerfed from their personalities. And it's not just a few people, it's endemic in the population, even the police force. Like clipping the wings of a bird, filing the teeth down on a dog, declawing a cat, etc. The animals aren't really handicapped, and it doesn't radically alter their health, but it does alter their natural state to the point that they can't function genuinely as they're meant to. Makes you start to wonder how a whole population could come to be this way in a supposed utopia, especially when you realize nothing is an accident in a centrally controlled society.

It's so weird how this movie was seen as just another Stallone action film when it came out, but now has become very relevant to the time we live in. I'm glad you two dug it, though. It's one of my top favorite Stallone movies. Not too long ago, he said he's interested in doing a sequel, so I hope it happens. I'd love to know what became of that society after Cocteau died and the cryo prison was destroyed. Obviously, it would have to take place in the 2060s since Sly is much older now.

There was a panel in the comic book adaptation that shows Spartan reuniting with his daughter. You can actually see him protecting her during the shoot-out in the sewer with Phoenix. She had joined up with Friendly.

- This movie predicted so many things that passed from being a goofy movie to serious science-fiction. - John Spartan's daughter is supposed to be one of the underdwellers (as explained in a deleted scene). You can see her in a blink-and-you-miss-it scene, she's the woman Spartan pushes to safety when Phoenix and his gang start the shootout. - You can also catch a glimpse of Jack Black a minute earlier, too. - The 3 seashells are a creator's joke and they mean... absolutely anything, writers just wanted to tease the audience. Nowadays, this has become another prediction come true (in a way), since we use exactly 3 buttons in our smartphones and other simplified interfaces.

There was actually a deleted scene where Spartan found his daughter living underground with Frienldy's people. The girl he shielded during the fight underground was actually supposed to be his daughter but they ended up cutting that out along with a scene of Phoenix killing Zach Lamb before he stole the car. I honestly wish they'd left both scenes in or at least given us an extended cut or something.

I looked it up. The 3 seashell ring worked as a scooper. Basically you would scooping your behind instead of wiping. His daughter was in but was cut out. Spartan was holding his daughter in the tunnels when Phoenix started shooting.

I'm so happy you guys played the "my boggle" line that's one of my favorite lines in this entire movie! the Sylvester Stallone Arnold Schwarzenegger joke is put in the movie because of their real life rivalry Back in the Mid to late 80s and early 90s they both were competing with each other constantly with movies. So the director decided to actually add this as a very crazy joke that has some real life implications of course this movie was made before Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor of California so yes definitely some future predictions in this movie. Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary were also in a movie together - Two if By Sea, which is a pretty good RomCom. Stallone and Schneider were in Judge Dredd together - which is a not so good adaption of the comic (other than the look). Urban did it much better later in Dredd.

43:17 The rat study was an experiment to find the effects of population density on behavior in rats and mice. The rats and mice in John Calhoun's experiments initially got along when the population was low and their living conditions were not crowded. They did not self destruct because all their needs were met. The self-destruction was due to a high population in a small space.
