Great video. You make it look so easy! I’m about to tackle changing the bearings and seals on my Getrag box. I’m a diyer and was wondering a couple of things. Is it the MFT gearbox oil you use to do some lubricating? And what torque settings do you use when putting the box back together?

I use a GL4 manual transmission oil, but they are not fussy and will work with most lubricants. Use the standard torque for the bolt size - google 'torque chart' for the figures.

@@Nogoslowly thanks for the quick reply. Will do that. Sorry one more question. If I can’t get access to a hydraulic press, is it possible to tap out the shafts ( using a press plate across both shafts). Assume would be a slow process compared to press of course.

@@benbrearley1980 You can try, and you might be able to do that. Some are not too tight and may move, but I suspect that the mass of the shafts are too high WRT the bearing and that they won't move without a really big hammer and the likely damage.

Good afternoon, I have a problem with the repair of the box, I changed the bearings and I have a noise like a ratchet. I've reopened and I don't see anything clear. I have seen in the video that the thickness of the clips is important, and you also close it without mounting the differential to make that measurement, why? I hope you can help me. The ratchet sound is likely to be the reverse shaft fitted the wrong way round. It should be the flat side towards the gears. Thecirclip thickness is not critical and if you fit the original, or same thickness, it will be fine. I fit the cover without the diff simply to make the gearbox easier to stand upside down when fitting the circlips.

I'm struggling with a PROB input bearing issue. clutch chatter goes away when the pedal is pushed down. I can't find the input bearing on google. Do you have a part number on the input bearing you pressed in? Also a website for these rare parts would be great, the mini community treats these getrags like throwaway items.

Do the shaft circlips control end float at all? I have currently fitted normal circlips which are a snug fit, but worried after seeing you measure them... 😕

Yes, The circlips are available in different sizes and are intended to remove end float, but it is not critical and most overhaul kits (that contain them) supply the thinnest size. As long as the circlip fits in the groove it will be OK.

Hello I have a Mini Cooper R50 Manual transmission 5 gears That I shift gears there is a noise of grinding only in second gear and a bit in third Do you know what the problem is? Missing chalk oil or something?

2nd gear synchro is usually the one that fails first. The synchro ring may have split, be worn out, or the dog gears may have become baldly worn. You can buy replacement 2nd gears kits but they are expensive. If other gears are giving trouble then it maybe cheaper and easier to find another gearbox.

Can I put a getrag five speed in place.of a 5 speed midland

Yes, it can be done but there's quite a lot that needs changed - Driveshafts, flywheel, and gearstick with cables.

If it is an early car it will be a Midland box. The Getrag was only fitted to a limited number of Cooper and Mini One cars

Why do you say that? IIRC it was a 2004, definitely a pre face-lift model. I believe the Getrag fitted to the 2007 was the 6 speed unit.

@@Nogoslowly oh, I have a 2004 model. 1.6 gasoline, 5 gear speeds. yeah is Midland. so strange that. they put different gearbox. it is matching this on my mini cooper? because I buy a second hand one for change but is Midland. maybe this one is stronger and I was thinking is a better gearbox..

The Getrag is a stronger box (except for 5th which we remove when used for racing). But a change from one to the other also needs the flywheel, clutch, driveshafts, and gearstick cables swapped.
