Man, Constantine is so underrated and yet it is one of Keanu Reeve's best movies ever. I am glad we are getting a sequel to it finally!
@raerth2 ай бұрын
I'm so conflicted as Constantine is one of my favourite comic characters, and this movie failed as a good movie about the comic-version Constantine. However, on its own it's a damn fine movie and does deserve a sequel. Keanu did make it his own, Tilda Swinton is as awesome as ever, and Stormare did an all-time iconic Lucifer. Matt Ryan did by far the best portrayal of John Constantine if people are just trying to satisfy comic nerds like me, but even I can't deny Keanu his dues on this movie.

@@raerth Agreed. I enjoyed this movie for what it is, but Keanu never felt right to me in the role. After seeing Paul Bettany's performance in "A Knight's Tale" back in the day, I always thought he would have been the better fit - even to this day. He had just the right amount of sarcastic wit and devil-may-care swagger in that film - it would have translated well had he been casted as Constantine. But his turn as Vision throughout the MCU has been pretty great too.

For as utterly scary and powerful as Lucifer is in the movie, it's not every day you get to see Satan/Lucifer not only as a NEUTRAL character, but ultimately the person who saves the day. I will often prefer Tom Ellis in most scenes, but Peter Storemare is absolutely PERFECT for this scenario. The fact that Storemare's off-hand line of "Busy, busy, busy....I need a vacation" became the entire plot of the "Lucifer" television series is just a great easter egg in itself.

The "Holy Water??" line in the hospital near the end, is all that remains of Michelle Monaghans role in the movie after an entire part of the plot was written out. Her character Ellie was to be John's grilfriend and there was a whole story arc with him finding out her true nature...so when he says to the group that he will deport them "...every one of you", he is particularly addressing her in that scene...as in, hes not going to show her any different treatment because of their relationship. However, it was decided that the dynamic of John having a grilfriend didnt really work and that his character worked better as a brooding loner...hence why he also never goes beyond flirty with Angela.
@infinitelybi20642 ай бұрын

You guys are my favorite reactors as a couple. Your actual discussions of the film are genuinely engaging and truly thoughtful. Usually, I’ll skip through reactor’s commentary as, quite often, it’s pretty shallow and simply an effort to “look informed”. I can’t help loving Kristin’s emotionality. I had three boys and always wanted a daughter. Vicarious living for me, you’re adorable (I’m sixty-four, don’t worry). Spot on regarding Tilda, her facial and physical portrayal of Gabriel was sooo well done. A movie ya’ll really might want to see with Keanu in a bit of a different role is, The Gift. It stars Kate Blanchett in the lead role and she does steal the show and give a fantastic performance. Last ‘beg’: Terri Gar passed this year and is in a quickly being forgotten art style film called, After Hours, with Griffin Dunne. You HAVE react to this. Very unrelated, one if those dark comedy, moody indie type films that the studio dudn’t know how to market and missed a chance to really get noticed. PLEASE consider it sometime, I promise you will love it and it is filled with nuance, characters and a subtle plot-with an unexpected ending. Kudos guys.

I think Constantine's issue was that he didn't believe that he deserves redemption himself.
@DocuzanQuitomos2 ай бұрын
For this film's continuity, we can partially make a case for that, in the way Keanu Reeves plays him (he doesn't want to die and fall in the hands of demons he has scorned over the years), but redemption seems for him such like an alien concept he has never fully grasped it, and now his time is running out, there is a bit of fatality in the idea he will never grasp the basics to check that box in time. As for the comic, that's not exactly the case: Constantine is a bit of selfish, bordering on asshole, guy: he originally is going to hell for facilitating the murder of several friends, his gf and a possessed child when his group of friends (amateur fans of the occult) tried to make an amateurish exorcism. That experience not only scarred him, it also left him cursed to always find trouble, and to have anyone he calls "friend" killed. That partially forces him to be a bit of an asshole to anyone, but also, after witnessing the horrors of beyond, he got an ever more cynic view of life where anything is worth it... if it means you can live another day.
