You said the winning would be split between 15 people, is there no lottery/state tax on the lottery there? Where im at they do the state tax and the lottery tax than when tax season comes around.

I’m sure Texas will take federal taxes out. Also they likely have a penalty for taking all the money up front. Let us assume $3M is lost to taxes and upfront payment fee. That would leave $4.5M to be split. That would give each person $300,000 back on their $100 gamble. Not too bad.

You can claim anything up $5,000+ without them automatically taking anything out. For example if I won $5,000 on a ticket that cost $20, and took it to claims office they deduct the amount the ticket cost (gross) and give me the $5,000 …. But if I won $5,100 + then they would take federal out automatically assuming the ticket wasn’t over $100. Does that make sense? Otherwise Texas doesn’t have state lottery tax or state income tax. It would be up to the invisibly to claim on federal taxes.
