As a Mavs Fan I was initially upset and confused. I had to sit back and question the existence of my life. But taking a step back and looking at the roster now. Dallas is Dangerous af and I think Dallas is going to the finals as long as everyone stays healthy.

"This helps us compete for the next 3-4 years" = Nico thinks AD gives them a better chance of beating OKC and Denver than Luka does since he can overpower OKC and at least compete directly with Jokic. "This helps us compete in 10 years" = Nico thinks it's going to be hard to beat a fully-formed OKC, San Antonio, and possibly Houston if he's paying Luka $80M+ per year, given the limitations of the CBA. Both Nico and his predecessor made too many mistakes (KP trade, letting Brunson walk, etc.) that they don't have the assets/flexibility to build around a very expensive Luka. They may be better off if they position themselves to do some addition by subtraction in a few years (like how the Clippers let PG walk for nothing) to either build a winning team in the aggregate OR bottom out in a few years and start over. I think the only way this trade makes sense is if you buy into the idea that last year's finals team was going to be the best team the Mavs could reasonably assemble around Luka for the foreseeable future, and that the emerging West superpowers make it really hard to see a path to a title if you have Luka on a supermax. I don't know that I agree with that take (especially with Luka still being relatively young), but I can at least see it.
