@@Lmwpittwhere's your evidence to back that statement up? Because every mention of the ancient ones basically correlates to the audience. As was said before they want the blood and gore, but they also want the nudity. If the ancient ones are not a direct metaphor for the audience and are watching the events unfold using some form of omniscience they would be able to see nudity whenever they want, but because it is a trope in horror movies the audience normally expects some form of nudity. Additionally why would the old gods/ancient ones have any interest in seeing nudity in the first place?

There was a hint that Marty wasn’t really dead. The reason the facility shakes when Marty “dies” is because the gods knew he wasn’t dead; which is predicated on the horror/action trope that if a death did not occur on screen, they probably aren’t really dead. Since we only saw him drug into the hole and blood fly up, the gods were letting them know that Marty didn’t die and they didn’t catch it. I love that little tidbit. This movie is filled with those. I’ve watched it every October since it came out and pick something new up every time I watch it. The overall metaphor of the movie where the gods are us and the facility is the production crew that is trying to please “us” based on what tropes are successful which we all presumably want to keep recreating. There is a lot of detail in the metaphor throughout the movie that you’ll see more and more of if you rewatch it.

During the lake scene, the only student not to jump into the lake is Marty, who remains fully clothed on the dock. This was partially due to Fran Kranz noticeably being in as good, if not better, shape than the other male students. In the commentary for the film, the writers joke that he was "ripped like muscular Jesus" and assert that if Marty were shown being that fit it would ruin the character. This is partly also why Marty wears baggier clothes than the other students.

As everybody points out here in the comments, "the Ancients" are a metaphor for horror audiences who want to watch the same old horror movie formula play out over and over and, if they don't get exactly what they want, get angry, rise up, and "end the world" (i.e. the movie fails and the franchise -- the world that the characters live in -- ends). BUT I'll also add that the people in the facility who are manipulating the show are metaphors for the filmmakers, trying to appease the audience by giving them exactly what they want, afraid to deviate from the formula (for fear of "the world" of the movie being ended). This is why Sigourney Weaver's character, e.g., is called "the Director." She's the metaphor for the director of the movie. Similarly, I think of the one guy in the facility as a writer or something, bc when the creative choices are made and the monster's picked (zombies), he's still kinda bummed like, "I just really wanted to see a merman." Oh well, maybe next production, buddy. And, ofc, the main cast of young folk represent the archetypal characters who have to be sacrificed in horrible ways to appease the horror audience, BUT they're also metaphors for the actors who play those parts in those movies; this is why there are so many references to things like Jules being made to dye her hair blonde to play her part as the promiscuous one, Hemsworth actually being smart and nice but being made to play an alpha male jock, and when the intended "final girl" indicates that she's not really a virgin, the Director is like, "We work with what we have" (i.e. the actual actress who plays the virgin doesn't have to actually be pure and virginal, she just needs to be someone the audiences believe fits the role). They're altered and made to fit into the role for which they've been cast, despite that role not fitting the RL person. Even a lot of the tropes that you called out and complained about are there intentionally. They're jabs at the formulaic tropes in horror movies, but this movie recontextualizes them. E.g. why is it always foggy/misty in horror movies? Because the directors are releasing pheromones into the environment to control the behavior of the characters. Why do people always use a weapon once and then throw it down? If you watch closely, after Dana stabs the one zombie in the face in the basement, one of the directors flips a switch on a console and you see a tiny spark of electricity zap her hand, causing her to throw the knife down. The tropes -- including the usually frustrating ones -- are all there in this movie, but not accidentally. They do dumb things bc they're supposed to do dumb things. They're being made to do the dumb things by the directors bc it's part of the formula. Oh! Also, idk if you two picked up on it, but the scenes of all the failed operations in other countries were references to other classic horror movies and genres either from or somehow related to those other locations. E.g. Stockholm (which showed a destroyed facility in the snow) is a reference to John Carpenter's The Thing (and is a double joke bc Kurt Russel's character keeps referring to the Norwegians in the movie as Swedes and then getting corrected); Kyoto shows the type of ghost horror movies that come from Japan, like Ringu (The Ring) or The Grudge, and the ghost that the little girls defeat is an obvious reference to Samara from Ringu; Buenos Aires (which shows a giant ape dead on the ground) is a reference to King Kong; Madrid shows a burning castle that looks like Dracula's castle; Burma, iirc, showed a Godzilla like monster; etc. It's such a smart movie on top of being super original. Originality which is impressive considering that they're both embracing and subverting the tropes at the same time. I remember going into the theater to see this the first time having ZERO idea what to expect (I hadn't seen a trailer or anything; just the movie poster outside the theater) and, man, it was a great ride. So glad you two enjoyed it!

Wtf would humanity do to stop giant, angry gods? They're not kaiju that you can just shoot missiles at or something; they're GODS. Either way, they missed the metaphor of the movie (that the Ancients represent the horror movie audience who gets angry and rises up to end the world the characters live in -- i.e. the franchise ends -- if they don't get exactly the formulaic story full of tropes and archetypes they want, the people in the facility represent the filmmakers trying to appease the audience by giving them those tropes without deviating from the formula, and the kids playing the archetypes represent the actors who are made to fit the role they've been cast for despite it not reflecting who they really are IRL), which leads to them trying to game out how the end "could've been better" if it just had the heroes defeat the monsters and survive.

Indeed. Leaving aside the meta narrative and taking the movie at face value, the people running the event aren't crazy or evil cultists - they are in fact acting upon accurate information and using the necessary method to save the world. Hell, it seems that the existential threat that the Ancient Ones pose even managed to unite humanity in a common purpose in which all the governments of the world collectively act as backups for each other. Now there might be some runaway-streetcar-type morality thought experiments that can be had about this, but the movie doesn't really have a villain in the sense of someone with a malicious motive.

