Though you could consider it a downgrade, I am swapping the 6 speed manual Cooper S transmission in my track car for a more authentic 5 speed to comply with Gridlife's Sundae Cup time attack rule set. You may be surprised how much weight this swap removes from the car.

Awesome you where able to weight the transmissions and flywheels. Have you been able to weight the r50 engine alone?

Didn't know they were lighter. Even the single mass. Didn't know they changed to a different 5 speed. That is cool. Is the cooper flywheel single mass stock? Great video - you've got a knack for this. Subscribed.

Hello Collin! Thanks for the excellent video. If I understand correctly, you recommend putting the "new" generation 2005-2006 NMD1014 Getrag 5 speed transmission system in the first generation Mini R50 (2002) (instead of the original NMD1011 Midlands 5 speed which is less successful, to say the least..) right? I'm also mostly looking for fun/mountain driving and reliability (I also use it daily mainly traffic jams). What parts exactly do I need to buy to make this conversion from 5 speed 2002 to 5 speed 2005/6 (besides the transmission itself)? And one last question. In terms of reliability / use with the MINI on the track and increasing the power of the engine in the R50 (NA), is there an advantage to the 6 speed and the clutch there compared to the 5 speed Getrag? The only things you should need to swap your early 5 speed out for a later Getrag 5 speed is the mount and the slave cylinder. Also, I don't imagine the 5 speed would be very good for a whole lot more power than what the R50 already makes. If you were going to start making more power I would use a 6 speed.

I'm currently looking for a manual to swap my r50 with and just wanted to ask which you thought was the best way to go the 5 speed or the 6 speed?

Having driven on both in the same car, I honestly think the 5 speed feels more appropriate for spirited driving, but the 6 speed is the safe bet for a daily driver, and it’s also definitely nice having the tall 6th gear for highway driving.

Collin mate, how have you got around any of the 5 speed box short comings. I'm building a track R50 and want to keep 5 speed, and having been looking for a source to just rebuild the whole lot as one. Oh and my god, watch your source of mtf94. So many crap "to spec" oils for mtf94.
