I studied biology and from what I learned yes inbreading can be fatal. It increases the chances of the recessive traits getting expressed. I also want to emphasize here the importance of genetic counseling before any marriage, which I don't see as a common practice in Indian society.I often give more importance in matching the "kundlis" of the bride and the groom but neglect about tracing the family pedigree, which helps in tracing the hereditary diseases in a family. These diseases are really dangerous and can be fatal.

I am a South Indian woman. Inbreeding is still existing in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Kerala , the cousins are getting married. In Tamil Nadu , a girl can get married to her maternal uncle ( her mama ji ie that is her mother's brother). I have been trying to tell my relatives that inbreeding results in children with deficiencies. I request Indian government to stop inbreeding in South India. Interesting topic... My observation is, in North Indian Hindus (mentioning hindu as I am more familiar about it) usually there is no in breeding i.e, they choose different gotras .. But I do have some South Indian friends who have married to their cousins. Interestingly though, in these communities they marry to mother's side cousins and not father side.

And second thing is, cousins marriages are in south india are performed only in cross cousins not in parallel cousins. They marries in their maternal side not with paternal side. Marriages with parallel cousins are sin in both north and south india. And this thing is also decreasing day by day.😊