I don't know why, I just find the connection to the stoner a bit funny. Fun fact: The censers used in Catholicism now uses common incense, but they used to burn Salvia Divinorum in them as a spirit cleansing aromatic. While the effects of salvia don't last very long and aren't exactly potent unless directly inhaled, breathing in the smoke could most certainly prime people to "feel the holy spirit", so to speak.

Yeah, it's always frustrating when reactors call that moment out before it happens, so it was nice to see people forget about the wall and actually experience the surprise of that moment as intended, especially people who understand movie structure enough to see a lot of things coming in movies. So many reactors I've watched spend 90% of every movie they react to trying to guess everything that's going to happen before it happens, which misses the point of why people watch reaction channels. People watch reactions to see other people react to the same moments that we enjoyed when we saw them the first time, not watch you demonstrate how clever you are about screenwriting by spoiling all the big moments for yourself before they happen. So, yeah, it was great to get to see reactors actually react to that moment for the first time in a while.

53:04 the point of the film is to make sense of horror movie tropes. It doesn't mean building a plot higher than that. What are anciens? the ruler of the world, And they want five sacrifices, which are the slasher stereotype. And thats it. There is no change,There is no renegotiation. It's just that, if it's not done everyone die. End. It doesn't to have an ending that is consistent with "humanity being saved", or that those in the laboratory did it thinking it was the easiest way to do. The gods ancient wants te sacrifices and see it because they are just that stupid. Because the god ancient represent the audience. That's why these gods want to see tits (which doesn't make sense) or gore or a murder scheme. They are the average viewer who doesn't want any changes. In the context of the film, this is unalterable, so that after watching it you are left wondering if it can be altered in real life. Because this is real. And is happening everyday with the expectation of the audience. And thats te point; not building a top story, o find out that they can get out (they won't get out alive). The movie just want to send the messages through the film. And thats the point, the messages. And the tribute.

MGM took over and, guess what, Tom Cruise was one of the executives. He gave notes but Goddard and Joss never used lol. They finally did the film Spring 2009 (between Dollhouse Season 1 and Season 2) with Joss directing second unit. Then, they waited again. It was probably Thor + Avengers coming what made Lionsgate to took over and they did a wide opening just few weeks before Avengers. Fun fact: Hemsworth did Thor audition during the film process. One of the control room techs was explaining that the ancient ones could be appeased by a simple sacrifice like throwing someone into a volcano but the ancient ones got bored over time and demanded more entertaining rituals.

Achara, sweet soul... LOL do you ever figure it out I'm not quite at the end yet .. LOL I'm hoping by the end when they spell it out again that you catch it . They can't survive till tomorrow cuz all of humanity will die they can't give just any blood sacrifice, like they said repeatedly they have to go in a certain order and only those people who were picked will count. And the little girl has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot she's just a monster LOL

"Kill him." When Dana stabs Sitterson and he slides down against the wall he was begging her to kill Marty. That's the thing about this movie that kinda sticks with me. Like the people that work for the institute aren't necessarily evil people. They have a job to do and they understand that if it doesn't get done the world ends. Everybody else in the world dies horrible, painful deaths. So even as he was dying he didn't care about that he was still completely focused on completing the ritual.

My favorite part is that Amy Acker basically reprised her role from Buffy series in this movie.

Oh, I love that you two knew a lot of the meta-language around horror movies going into this, the final girl, etc etc

I once read a fan theory that Dana was The Fool & Marty was The Virgin since she had an affair with a professor & we aren't told anything about Marty's love life, which would be a clever subversion of the character tropes like so much else in this movie.
@CapnLubeHandles17 күн бұрын
uhhh except for they literally address this when the big boss says "we work with what we have"
@keithbieberly644517 күн бұрын
Marty was "the virgin", Dana might have been "the whore" (affair with the professor) and Curt was actually "the scholar" (he knew those textbooks) I think the other two were similarly "miscast"
@King-mg7vy17 күн бұрын
@keithbieberly6445 , No, he wasn't. Marty was the Fool, a stoner who bits it for.....not being cognizant enough to understand what's going on. Dana was SUPPOSED to be the virgin....but it didn't work out. Jules wasn't originally the blonde bimbo, she dyed her hair, the dye was treated to MAKE HER the blonde bimbo, Hemsworth was a Scholar until he got to the cabin....get it now?
@adgato7517 күн бұрын
Nah. Marty fits the archetype of the Fool perfectly. Fool dies not mean dumb
@SantanicoDiabolical17 күн бұрын
@@adgato75not really, as Marty was the first one to see through the plot... not easily fooled.. not a fool.

I always love how everyone goes into this movie kinda KNOWING the Horror Tropes lmao yet half way into it, everyone just throws their experiences out the window, all because it shows how it all is controlled 😂 Suddenly it becomes something MORE lol

The basement scene was great. The different items are from different horror movies. The puzzle ball is a nod to hellraiser's puzzle box, ballerina wind up music box was maybe a reference to the conjuring, and you pointed out the evil dead stuff.

14:10 "I bet it tastes dusty" Funny you should say that. Anna Hutchison (Jules) said that to make the wolf look old and "dusty" the set crew sprinkled powdered sugar in its mouth and as gross as it seemed it really wasn't that bad.

In case nobody else has mentioned it the Ancients here are meant to represent us, the movie-watching audience. Especially the horror movie aficionados who constantly demand more and more 'blood sacrifices' to appease us.
