Yes it is, but you should consider it would be 1) very hot and 2) very restricting or hard to breathe. People who wore corsets and many layers would always be fainting and collapsing from both the heat and not being able to breathe. The fashion back then was very beautiful though.
@kyrakeel4292
@kyrakeel4292 8 жыл бұрын
If the corset is fitted properly and not laced too tightly, you will find that breathing is no more difficult than it would be if you were wearing a bra- This is from my own personal gathering, as well. I have often worn a dress on 80+ degree days, and it does indeed get hot, but if one stays well hydrated I see no reason for faintness, other than it was the fashion for women to be dainty as such in the era.
@violetsilver6188
@violetsilver6188 8 жыл бұрын
though in those days the corset was much tighter due to a lack of understanding about the dangers of wearing a corset too tight, nowadays corsets are not usually designed to be too tight so the corset itself shouldn't be an issue. But always listen to your body if it doesn't feel right, don't wear it!
@kyrakeel4292
@kyrakeel4292 8 жыл бұрын
That's also another misconception- there are illustrations from the victorian era depicting what tightlacing did to the internal organs and ribs. Most women had naturally small waists as a result of restricting 2-4 inches smaller from a young age. Most corsets from the era had a 20 inch waist when fully closed- and most corsets were and are worn with a 1-2 inch gap in the back.

Kyra Keel ah ok, I honestly didn't know that they were aware of the dangers as I have always been told that they did it without knowing the consequences. Thanks for explaining this:)

shoes before corset! (it can be really difficult for people who might not have enough flexibility in their hips and legs to get shoes and stockings on with a corset limiting their mobility)

such a cool video! but for future references you're missing quite a few important pieces! first is the chemise a dress night gown like piece. Second, the bloomers or crotch-less drawers. Third the petticoat forth would come the corset and over the corset would come another petticoat "optional and depending on era" and then the camisole you used better known as a corset cover and over this would come all the clothes. You have a really neat video but I thought I would help fill in some holes you had I hope I helped!

Many women by this time were wearing combinations, an envelope chemise, or camisole and drawers instead of a chemise by this point. Also, the split drawers were going out of style by this point, and many women wore closed drawers.

This is not a Victorian silhouette, and the hat is very much Edwardian. I agree that the corset isn't a very appropriate, but we can't all have the most authentic wardrobe.
@Grace-mz6gx
@Grace-mz6gx 6 жыл бұрын
Celestias doll - You know what triggers me? When people say that Edwardian fashion is what's seen on Downton Abbey. King Edward VII reigned from 1901-1910. True, the term 'Edwardian' is applied from generally 1901 to the start of WWI, but, that doesn't mean fashion from the earlier era doesn't count. There are countless different silhouettes during what we classify as the 'Victorian Era' but that doesn't mean that a crinoline is any less Victorian than a bustle cage. Same goes with this.
@paulinetrivago.7540
@paulinetrivago.7540 5 жыл бұрын
@@Grace-mz6gx you wanna know what really triggers me? Is when people think Victorian clothing is 1730-1915. I've had many instances where they call edwardian victorian (which is more forgivable to the ones not in the know), Regency called Victorian, and especially rococo and baroque and all that called Victorian, the last one really irritates me

Videos FTW well that’s how it was. Until the advent of metal grommets, tightlacing wasn’t an option, because it would pull the eyelets right out of the corset. It was just a layer to add a little stiffening to create the right posture for the style, and to provide a bit of shape.

Sebastian James Dillingham not necessarily. According to Ruth Goodman's book "How To Be A Victorian" women of all but very high classes dressed themselves without the help of someone else. So shoes before corset is a realistic assumption to make about how Victorian/Edwardian women dressed themselves.

You're missing a few crucial steps & items. First to go on is the shift over which you put the corset, the suspenders go under the bloomers to hold up your stockings. Once shift, corset, stockings & bloomers are on, then the camisole is put on to protect your clothes from the corset & vice versa over which you would wear two or three petticoats on your bottom half then the outerwear goes on. Oh and your boots aren't period correct, but that's just me being picky 😊

I am a Costume Designer and we did a show called Chemical Imbalance a Jeckle and Hyde play. While onstage someone stepped on the back of one of the dresses and ripped out the back pannel. You can wear it anywhere and not care about what other people think, it's your clothes. You'd have to keep in mind that it'll be very hot and very hard to breathe. I suggest just going out for a stroll wearing this on a cloudy or cool day, or a costume party.
@chiaraparsley7454
@chiaraparsley7454 8 жыл бұрын
+Lexy Archer actually it doesn't get incredibly hot within the costume, and you would usually wear clothes that orientate through summer and winter which grants that materials would vary, and the most obvious point would be that if its say 30 degrees C everyone would be hot, but to sum it up you're not hot per say, warm would be a better word

Emma Wong although you shouldn't let other people's opinions stop you from wearing it, other things such as the fear of getting it dirty can make it hard to wear everyday as well. But if your too worried about what people will say and think then you can go to things such as renaissance fairs or conventions that have similarly dressed attendants.

Most of the time, I wear pioneer clothing (shawls, bonnets, skirts, aprons, gloves, stockings, etc..) and it doesn't really matter. If you aren't staring directly into people's faces, it shouldn't bother you. Though, I have been asked quite a few questions, such as whether I am in a play and what my culture is. It is actually rather fun.

What you call a chemise is actually a corset cover and should be worn between the corset and the top of the dress, to cover the sharp shapes of the corset. Chemise worn under the corset is longer, usually reaching somewhere above knees, to cover the open crotch. Pleaso don't spread misinformation.

@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118

+trinnychops The easiest order to put things on when you're dressing yourself (and have no-one else around) is to put drawers and camisole (or drawers and chemise, or what is called a "combination") on, then stockings and shoes, THEN corset and then corset cover and the rest. The stockings will stay up for a few minutes without the garters holding them up. I mean you can put on the corset before the stockings and shoes without any-one else around, but it is going to be much harder to do. The more you reduce your natural waistline with the corset the harder it is to do. Same with the longer the corset is.
